. . . Of the two Apple direct phones, one is flawless (mine) and the other has a small chip and paint missing on the rear bezel edge (my wife's) . . .

I hope you get everything resolved.

Reading the full account, your experience is quite frankly ridiculous & completely unacceptable, but, having said all that, I had to laugh when I read the quote above . . .

Mine is black scuffed.
Production week: 35, 32gb and C3 factory...
Spoke to apple care yesterday and they asked for photo. They will send me replacement.

Someone said that some models made later were problematic due to the tools .

They said the tools that are being used to make the chamfered edges and back plate are probably wearing down , how much of this is true I don't know.

Apple is going to sell somewhere between 3 an 4 million phones this weekend. There are 2,300 posts in this thread. The vast majority of Apple customers will buy cases and no one will know the difference. In the end, just about all of their customers will be happy. The vocal minority here? Not so much.

The point you make, whilst still valid to an extent, is lessening by the day. As technology improves, the amount of information becoming more widely available to the general populace is increasing rapidly.

As an example, my mum, who doesn't really use the Internet bizarrely and has no great interest in technology still questioned me about whether my iPhone was having antenna problems back when all that commotion was going on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l4vpyQIafY This video is crazy. Its dated sept 6 so it is before the release. (i know its already posted but I couldnt find the original post)

I exchanged my first 5 yesterday at Apple and it took my a bit to talk them into which was slightly annoying. (nick in the side and crooked home button) I flat out had to say if you dont swap it I will just return it but I did this in the kindest way I knew how. I know its not there fault the phone came this way.

The worker went back and 5 min later came back and said this is the best he could find. Still had a small scratch but I said thats fine. I went home and got a good look. Had a nick on the side. Some paint peeling on the bottom and a very loose power button that rattled and felt like it was going to fall out of the phone if I turned it upside down. Totally bummed I returned the phone for a refund and went back to my 4. I really was very excited about this phone and had held my upgrade since last June(2011). Now Im not sure what to do but for $300 plus $100 for Applecare I really expected more.

Mine is from the same production week and factory as yours.
I purchased it from Apple Store UK and i will receive it tomorrow or on Tuesday, as i don't live in the UK.
Sadly to send it back -in case it's scratched- i would have to pay for shipping as we don't have an Apple Store here.
Can you please post the photos you sent to Apple Care?

My black phone is perfect. I've even accidentally hit it on a few things and still have no nics. I did call cs and got my account noted in case it starts to show early signs of wear so I can exchange it later.

I have a scrape that goes through the black to show the alum underneath.
I will take it back for a refund and wait until they have sorted the factory out.
There is definately an issue here and I think it comes from rushing demand for release.
I believe the youtube video in that October will be the time to buy one.

Not only is this a scuff, but it's rusted as well! (So says the poster. Seems that way by looking at it anyway)

Grim stuff.

Get back to me after a couple weeks of normal use.

Image

I sure will. I've got 30 days to exchange and my account is already been noted and I have a incident number

Nothing in that video is normal use. Of course metal will scratch with keys. Not sure what technology you expected them to invent to prevent that.

Very interesting. This makes me feel better about my decision to return and order a new one that won't ship till the end of October rather than fight for an exchange. I don't mind waiting.

Patience is a virtue and I believe there will be better quality batches from October. Waiting a couple weeks for a phone which will be used for at least a year seems reasonable to me.

http://micgadget.com/29723/the-under...xconn-factory/

"On the next following day, we were all being treated the same way by our supervisors and all of us were very pissed. Every time we picked up the iPhone 5 components, we put it back on the running belt real hard and scold “fxxk” just to release our stress."

Gives the the Foxconn workers time to cool down too. They must be pushed to their limits right now trying to satisfy the initial rush of demand.

I need to exchange a scuffed iPhone 5 I bought through apple.com.

What's my best approach? Going to apple store or calling apple support?
I have a genius appointment today but not sure if I'm wasting my time.

Thanks for any help!

You might as well attend the appointment. That way, if it fails, you can move on to the second option of calling them. You'd get a new device faster by seeing them in person anyway (IF they have it in stock) :)

Update on my scratched iPhone:

It's shipped already, should receive it within the next day or two. Pretty quick service.

It's a week 36, so hopefully it's better, than the week 35.

I know it's still early on but my black 32GB iPhone is doing well. My naked phone has been in and out of my pocket many times and I set it down on a wooden desk while at my computer. Nothing on the back or sides to note, at least for now.

While I really like the one I have, sometimes I second guess myself and wonder if I should get the white one. Is it just a matter of time or did I luck out? There's still 28 days for me to decide. I certainly don't want to give up the phone as it is now.

My phone info....

Production week: 36 (September)
Color: Black
Capacity: 32GB
Factory: F2

The site doesn't know where F2 is because next to the info it says "please tell us where this machine was manufactured".

I think Steve would have said NO to the ionised finish... Everyone knows it scratches easy...

Everyone?

Or just everyone who is not a scientist, engineer, or machinist... all of whom know that ANODIZED finishes are a way of making metal surfaces such as aluminum much harder and more wear resistant.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anodizing

Apple has been anodizing ipods for years. All those different colors on the ipod mini and the nano? Everyone didn't seem to have an issue with them.

Not only is this a scuff, but it's rusted as well! (So says the poster. Seems that way by looking at it anyway).

RED rust on an aluminum surface? Aluminum OXIDIZES and forms a white corrosion layer. Red rust forms on iron surfaces... not on aluminum.

That picture shows what happens when something red is rubbed against the phone.

possibly a crayon. :)

That being said, now I wish that I had ordered the white phone.

Aluminum doesn't rust. If the metal is bare it will oxidize which forms aluminum oxide. The oxidized layer won't chip off like rust and it is a dull gray color similar to aluminum.

Here are some sources:

http://http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061025141908AAhtPFu

http://http://www.theruststore.com/Does-Aluminum-Rust-W26C2.aspx

From the second link:

"Aluminum corrodes but it does not rust. Rust refers only to iron and steel corrosion.

Aluminum is actually very prone to corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. Aluminum oxide corrosion also looks a lot more like aluminum (dull gray to powdery white in color), so it isn't as easy to notice as rusted iron."

Thanks for telling me! I haven't read through the whole thread yet so I didn't know that. :)

That looks like a drop on the corner of a concrete curb. Could even be intentional like the glass break drop tests done every year when the new iPhones come out.
