The scuffs and dents arent happening through use, they are happening at some point during production.

Well, we don't know what they'll look like through use since most of us have been babying the thing since unboxing it. As of now, most of these scuff are indeed from the factory, but time will tell exactly how durable this aluminum is...

Think of your iPhone as the scratched suit of iron man ;)
It's scratched but it looks damn hot!

Ya, like the G4 Cube. Good memory.

Mine has fairly obvious discolouration at each of the four breaks in the band. Does anybody else have this? I'll be asking Apple to replace it.

I'm actually pretty sure that is adhesive that has seeped out and dried when it was put together. I bet it would rub right off with the correct remover.

everyone's black 5's are going to look like crap in no time flat. It was an extremely poor choice of materials on Apples part. Period. This and the small screen upset me as much as many of you here. I wanted the phone like all of you...Just going to stick it out with my 4S now, zero scuffing on it even if I tried hard to scuff it.

So I went to my local Apple store again today and talked with one of the guys there. Told him what happened. Out of the box small chip in paint and divet on the edge. He was like "man that suxs." "Bring it in and we will exchange it for sure." But they were out of the 64 GB for AT&T so he said to just keep checking back periodically. He did not act like it would be a problem to exchange. Hope it won't be as time goes on.

Also I really checked out the white model while there. I cannot convince myself to change to that color. Looks way to much like my white 4S and I just love the all black one soooo much more. Oh well.

If you didn't purchase from Apple ...

then Apple Care will say they can't do anything about it as it's only a cosmetic issue. Geez, now I know to only order through Apple.

Steve presided over cracked MacBook top cases, overheating laptops, weak powerbook hinges, iMacs with powersupply issues, Nvidia GPU failures in notebooks, Antennagate, cracked plastic shells of the 3G/3GS, MobileMe etc

Bottom line Steve jobs also had his own failures too. Stop acting like you know him personally as a messiah who oversaw flawless product launches. He isn't nor did he.

My story

Received iphone 32gb black Verizon from apple app store Friday around 2pm, noticed 2 scuffs in the band right away one on the left side where the front glass meets the edge and one on top. I called apple support and of course they wanted me to send my phone in and wait for a exchange...No thank you...I saw somewhere in these forums someone got one overnighted and then had to send his back, that person must of paid full price because they wouldn't allow that for me at all and used the fact i paid and upgrade price as the reason .

I then called my closest apple store in Omaha its about an hour away they said I could come in and exchange but only if the geniuses inspection warranted it, and if they had stock, he said they were almost sold out for the day. I made an appointment with the bar for today around noon. They took care of me with no problems, they had stock for exchanges and got one from a white box out of the back. Unfortunately the one from the white box also had a small dent on the left side but it was much much smaller then on the one I got originally, and this one had a small scratch on the back of the apple, but only noticeable in sunlight at a certain angel (I didnt notice it at the store)....I asked if we could check one more and he went to go ask he came back and said this wasnt a big enough flaw to do that I asked if he could throw in a Lighting to usb cord ($20)...he did it without hesitation.

Now all in all Im happy, I cant really see the nick on the left side unless I look for it and even then sometimes I gotta look really hard for it I kinda lose it. Wish apple could of just done this the right way and made them more durable but its a phone its gonna take hits...its apart of you basically..you stub your toe, bite your tongue/cheek, get a hang nail, and gets cuts along with much more stuff...your more fragile then your phone and your phone might as well be connected to you so yeah thats how I feel

Yeah, certianly is an issue. Got my IPhone 5 first thing from apple on Friday, got to work to open my prized gadget, little chips out of the edge. Went back to apple store on lunch, spoke to the guy who agreed it shouldn't be like that. No problem at all to change. Got another one out, asked if I wanted to check it there and then, did so.... And surprise another one straight out of the box with silver marks. He was a little shocked however proceeded to give me my third new IPhone 5 Black .... This time, pretty much perfect, however still a tiny mark. At that point I felt he'd done as much as he could and I've accepted it. Really tiny mark, but I think they all will have that somewhere. I love my apple toys and expect them to be pristine out of the box... Little dissapointing. Full cover will be going on before use.

Just got back from the Apple store about doing something with my scuffed 16 GB black AT&T model. I explained the situation to the technician and showed him the scuffing around all edges of the front bezel. He looked at it and asked me to wait as he went to the back. Once he returned he said that they would be unable to swap it for two reasons. First was because it wasn't a mechanical defect, and also because the store had no way to know if I had done the scuffing myself. He did mention I could of course just return it and get another one, but they would not have stock for a couple of days.

That was pretty much how the appointment went, but I wasn't satisfied with that answer so I looked around until I found one of the store managers who was on the floor. I told her that I was a long time customer and explained how pointless it would be for me to come and try to have them replace my phone that is less than 24 hours old. She reviewed the phone and agreed that it should be replaced. We got to talking and it was clear she didn't want to have me leave unhappy. I explained that while I would be content to leave with another black model it would be great to get a white model because it was only a matter of time until the black one shows more scuffs and in person the white one is stunning (mirror edge makes it amazing). Photos don't do the white one justice.

She made the exception and let me switch colors which is against their normal policy. She also waited until I was able to open the new white one and make sure it was pristine. I was pleasantly surprised that the white model was in near perfect condition. There was only one minute scuff on the bottom by the earphone jack, but again since it is on silver it barley is noticeable which is well within my OCD. Overall a great experience at the Apple Store.

I've pretty much determined that for those of you wanting to use the iPhone naked the white is the way to go for many reasons. Black one is great if you want to use a case or have a low level of OCD.

So, yet another interesting development. Over the past three pages of this thread Ca1i, RappleRapple & Uccle have all reported that upon closer inspection what they thought were scuffs/nicks with silver aluminium showing through, were actually tiny bits of glue which they were able to remove almost entirely.

Possibly won't solve everyone's problems, but may prove to be the case for a few on this thread.

Make that four now that I have seen - EngenZerO on the white iPhone thread also discovered that his scuffs/nicks were in fact glue and was able to remove them.

Also user 7even was able to remove all of his marks bar one.

Why do they need to replace it? How does it affect your usage? Scratches out of the box I can understand, but "discoloration"? Seriously?

That looks exactly like it was damaged and somebody touched it up.

Horse hockey.

They need to replace it because it is a defect, even if it doesn't affect the actual usage of the phone.

Would you accept a brand new Porsche that had patches of discoloured paint on the hood? It wouldn't prevent you from driving the car, but it certainly wouldn't be considered acceptable.

Apple's own Jony Ive says that the iPhone 5 has an "extraordinary" level of fit and finish. My particular phone doesn't meet the standard that they set.

Uh, looks pretty bad to me. A new phone for this price shouldn't look like that out of the box...

I have tried a couple different ways to remove it, but nothing makes any difference. It really does look like a flaw with the anodizing.

Some of them are glue bits that can be rubbed off...

Others are pits in the aluminum.
