Wow, you guys are missing the painfully obvious reason:

New cases. More revenue. Period.

absolutely no other reason.

I'm a Photographer and can assure you that moving the Flash is a great idea, my guess is that when they were desperately trying to fix the light spillage issues with the White iPhone they concluded that this was one sure fire way to get better photos...

Does anyone else notice that the "ip5 rear camera" looks shockingly similar to the current CDMA iphone's front facing camera....

Look closely at the ip4s rear camera. The bulk of it is just housing. The lens in the middle is the actual sensor, and looks to be similar to the new part. Maybe this is further space saving/slimming on Apples part.

If this is true, wouldn't most people inadvertently cover the flash when taking snaps in landscape mode?

There would have to be new cases anyway for other hardware changes (such as the rumoured larger screen).

Still a tiny overpopulated sensor - but nothing that can be done about it, unless you want a thicker phone. So long as it's better than the utter drivel that is the iPhone 3GS camera I'll be happy.

Looks like this is the first actual claim about the fifth-generation iPhone that holds any weight.

Everything else is highly contradicted between various sources. The only other thing we can really count on is the inclusion of the A5 chip.

People don't realize that if they put the flash off center like that, it will increase side shadow tremendously...

People don't realize it because it's not true.

It will cause a change, but not a tremendous one.

Someone has to make a manual connecting all these rumors.

NO iPhone 5, iPhone 5 soon, iPhone 5 in September, iPhone 5 NOW, iPhone 5 2012, iPhone 5 will actually be iPhone 6, etc.

The alleged iPhone 5 front facing camera looks fixed focus (a per the front cameras). So I'm calling BS!

In dusty environments, it minimizes back-scatter increasing contrast and color saturation. Likewise, keeping the flash separated from the entrance pupil helps minimize red-eye.

It will increase cost since it will make a single module 2 modules and a single large hole 2 smaller holes. Might be why others don't do this and instead simply add MP. Adding MP is literally free and on these small sensors degrades IQ substantially; easily influenced spec miesters, however, don't really care.

It could be a cost thing but then what accounts for SE and Nokia offering some models xenon flash and flash that has been pushed a bit farther than a typical phone has? jw and wondering why happen hasn't give us xenon flash yet as it suppose to be better.

Well Duh....

The Apple iPhone flash unit is an external handheld 3" x 4" accessory device which runs on a special Apple battery.

It is only $199...
The cable which runs from the iPhone main connector to the flash is only $99.
The battery (when it fails) is also $99
The charge for Apple to replace the battery is yet again $99 (you can't do it because Apple is marketing this device as "magical" which means they don't want you to know it runs on a battery ;) )

I know...I know....$300 just for a flash unit. But here is what trumps all the downside stuff:

both the unit and the cord are WHITE...and hold your breath...SO IS THE BATTERY!!!!

I don't think Apple is THAT concerned about the quality of the flash on the phone that they would go through the expense of a redesign. I'm sure Jobs knows enough about photography to know that it would be a silly move on its own.

You will never get flattering flash photos from a pinpoint sized light source no matter where they put it on the phone. You never see teeny-tiny light sources used in photography unless they're used for an effect or as a necessity to keep the size of the hardware down.

My guess is that something is being added or shuffled around inside the phone and moving the flash was necessary, if this is even true.

BUT, I could be wrong. Maybe the future big feature in smart phones will be beautiful flash photography complete with, hmmm ..... second-curtain sync and choice of assorted diffusers and reflectors.

The iPhone 5 camera part looks like the camera on the leaked next gen iPod nano. That same octagon look to it.

Couldn't it end up looking like this, assuming it's LED (slight exaggeration):

Steve jobs on the new flash - on stage - black turtleneck..

"so our friends in the industry have been placing the flash close to the lens creating washed out photos. Well we said we can do this better. Well we've been working out butts off on this new flash - looks great - no red eye - no washed out look - we call it - iflash - isn't that great guys?"

And before u say it my friends

Yes it has seams!

Humor...less. Sorry, but from a comedic standpoint, this is what most would call a fail.

From all this, I can understand one thing.

iPhone 5 is coming soon. :D

September. Fingers crossed. :D

June would be soon. September is a long haul! Unfortunately for me it is looking like September...my iPhone 3Gs is falling apart.

At least this shows Apple may be serious about the camera thing. It's obvious they want the iPhone to be the brush and the iPad to be the canvas, Something I've been looking forward to since the iPad came out. Photographers are going to buy these things up. Of course the iPhone isn't going to be a top of the line camera(unless apple has something up their sleeve), but for photographers, with the iPhone in their pockets all the time, they will never miss an opportunity to catch a great shot.

But your hand already covers up the signal when you are holding it in any orientation...

I would have laughed at that maybe six months ago, but those jokes are getting so old. Also, someone beat you to it with a better iPhone 4 antenna joke :p

People don't realize it because it's not true.

My guess is that it will have a curved reflector behind the Flash, Apple's Micro Technology could allow the Flash to utilize all or part of that mirror when firing, thus allowing it to compensate for the Camera to Subject distance...Apple has put enormous $$$ resources behind it's Camera Technology, this is a perfect example of that...

The iPhone 4s will use infrared flashing technology perhaps? That'd be pretty cool to see.
