So I've had my phone for over a day now and it's been in and out of my pocket all the time and no not a single scuff yet. I was worried for no reason.

Apparently it's from a specific batch so most people should be okay, it shouldn't scratch easily unless you are careless, accidentally drop it etc

supposed to be more resistant than stainless steel or the contrary ?

Aluminium is much weaker, but its also a hell of a lot lighter, hence why Apple use it in most of their products.

The grade used in the iPhones however is also a lot weaker than that used in MacBooks, iPads, etc.

i feel stupid today, i was really happy with my white iPhone 4S

and sold it with a huge price reduction to get the 5...

again i felt in the rush habit of early adopters

my 2 cons to get it were the weight and the battery life vs the 4S

i really hope that the white 5 will be more resistant if i return my black 5 for a white one

gosh, i really miss Steve Jobs, when he was alive, products were released only when quality was close to perfection

over the past year, we've seen a lot of failure with products and softwares...

I bought 4 iphone 5s and they were all scuffed or had dinges including the white ones.

The Apple store only returned one of the phones as they don't have any in stock to replace the others.

So, yet another interesting development. Over the past three pages of this thread Ca1i, RappleRapple & Uccle have all reported that upon closer inspection what they thought were scuffs/nicks with silver aluminium showing through, were actually tiny bits of glue which they were able to remove almost entirely.

Possibly won't solve everyone's problems, but may prove to be the case for a few on this thread.

will Apple end up acknowledging the issue and will they address it ???

i hope that in general, the white will be more resilient

Now I found a small nick on the band near the sleep button.....

It's driving me a little crazy, but at the same time it's so minor for now that it isn't worth risking getting one that is in worse shape or has another problem. But, another part of me is saying replace it now while they are not asking questions/ assuming I did the damage....

Just left the Apple Store in Phoenix, AZ and they gladly replaced my black 64GB (AT&T). They have no iPhone 5s left for new purchases, but they have a separate stock set aside for replacements. My replacement was in a small white box. The nice lady simply swapped my SIM card into the replacement, had me sign a few things, and I was out the door. Pretty simple process.

if this is LESS noticeable on the white, then that's fine for me because there will be cosmetic wear anyway in a few months

but Apple really has to address this

this is unacceptable

I'm curious to know whether those one or two people that "emailed Tim" got a response? And if they did, what was it?

I think it's in double figures now on how many news sites (not to mention forums/twitter hashtags (#scuffgate)) are reporting this... SURELY they have to say something soon?

I believe I read somewhere, might have been here, that "Apple are furious with Foxconn" - Wondering if there is any truth to this statement or not. At least it means they are very aware.

Ugh I am so tired of everyone saying SJ would never let this happen. He was alive during antenna gate. He told you to hold your phone a different way.

He probably will now just tell you to get a case or wear gloves.

maybe because you belong to those who just are tired to reading this kind of comment as a user like anyone could post

but he was actually my boss and since he died, i've noticed a lot of differences, not only for the products but also inside the company

For a phone that was touted as having such a high level of production (Tim Cook bragged about how parts were measured at the micron level), this really is a shock.

I'm actually amazed this didn't appear in product testing and QC checks..

Here you go

Got the black (week 36 manufacture) and its flawless. I took the sim tray out and tested it by scratching with the sim tray pin and, yes, if you press down hard it scratches.
I did think about getting the white after reading these threads but i had the white 4s and wanted a change. Plus, the black looks amazing:cool:. Im going to get a slip case for it and just be careful.

there is a huge difference between being careful not to drop it, not to make something hit it or fall on it

and having to extra protect it to avoid scratching it, especially considering the price

i don't give a damn saving some weight by having an expensive disposable smartphone

i am now crossing fingers for a class action to take place and a massive recall

they have to replace this stupid defective alu bezel by a stainless steel one !

Scratches, you probably scratched it yourself. Are your parents on with BMW getting a replacement black car because it shows more dirt or gets swirls in the paint? Apple released a great product and, yes, it's not scratch proof. Guess the 5S will have to be diamond coated, and cost about $10 grand to satisfy the complainers of the population.

You can repair swirls and light scratches, you can't repair the dings and scuffs on the iPhone.

You're joking right? Antenna-gate? Hairline cracks in polycarbonate. Every single mouse Apple as ever made in it's entire history aside from the original ADB and ADB II mouse.... total crap. I've been a huge fan of Apple gear for 20+ years but they have released their share of stuff that was not "perfect" both with and without Steve. This whole "Steve Jobs" would never let A or B or whatever happen thing is tiresome and ludicrous.

just noticed a defective anodisation on my black bezel

will return it for a white one

i guess that the silver bezel on the white does not suffer the same issue (is the silver bezel equivalent to the one on the 4/4S ?)

no the bezel on the iphone 4 and 4s was stainless steel the white will have the same problems just less visible.
edit (iPhone 5s Bezel is aluminium)

Apparently it's from a specific batch so most people should be okay

That was mentioned one other time in this thread. This is very interesting. I'd like to see some evidence though. Sounds more like a rumour at this point. Would be nice if we could compile serial numbers for "out of the box" scuffed phones and see if they correspond with some alleged "bad batch". Does anyone have any hard data / confirmation of this from Apple or some other insider source?

mine has a few blemishes out of the box most of which I dont really mind, but then i noticed one on the band that was actually a dent that I know I didnt make!:(
