If they use the same sensor size as the current iPhone and just backlit it, then that is a total waste of time me and every red blooded Apple fan. If Apple wants to really take away sales from the baloney competitors they really need to move to the better and larger sensor Nokia is using in their N8(1/1.83"), or N85(+ Sony Saito a few year old phone) 1/2.5", which is larger than the 1/3.2 used in the Sony Arc and iPhone. Apple come on you can do it, think about photos that could match a $150 Canon camera in all aspects if you went with something better than that baloney Sony is selling you. Apple-heads we need to right now fight the Mac to better the Mac for our own sake, because now one else will ever do it for us; therefore, we must fight!

In still shots where he complains about shadow detail, why didn't he use HDR mode?

There are plenty of 3rd party apps out there that more than take care of any "white balance issues". Camera+ has a neat feature that lets you focus on one area but adjust exposure for another area of the frame.
Because, he is on the Sony's dole, and has to make the comparison look "fair" to appease certain people.

No Antenna Design Change?!

Can someone please explain to me how people are expecting no design change? Apple HAS to change the design, at the very least the outside, because of the antenna problem. There is no way Apple would go through that again, it was probably some of their worst press exposure in the last decade.

They will have to either change the silver material to something else or add some kind of extra cover along the edges, won't they?

Yet Apple sold a record # of iPhone 4 despite that. Everyone simply put on the bumper case and moved on.

In dusty environments, it minimizes back-scatter increasing contrast and color saturation. Likewise, keeping the flash separated from the entrance pupil helps minimize red-eye.

It will increase cost since it will make a single module 2 modules and a single large hole 2 smaller holes. Might be why others don't do this and instead simply add MP. Adding MP is literally free and on these small sensors degrades IQ substantially; easily influenced spec miesters, however, don't really care.

The mold cost will be the same in cost, with a few new CNC hole cuts. The two modules will be advances in technology and acceptable increases of a few cents in production, per phone.

not knocking the iPhone, but if you are serious about professional photography you'll buy the proper equipment for that sort of thing anyway. For just basic/general photos it's not a big deal how well the flash works or doesn't work in my opinion. It's not like people film blockbuster films from their iPhone or anything, there is professional equipment for that.

I bet iPhone 2011 will have A5, 64GB and basically same design. And that is enough.

ok,
1. it's not going to be called the iphone 5, it's going to be called the iphone 4S.
2. if the flash is on the other side of the iphone, then some apps (like Heart Fitness) won't work anymore.

:apple: :apple: :apple:

The thing is: the "best" place (from a camera's perspective) for the flash is as far from the lens as possible.

I would say it depends on the situation. There are objects that require a distance between lens and flash, and there are others where the flash should be near to the lens. Therefore exist esp. circle flashes positioned around the lens. The balance of such situations is 50:50. Very tiny lenses like that on the iPhone may require special treatment.

"Best" thing is when you can place freely the flash depending on situation.

I often make quick photos with my iPhone 4 and always have to check out first where the lens is (orientation) for not covering it with a finger. When there are TWO spots that I don't have to cover (as it looks at the mock-ups) it seems to be even more difficult.

Maybe if you've a 3GS or older, but they really need something more than the above if they want to drive sales and give iPhone 4 owners an incentive to upgrade.

I don't believe what I'm reading on this thread to be honest, I thought people would be more sensible.

The only 'S' phone we've had was the 3GS, and it was identical in terms of casing and looks, the only differences were inside. It had the same case, same screen, same location of cameras etc.

So, all the people on here saying "It'll have a bigger screen, faster processor, more RAM, camera in a different place, different camera, it'll make your toast, and whisper sweet nothings in your ear as you go to sleep but it will be called the iPhone 4S"... IF the design of the phone changes, which it seems likely, (bigger screen etc), then it won't be an 'S'.

At the end of the day, who knows? Two weeks till WWDC

Slighty off-topic but check out 'Trimensional'

Did you know that you have already a built-in flash (fourth generation devices) that can be placed on multiple positions? (Okay, kind of…)

http://appshopper.com/link/trimensional

It uses the screen as a serial multi-spot flash and produces real 3D scans! Requires iDevice with front facing camera and iOS 4.1.x. Supports iPad 2 but I cant await until it becomes Universal-App (hopefully). There is an "In-App-Purchase" for 3D Model Export (and do some fancy 3D printing).

I tried it and it works flawless. Just follow the instructions (dark room, small objects). Very interesting technology. Resolution could be higher but better that nothing.

Am i the only one seing that it could simply be a 3D camera ?
i mean if they move the flash, then maybe, it's because they added a second lens.

it could be a first move into 3D. but that imply a 3D screen .... anyone ? :)

+1

I can't follow the obsession with MP's lenses, flash, red eye , shadows or not etc. I do not buy an iphone to take pictures or video of high quality.
The camera is just a very welcome and practical feature to have.

Also why do we care about what it is called? It will be a good phone.

Without knowing chances are many here will be disappointed with the next feature set.

Since it takes a while before new technologies are implemented and become available en masse (i.e. affordable) most likely all we will see is an in between step:

ios 5, A5 combo chip and hopefully 64GB. If there is anything else it will be gravy.

And yes, they will fix the antenna.

Apple will IMO not be in a race with other phones and do what they have always done, incremental upgrades.

I heard on the grapevine, that Apple HAVE moved the flash... over to Android, where we can actually use it to watch videos etc, if we want to! :p

You're wrong. It will add it very slightly, as it should. This will reduce the washed-out deer in the headlights effect associated with a face-on flash.
Have you ever seen a professional photo shoot? Photographers don't shoot with a flash on top of their camera. Flash unit is on a tripod, off to the side.
What the hell do you do when you shoot a picture in sunlight? Have the subject face perfectly straight at the sun.
Get a clue.

Actually, I don't pose my subjects facing directly into the sun, because they end up squinting.

I also shoot with a flash on top of my camera, but i find that using that directly causes too much of a drop shadow no matter what the orientation, so if indoors I prefer to bounce the light off the ceiling. If using a strobe on a stand (what you would call "flash on a tripod") I still use an on-body flash as a fill light.

In fact, for macro (close-up) shots, the best option is to have the flash closer to the lens, like this:

0603_pentax-macro-flash.jpg

But then again, none of this is relevant since you won't be using the iPhone for a professional photo shoot. We are talking moving the light source over by less than 1.5 inches, not across the room. No one will notice a thing. It's still pretty direct. From a professional photographer's standpoint, I don't see the point of moving the flash this much, nor do I see the harm.

Before you tell someone to "get a clue" first ask yourself if you know what you are talking about.
