To all of you people who are making excuses or say that a few blemishes, dents, scuffs straight out of the box is nothing to make a deal about......that people are overreacting etc:

I highly DOUBT you would feel the same if you bought a new car that had a visible small paint scratch or dent. Or if you bought a TV that had a dent out of the side, or hell, if you bought a bunch of eggs and 3 or so were broken in the carton. What about buying clothing that had a seam broken? Would you just accept that or would you return the item and insist on a perfect return product?

I just shake my head at the lack of standards that people will accept. If you consider that the phone costs upwards of 700.00 ish alone and you are paying the carriers 50-60.00 per month for that investment. Why would you not want the best that your money can buy?

I personally feel that if I am spending that much money on a product, it should be up to ME to damage the damn thing, not be at the mercy of a product that comes damaged by someone else's hands!

You likely pay more for you cell phone than you do for your car per year. Would you just go, "meh it's a dent, cars are made to drive, not look at" Or some such stupid statement.

It really boggles my mind about how people are willing/happy to accept or make excuses for crappy workmanship.

Can't agree more. And the worst is, in my case, Apple geniuses were saying that these cosmetic imperfections are not covered by warranty, only functional or technical defects are. And said this was not a quality issue. Well then, why the hack they spend some much money and time designing the exterior of the phone. I hope these claims were just from some bad apples in the company.

iPhone 5 won't be on sale in my country until next friday. I would've probably been to the store yesterdat and bought a black model, so I kind of thank this 1week delay.

That being said, I don't know what to do anymore. I just don't like the white iPhone because of its look when the screen is off. Too weird imo. The black model looks awesome but this scuffgate is driving me crazy. I'm still deciding wether I won't be able to live with it or if I won't give a f-ck.

Thing is, even if I got a perfect model with no marks at all I'd use it naked, as I hate an iPhone with a case. As someone stated earlier in this thread it's like putting a cover to your sofa. It's so f-cking nice that I wanna see it every time I use it. So... marks will eventually show up. Will I care? Well, IDK tbh. Maybe it even acquires a nice old/vintage/use look. Problem here would be resale value.

Same situation here :D
I just love the black phone! And that's why I probably go with black anyway... ;)

Appointment today with the Apple store at 2:30 pm. What are the odds of getting a white model if I wanted to based on these images? These by the way are all around the front. None of these images are duplicates of the same area.

HOnestly doubt it. I'm sure they'll let return it just because your within return period. But if people start bring phones looking like this after the return period I bet they'd laugh you away

Screw the Apple "Geniuses", Call Apple Care direct.

Only visible scuff is on the back play just below the camera lens. My case covers up the rest. Like it's not even there.

My 32 GB black (week 35) is flawless, but I expect some damage to creep in. I don't really like white iPhones for a number of reasons (some quite practical!) so I'm going to try sticking it out. It depends what the damage is, if it's extremely gradual and minute on the chamfer over it's life I could live with that. Let's see how these flawless phones age.

Canceled my iphone 5 from Apple until later next month to see if this is a first batch or two that has flaws. Will buy at the Apple store later, and open it in front of sales, than if OK, I'll walk out :D ;) If not, I'll just wait it out. Not going to spend the big bucks on a flawed phone. NEVER

I did the same. Just canceled my Vzw preorder. Keeping my order would be giving the richest, biggest company in the world a brake they do not need. I'm paying full price to keep unlimited so it better be in perfect condition.

I went into an AT&T store yesterday at 10:30am and checked out the black display model, which had been on display for maybe all of 2 hours. The black finish on the top right corner where the security device was attached was completely, i mean COMPLETELY worn off, as in pure shiny silver aluminum.

So just to make sure, Apple's 1 year warranty and Apple Care covers the scuff damage, correct? If so, I'll probably go naked + skin.

26 hours and 45 minutes after I received the phone, flaking off at the sharp edges and flat polished area near the power button.

Has lived its life thus far in a soft Oakley sunglasses pouch. The same pouch that has kept my sunglasses scuff and scratch free for 2 years.

Black 64GB AT&T, ship origin of China.

On hold with AppleCare now.

Ugh :(

I think even if they went w new material it will b a while since they would need to test extensively to make sure nothing interferes with the signal or heat.

You guys that are getting replacements thru AppleCare... do you have AppleCare + or what? I called trying to get a replacement for chips out of the box and they said I would have to take it back to the store. I called Verizon and they said they probably couldn't do anything.

Sure, I could have checked the phone out meticulously in store but I just didn't think anything like this would come from Apple.

Thanks Apple. Wish you would have wined and dined me before I got ****ED

Mine is sat in the box, I've initiated a return. Not willing to risk it. Will stick with my 4 for now.

Same for me! I am going to wait it out though a week to see if it gets better/worse, along with go to an apple store in a week to see the display models and if they are chipping.

After reading this thread, I'm a little less jealous of everyone with an iPhone 5.

Hopefully by the time my contract is up, this issue is fixed. The black is SO NICE looking, and it's a shame that the coating comes right off. Shouldn't Apple have tested this?
