For those who think this is an iPod Touch's case, please look at the facts first:

1) There is a mic and speaker gap. Thus, iPhone

2) There is a headphone jack on the top. Thus, iPhone

3) There is a silent/loud switch. Thus, iPhone

4) There is a noise cancellation hole. Thus, iPhone

5) The iPhone is one of Apple's major flagship products, not the iPod Touch. They would want more people upgrading their iPod Touches to iPhones, rather than vice versa.

1) or dual speakers

2) or Apple moved the one thick component to the thick end of the device

3) or a rotation lock switch

4) or a microphone for skyping or facetiming

5) or Apple is tired of watching Touch sales dwindle and want to renew interest for people who don't want to spend $1000/year in phone contracts or who don't want to give their teens/pre-teens a $600 phone.

I'm not saying it is a Touch but the arguments against it being a Touch simply don't hold water.
And if Apple's past actions were set in stone then we'd all already be holding our iPhone 5s wouldn't we?

The taper is from to back not side to side.
It won't be lopsided.
Have you ever held a camera?
Almost every camera is held in landscape and hundreds of them have a slight bulge at one side or the other. It actually increases holdability.

I completely understand where the taper is... I've got eyes and can see where the case tapers.

And yes, I've held a camera. My camera is not tapered... it's completely rectangular no matter where you hold it. And strangely enough, I've never dropped it.

I simply do not like the design that the case seems to suggest. I believe it looks awkward and weird. Thankfully, there's a good chance this is not actually the design.

Gee, it is thinner than iPod touch and nobody thinks this is the successor to the current iPod Touch????

It's not an iPhone folks. It is the next iPod Touch (aka iPad Nano). That is my best guess since both iPhone and iPod Touch are due for an update.

EDIT: At least one other person is thinking along these lines:

Am I the only one thinking the new "4S" model will really be the iPhone 5, this case leaked model will be an iPad Mini and that's it? No more iPod Touch.

I think this because of iPod going away in iOS 5 for the "Music" icon, it seems apple would be dropping the iPod touch name and replace it with the iPad Mini. Touch is now a given, not necessary to have in the name.

Line-up:
-----------
1) I phone 5 that looks identical to the 4 but with A5 chip and GSM/CDMA support in one device. Available on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint

2) iPad Mini with larger screen than the discontinued iPod Touch with A5 processor

3) iPad 3 (coming early next year with A6 processor?)

4) Current low end black iPhone 4 model will be sold as-is for $99 on contract at AT&T and Verizon only

Any thoughts?

This is what I've been saying since WWDC. It is the one theory that explains:

1) Multiple iPhone model rumor
2) Fall iPad release rumors
3) The absence of iPod Touch update rumors
4) The "new product introduction" hinted at during the last quarterly financial report call.

Everything seems to be pointing to this new design being the "iPad Nano" which will be the successor to the iPod Touch.

EDIT: Wow, I get "negatives" for stating a theory that bursts the bubble of folk's hopes and desires for the iPhone 5 introduction. I'd love the current speculation about two iPhone models and a complete redesign to be true, but it just does not seem like Apple's M.O. -- sorry for ruining folk's day.

Certainly sounds plausible. Disappointing if it is true though, for all those waiting on the iPhone 5.

An iPad Nano? A device with only a 4-inch screen could never be considered tablet status. Heck, look at the Samsung Galaxy Note. (5.3" phone)

What's more logical, is this: the "iPad 3" rumors were actually just bigger iPhones, iPod Touches, being sold along with the "4S" That way girls and their small pockets are satisfied, and so are all the big-screened people. (if you can even call 4" a big screen...)

I believe carrying around a larger phone is is actually more of an issue for guys than it is for girls. Since girls usually carry their stuff in a purse.

I am really surprised at the number of people who would hate a 4" screen. My Galaxy S has one and it is by no means bulky, or hard to fit in a pocket, or hard to hold. And, I have average to just under average sized hands. In fact, I am not sure I could go smaller after getting used to this. I would even consider 4.3" or 4.5".

I am curious how many people who bemoan the potential increase in screen size have used a 4" screen phone. Not to say they are wrong; it is all personal preference, but you certainly can't describe them as unwieldy.

Agreed. I think everyone complaining about "huge" 4-inch screens are overreacting, or they really don't know what they're talking about. I've owned many different phones with different screen sizes; 3.5, 3.7, 4.0, 4.3, 4.5... And the difference in phone size is laughable small. But the difference in my experience was great. Bigger screens are amazing. And if one more person tells me to "get an iPad" I swear I'm gonna shoot myself. (not really :p) A tablet and a phone are completely different things. I sold my iPad 2 because it was too annoying to carry around. A phone big phone will ALWAYS be right with me, in my pocket.

I'm hoping they go back to the sexy curvy look of the 3gs and abandon the rectangular boxy new look of the iphone 4. Its easier to comfortably hold a curved backing. A lot of the rumors seem to suggest this, so here's hoping.:)

It has nothing to do about surveying the preferences of the general public.

You only need to ask the opinion of one person: Steve Jobs.

If Steve doesn't like the larger screen, the iPhone won't get it.

As far as we can tell, Steve Jobs' aesthetic favors small, simple, elegant, and thin.

Let's face it, Steve isn't going to supersize the iPhone. If he wanted to, he would have. Apple has had many other opportunities to increase the iPhone screen size, yet they have never done so. The simplest explanation: Steve doesn't want it. End of discussion.

I could believe it may be the new iPod Touch but Gruber hinted that there will be no new iPod Touch this year.

Good i think the iTouch is a dumb idea. But apple seems to think everyone looks at their iPods all the time and you know, not keeping it in your pocket for a long bus ride. I don't like having to look at the screen to press pause. sorry.

Not the only case

Now in Shenzhen you can finding many iPhone 5 cases. This one looking like one I see last week but I also see other case more different cases like iPhone 4. I asking the seller if she sure this being new iPhone, she saying she not sure and customer must take risk.

This becomes a non-issue if you have a headset with a remote. With these you can control all the basic playback functions without having to look at the screen or even reach into your pocket. You can also use the button on any old 3.5mm stereo phone headset to pause and resume. And then they make remotes that fit between the iDevice and a regular set of headphones.

I think it's looking more and more likely that Apple wants the iPhone to be a smaller version of the iPad. The shape and design looks very familiar.

I for one hope they don't go back to the curve (and I don't think they will). Why... well when you lay the 3G or 3GS on a flat surface, like say a desk, and then you go to press the home button, the phone tips up like a flippin' rocking horse! Very annoying.

I've never found the iPhone 4 uncomfortable to hold either.

To see where their current design direction is going, look at the iPad2, they got rid of the curve on that too. So if they do change the back, my guess would be they would round off the edges but keep the centre flat.

We will see the sure thing once they are ready for release. I think I'll hold onto my 4 a little longer though. This would be a first time that I didn't upgrade every time there is a new release of an iPhone. This has been my favorite form factor thus far though so we will see.

How long have you been on Apple forums?

People only hate the 4" screen and love the 3.5" screen because Apple don't use a 4" screen and others do.

If Apple used a 4" screen and say Samsung used a 3.5" screen them The Samsung would be rubbish as the screen was too small.

I've been around long enough to see this happen again and again on these forums. Remember how hated and rubbished as a cheap fake the current iPhone 4 was before it was known to be the real thing from Apple.
If you hunt back far enough you will find pages of people on these forums slagging the early photo's of the iPhone4 off.
But that's conveniently forgotten about now.
The same will happen with whatever Apple brings out next.

Funny really :)

If you don't believe me, just wait a few months and read these forums and look for all the posters slagging the (then current) 4" iPhone off still saying how bad it is and they won't be buying it.

I don't care who likes what, and of course we all have things we like and don't like, and have our own preferences. It's the way people change their minds in an instant that makes me laugh :)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

If this is the touch, that is going to be a serious disappointment unless they do change the phone to be smaller with a slightly larger screen.

I just need a redesign. Please give us something new.

Not posted here for a long, long while, but have been reading the threads in readiness for the iPhone 5.
I currently own a 3GS 32GB and did not want to take the plunge and get a 4 and was happy to wait for the next device as i have had no issues with the phone and also locked in to contract. With my contract now well overdue i'm chomping at the bit for the release of the new one (whatever they decide to call it).
After reading all of the threads regarding case design, parts, and even losing another prototype (which is the wildest speculation to date IMO), it seems to me that a lot of people do take this all quite seriously. We have to remember that this is a rumours site and that nothing that has been given out has much fact behind it.
Parts for instance only give us a picture, but no confirmation of what the part is for and which device it will be in....we are only left to speculate.
Case designs albeit in production and available to buy do not give confirmation as to what idevice they are for. This is China we are talking about, and they could be jumping on a band wagon to con people in to buying cases and to hype more rumours. I am sure that even with manufaturing costs they can still sell cases to people even when the device is not out to fit it. Lets face it....how much fake and counterit products come out of the country every single day!!
The lost in bar story again....Really!? I do not think that there has been a prototype lost in a bar again, it just wouldnt happen. If it did and was picked up by someone then we would have seen photos on here by now.
Im not disrespecting anyone here who participates in the rumours or comments...in fact i find it all part of the fun and anticipation :)

Based on facts on past iPhone releases heres my thoughts and speculation on what we might just find:

3G to 3GS - Internal upgrades / iOS 3 / same form factor
3GS to 4 - Internal upgrades (A4 processor) / iOS 4 / different form factor
4 to 5 - Internal upgrades (A5 processor) / iOS 5 / Same for factor???
5 to 6 - Internal upgrades (A6 processor) / iOS 6 / different form factor???

With regards to the screen size, i would not say no to a slightly bigger screen (just not huge), but im happy with what we have now. If i wasnt then i would get an iPad.

With the normal routine of a new iPhone coming making the previous version the 'cheap affordable' one. Just like the 4 coming out and the 3GS going to an 8GB version which is more affordable.
I feel that the 5 will just make the 4 go to an 8GB option that is more affordable. This could be why we have seen rumours of a 4S with cheaper parts floating around. I think they will add cheaper parts to the 4 and keep the name the name, not with an S, and that the internals ie. processor, RAM, camera will stay exactly the same. I cant see them releasing an A6 processor to the 5, but waiting for the iPad 3 to put that it in. It makes more business sense to do it that way as why would you produce a more powerful phone before the tablet. The iPad will need to have the next gen processor and hardware upgrades first, as the iPad is the more expensive product.

I know its a lengthy post and im not here to shoot down peoples comments, posts or any other rumour. This is just my opinion and i thought i would share it with you all, as most other people have done too :)

Remember.....Pinch of salt :p

Cant wait to see what Apple have in store for us!!!
