Post a pic of your scuff/scratch, curious to see how bad it is. My first one was honestly not so bad, I could live with it.. but still glad I did it in the end. I bought the black/64 as well, and maybe that's why he had a few to open for me. I also asked him if people had been coming in like me, and he said not really. So I don't know if we're being too picky or just got unlucky.

Definitely don't give up, just because you know in the end you'll have some regrets for not "trying."

I called customer service on Friday and the lady offered me a free case, when they're available. I may just call when the Sena is added to the store and see if they can send me one. She also told me I'd have to return my phone and then buy another. Not the case after all..

Had to use manual focus to get the picture in focus!

There's nothing wrong with the sim card tray, just the angle the light hits it that makes it look paintless.

Of course they say not many people are coming in for replacements, do you really expect him to say 'yes, we're having many issues with these phones'? :p

Might need to ask about a case 'at a reduced price' though...

This makes so much sense and answers so many questions, this is why most people are receiving their preorders on October

I'll be holding off getting one now, will wait till next month for a better batch hopefully. Don't want to go through exchanges ordeal, disappointment etc

My black one is arriving 9th-15th so I should be good, the early adopters always get ****ed over.

Ouch, it's in the front. you have to get another one. And honestly the guy seemed pretty cool. My phone was not bad at all, it was in the back corner and only seen at a certain angle, but he replaced it anyway :D

I'm finally getting around to setting up my phone the way I want to, since I know I'll be keeping this one.

Best of luck on your search :(

What surprises me, in addition to all this drama is the lack of mainstream coverage for this issue. These photos need to be on the verge, Engadget etc.. Newspapers and everything. This is a real issue.

My iPhone 4S never had anything like this or close this happen to it, and its been nearly a year since, but my 5 got this right off the box.. And to make things even more frustrating, the iPhone replacements in-store... ALSO have these, some of you reporting 3, 4 or more boxes, all brand "new" and having this issue.

Everyone getting this issue and posting photos should submit these to the verge or similar.

it just pisses me off man, Like i just read a guy saying all the people that 1% that got a black iphone came here to complain. dude if it happened to you and you were registered to the forums I guarentee someone would post their input on the issue. It sucks paying top price for a device to receive it all dinged up.

I know :( It's not visible at all when looking at the phone from head on though. My original phone's nick was much worse: right underneath the home button, very obvious that there was a sliver of silver there.

I'm not giving up, something this expensive should be perfect out of the box. I just don't have much hope that the ones currently in store as replacement units are any better. Going to wait a few weeks, so I'm going to have to use this, a restore should get everything onto my new phone quickly though.

Its more about 70% if not more people experiencing this issue. The first batch seems as if its definitely been rushed. We can only hope apple issues a recall....which is very unapple like.

Yeah, better off to wait then. And see how the black holds up with regular use.

I'll be babying mine, at least for a while. Can't wait for proper sleeves to be released.

Pics...I took the unboxing photos in front of a clock in case someone challenged that it happened through my doing should things get worse and I decide to exchange. Though, I love the look of the black and probably won't exchange unless it just starts looking like complete garbage over the next week or so. The shot of the ding I also have with the clock, but this shot is clearer.

it's a good thing you won't have to go to court for this.:D
the lawyer of the other party can quickly say, you can change the time anytime you want, before taking the picture.:D

This is why i prefer to open the iPhone/ipad/macbook air in the store,
in front of a witness ( Apple employee) so there won't be a he said/she said scenario.

So if there's something that i'm not comfortable with, the exchange is just a few steps away.:D

My replacement is week 37, my original scratched was week 33.

We are currently in week 38 (for one more day).

This might have to do with it, and then again it might not.

Ive got a 64 gig black GSM that is sitting here unopened since friday night, not sure whether i should open it or not, it was made week 37, is there any benefit to me sitting here with it unopened, does that afford me any more options as far as return or exchange or should i check it out. Someone answer fast cuz its literally burning a whole on the couch next to my bed, i dont feel like photoshopping some fire effect so just trust me on that part.

if you bought it from Apple, open it. you're not gaining / losing anything by not opening it.

Possibly. Mine is a week 37 and it's perfect but not enough data to know yet.

The problem is not flat surfaces but the sharp edge just before the glass begins. Tat sharp edge was rounded in 4 and 4s and made of pure aluminium, this is a coating and sharp thus very prone to scuffs. Nomatter if you put a cover on or keep it naked, a minimum of 1 scratch is pretty much guaranteed the very first week you use it

You know what? I'm not agreeing with this. Changed my mind. My 2009 MacBook Pro has sharp aluminum edges, is anodized silver (what we call white) and the edges are just fine.

Anodization is NOT a paint job, but a chemical etching process. It's not very deep but replicates a natural oxidation process on aluminum. And it's done for looks and better wear resistance.

I think it was a bad batch in the chemical process. It does eventually wear off, BUT not this quickly or out of the box. It takes years. I have seen bad anodization in my own professional work and I think this is the problem, the more I think about it.

is that so, i was thinking by not opening it if i swapped it out for a white one they would give me another new one in box, and not just another phone where i keep my box, i know its not a huge deal at all, but i want the numbers to match and everything, not sure why i care but i do

We love Apple! Let us destroy them!!

Incorrect. If you're in the 14 day return period (actually 30 days according to Apple's support site) you simply return it for a refund and buy a fresh one, no questions asked.

Well mine was perfect out of the box or so I thought. Saw a white speck on the underside at the top, brushed it off and a chunk of the chamfer came away. Oh dear Apple. Back it goes. And I'll stick with the peerless build quality of my 4S.

I have a lovely chip in the bottom left corner of the back aluminum of my black/slate iPhone 5.

Unfortunately for me:

1. I traded in my refurbished/worn out iPhone 4 to RadioShack for $153 store credit
2. I bought it from RadioShack
3. RadioShack has pretty much told me to F off since they are out and have no way of reserving me a new phone, or really express any desire to help me either. Of course I expected 0 support, considering they need to not only sell phones but sell attachments to make any profit.

My power button also seems pretty wobbly, I'm not sure if this is suppose to be like this or what - but it's annoying. My original iPhone 4's power button broke after a 1 1/2, so that's what concerns me.

This is definitely the last time I early adopt anything...I thought I'd be fine getting it through RadioShack, but holy crap was I wrong. Now I have to wait for either corporate to call me/e-mail me back or until Apple has more in-stock to get a replacement for a fee.

No, you can choose to return it and get a brand new one [in retail box]. But then you'd have to wait for them to be in stock. I don't care about the box at all, I still have my iPhone 4 box, yet no iPhone 4. So in the end.. it's pretty useless.
