Really? And you know this... how? It's been less than 24 hours since it was released. Don't you think it's a bit rash to be throwing out statements like that? You don't know if this "problem" will appear on pristine phones in a few days or not. None of us do.

Grip up, people. The hysteria is getting really old.

Yes! Almost all the black iPhone 5 models at the apple store demo units have problems, and the phone was launched yesterday! check them out yourself and be the judge. I like the black but after seeing it in store, went with the white to avoid noticing small imperfections.hehe

iPhone 5 scratches easily.

Walk into an Apple store in 10 days and look how the demo models are holding up. The ones in the store take alot of abuse so we'll know how normal wear and tear will affect the phone.

That's a really good idea. According to the poll, you have a 46% chance of having a scratched up iPhone when you open the box.

Dear god, you'll need to coat the whole phone with Invisible Shield or some other case.

I predict that everyone's iPhone 5 will look like complete ass in a month. I remember the original iPod's with the silver back would look like this in a few days.

I predict 100% of your iPhone 5's will look like this by December 2012!
We'll all be talking about the best way to buff out the scratches (toothpaste, polish, wax, etc) GOOD TIMES!

Appointment today with the Apple store at 2:30 pm. What are the odds of getting a white model if I wanted to based on these images? These by the way are all around the front. None of these images are duplicates of the same area.

That is extremely shoddy workmanship, I'm surprised & disappointed.

All the best in getting your replacement, although I doubt you will have a problem after seeing those images.

It sounds to me like this is all from one huge batch of phones. Mostly, but not all from AT&T. Glad I can't use my upgrade until next month. I'm still getting black anyways.

I have an Oct 5th "delivery by" from Verizon and I'm seriously wondering if I should cancel and see how the wear is for everyone before I reorder. When it comes to my iPhone i have OCD and will not be happy if it looks like ass after a short amount of time. My 4S still looks brand new and all I use is a 98 cent bumper from hong kong..

Good reason they have to go back and start making apple products in the us. Oh! Wait! Apple is greedy and want to make billions with cheap labor. So it will never happen.

hahahahaha. It's funny you think US products are actually better made

Got a new one at the apple store today. Small nick in it too but better than the last. The apple guy looked through a bunch and said it was the best he could find. O well.

Have had both of these for around a day and a half.

My black came out of the box with one little mark in the lower left corner but i will use the black iPhone.

Never been fond of white iPhones and its only because i anticipated the black scruffing so easy that i bought a white one as well.

Will put up with the scratches that it picks up because i'm still not as much a fan of the white as i am the understated black.

I just got back from the Apple Store. They'll replace the iPhone 5 with a different one if it's scratched up bad enough (bad being subjective to the Genius Bar). They won't however, under any circumstances, give you a different color phone. They can't perform a swap out in the system unless it's the exact same model (color/capacity).

So if you have a scratched black iPhone 5, you can get a new (or new service stock) black one, but not a white one.

Or, you can try to return the phone and buy a white one, although if you bought it with a carrier subsidy, I'm not sure how the return/re-purchase would work, as you've used your 2 year upgrade.

Got my black iPhone yesterday and was thanking my lucky stars mine was fine! However today (and bare in mind I've been handling it like a jewel) I have discovered a silver mark on the bezel where the black has seemingly just come off!!!

I am super careful and haven't so much as touched anything with the phone!

Anyway I think a huge problem is brewing here, and with that in mind I have spoken to apple who are shipping me a white & silver replacement. I don't see the point in getting black replacements as it will only be a matter on time until it happens again. I wouldn't like to think what state it would be in if it were dropped on concrete.

I'm my opinion they need to rethink the finish on the black model. Can you imagine the state on these phones in 6 months time?? I'm so glad I'm switching to the white, I had a white 4S and loved it. This generation is not the time to go back to black :/

I see it as the exact opposite. Antenna-gate took my signal from 5 bars to 1 bar with the palm of my hand. Here we are talking about very very minor cosmetic blemishes that would likely have developed after a week or two of regular use anyways... Don't get me wrong, I'm not downplaying some of you issues...but it's not bigger than the fiasco two years ago that drastically affected every single iPhone shipped...

Yeah i agree. Most ppl dont care. Even know people that have been using a cracked screen for over a month. Prob a non issue.

. . . The apple guy looked through a bunch and said it was the best he could find . . .

All credit to the Apple store representative for checking several units for you, but that's a damning statement if I ever saw one.

I read elsewhere on the forum of someone having anodised aluminium torches that they carry around in a toolbox every day & still look really good. Here's hoping this is just an early batch issue and everyone gets sorted to their satisfaction.

Completely depends on the person. I have a friend that everything he owns looks like crap as soon as he touches it. I'm the opposite, I baby stuff best I can and won't be happy with out of the box blemishes.

Who'd you call? I'd like to try the same thing....

My iPhone was ordered online so I just called up apple. I have even had the confirmation email confirming the white model.

Plus because I can't be without a phone they are sending the white by courier and then collecting the black at another time that suites me. So I will have both the black and white for a couple of days.

My mind is at rest now, if I had asked for a black replacement I would never feel relaxed with it.

The main issue is that Apple claims in their promo page that

"iPhone 5 is made with a level of precision you'd expect from a finely crafted watch - not a smartphone."

Shouldn't we all be expecting a fine product rather than a scuffed phone, out of the box? This is a serious quality and marketing issue.

Scuff marked iPhone 5 deceptively promo as "finely crafted watch" precision?

I won't even accept the tiniest nick in a cheap watch! Apple must be glad that they are not in the Watch business!

My biggest obstacle is wondering if it is worth the hassle to play the exchange game if the phone is going to inevitably look like this in time. I plan on using the phone without a case anyway.

AT&T won't replace scratched phones

Curious to see AT&T's policy and was told that they would not replace scratched phones--I could return the phone but would have to pay full price (not the upgrade price) for a new one. Wouldn't be surprised if AT&T is trying to shift responsibility, but the rep. said that Apple was responsible for AT&T's inability to do any exchanges for this problem.

It IS an Apple problem after all. Not an AT&T problem.

To all of you people who are making excuses or say that a few blemishes, dents, scuffs straight out of the box is nothing to make a deal about......that people are overreacting etc:

I highly DOUBT you would feel the same if you bought a new car that had a visible small paint scratch or dent. Or if you bought a TV that had a dent out of the side, or hell, if you bought a bunch of eggs and 3 or so were broken in the carton. What about buying clothing that had a seam broken? Would you just accept that or would you return the item and insist on a perfect return product?

I just shake my head at the lack of standards that people will accept. If you consider that the phone costs upwards of 700.00 ish alone and you are paying the carriers 50-60.00 per month for that investment. Why would you not want the best that your money can buy?

I personally feel that if I am spending that much money on a product, it should be up to ME to damage the damn thing, not be at the mercy of a product that comes damaged by someone else's hands!

You likely pay more for you cell phone than you do for your car per year. Would you just go, "meh it's a dent, cars are made to drive, not look at" Or some such stupid statement.

It really boggles my mind about how people are willing/happy to accept or make excuses for crappy workmanship.

Try i would think majority of the people dont care. Majority of people here prob care. I wonder if they use different material 6 months from now

Can you post the wallpaper please ?

I haven't opened my iphone yet, I want black but I don't want it to look awful quickly. What do you think about using a Zagg invisible shield on the back and a bumper? Should that keep it ok? I never use screen protectors on the front so i assume it will be ok on the iphone 5 to leave it off?

Canceled my iphone 5 from Apple until later next month to see if this is a first batch or two that has flaws. Will buy at the Apple store later, and open it in front of sales, than if OK, I'll walk out :D ;) If not, I'll just wait it out. Not going to spend the big bucks on a flawed phone. NEVER
