This still seems (to me) to be more of a new, larger, gaming oriented iPod touch device than an iPhone. Maybe Apple is finally going to make more of a differentiation in the iPhone and iPod touch line? With the larger screen (if this is in the iPod touch family), it would possibly make more iPhone owners want to also own a touch for gaming (meaning Apple sells two devices to a customer instead of one). As it stands now, most who own an iPhone have no reason to purchase an iPod touch. And if this is in fact a larger Touch, and not an iPhone, it would make even more of a dent in the handheld gaming market. And I could see Apple doing that, with the likes of the Sony Vita to be released soon.

I'm sorry, if Apple pulls that I'll be getting a Galaxy S 2. In other words, no, Apple won't do that. That's absolute moronic.

No it's not.

Agree. I only mentioned this way because there are rumors of 2 iphones to be introduced. ("Iphone4s or Iphone-whatever" with old design - "iphone5 or Iphone-whatever" with new design).

There are 2 "new" phones coming. Just like we got 2 "new" phones every year. In 2009, there was no 8 GB 3GS. In 2010, Apple "introduced" the 8 GB 3GS.

So we're getting a "8 GB" iPhone 4 and a new iPhone 5. Making only one world model does not really change the device.

People thinking of getting a cheap iPhone 4 with an A5 SoC are delusional. Apple will keep their single core model around for the cheap model, just like other vendors are doing (Samsung, Sony, Motorola are all still introducing single core models).

Regular pants my friend. It's just impractical if your whole pocket is filled to the rim with a phone. The current iPhone 4 fits nicely, and I found it a nice 'feature' of the iPhone to be small and compact, and it really shouldn't be any thinner.

I wear jeans, "tight" fitting. The iPhone 3GS is loose in the pockets and the 4"+ Android models aren't necessarily bigger, they just have a larger screen (you know the case size and screen size are unrelated right ?).

One thing i'm wondering, wouldn't this cause fragmentation?

We have been over this a lot; short answer: no.

If apple does use a large screen they will keep the same aspect ratio and the same resolution,

yes, this will decrease the dpi. I think I recall someone figuring out what the dpi would be of 960X640 on 4inch screen, and I think it was still around 300,

but either way the iphone 4's dpi is sooo high that it is beyond the point where our human eye can no longer distinguish individual pixels. so even if the dpi gets lowered to around 300ish, it is still high enough that our eyes will not be able to distinguish individual pixels. which means to a human, you will not be able to realize that the dpi dropped at all, however all the images will be magically bigger.

side thought: at one point there were several rumors about an iPad 2+ or an iPad 2 Pro, or maybe an iPad 3..... with a higher res display and better cameras, to be released this October with the iphone 5

do we still believe these rumors?? the rumors about that have died down, but maybe its just because all the attention has gone to the iphone.

even if you're wearing regular pants with regular pockets even a 4.5" phone like the samsung infuse, it shouldn't fill your pocket to the rim. seriously bro, I don't think you're wearing regular pants. that's not how regular pants are.

IF an iPad get's a retina display it will be iPad 3.

Apple wouldn't waste that great of a selling point on a stopgap between 2 and 3.

what if the retina display ipad is launched along side the ipad 2 at a higher price like $800-1000

then ipad 3 is launched in june with the A6?

the iPad will not be tiered, that's one of the reasons people buy apple products, everything is simple.

you get an iPad 2, choose your wifi or 3g connection, and your NAND size.

that's it.

btw, i don't think well see an iPad in June. i think September will become an iOS launch month, where ALL iOs devices are launched together.

Not true actually...

Unfortunately, that's just not true. Do the math and you'll see that 960x640 on a 4" screen is 288 PPI, which falls below the 300 PPI threshold at which the normal human eye can detect pixels (at a 1 foot distance).

If Apple makes a 4" screen they will, in fact, need to increase the pixel resolution, which introduces the question of screen resolution fragmentation.

Just accept it. There won't be an Iphone5. An upgraded Iphone4s... sure.

Why?

Lots of reasons:

Is there any evidence of it's existence? No, there isn't.

Are there any parts found of the new design? No, there isn't. Only parts of the Iphone4 lookalike.

The icon on Photo stream? Could be, but not convincing enough.

The cases made by third-party case manufacturers is no evidence, pure speculation.

Look at the design of the iMac. The design is already 4 years old. The design of the Iphone4 is just over 1 year old. Apple doesn't change the design every year.
...

So... In a few weeks there's going to be a new version of the Iphone4. And that's it. I guess a lot folks are going to be disappointed.

Truly, I hope I'm wrong. Maybe next year??

You seem to be pretty confident in your decisive conclusion that there will not be an iPhone 5 yet none of the reasons you offered are conclusive at all:

Is there any evidence of it's existence? No, there isn't.
This can be said of any product that was ever released- there isn't evidence it exists until there is evidence that it exists. Lack of evidence now does not mean that the iPhone 5 doesn't exist. Heck, there is also no evidence that the next gen will be the 4s, is there?

Look at the design of the iMac. The design is already 4 years old. The design of the Iphone4 is just over 1 year old. Apple doesn't change the design every year.
Brilliant logic here again dude.

288 ppi is not below the threshold where you can no longer detect pixels, 288 ppi at a 1 foot distance is still retina

hmmm

Ok, let's say that the dimensions from the phone covers are for the new iPhone 5. How come everyone in their mother keeps putting on that fatter home button>?

do you think the ipad 3 will be launched this sept? or next?

Here's the thing, Apple knows big devices are selling well and being chosen over the iPhone. So offer a new iPhone 5/HD and continue to offer iPhone 4, possibly upgraded with A5. If iPhone 5 sells well, you can toy with keeping both form factors. Their volume is in the tens of millions, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

.

I know quite a few people that will be quite irritated if Apple made us wait this long and keep the same form factor as the iPhone 4. They didn't get to be the most valuable company in the world by making stupid moves. Logic tells us the design is going to change - but we need to wait and see our new prophet holding it in his hand.

Given that Apple has more money than the US government, and is currently king of the hill in the electronics industry, they couldn't afford to do any less. Crappy Chinese sweatshops probably read the specs wrong

Apple could stick to 960x640 for a 4" and above screen with no problem. They just lose the retina effect at 12" distance (just hold the phone at a 14" distance!). Phone manufacturers are now moving to qHD screens, which are 960x540 and putting that on 4.3" and 4.5" screens.
Sure, it's a possibility. IMHO for a 3.9" or higher resolution (3.8" is still slightly above 300ppi and might be okay) Apple has to either give up on the retina branding as it is now or they have to introduce a new resolution. Personally I would prefer a higher resolution and a significantly bigger screen for at least one new iPhone SKU (as mentioned above, 4.4" and 1200x800 would be nice). Especially since Android is likely to introduce a higher res phone near the end of the year (or Android already did if you count the 1280x800 Samsung Galaxy Note as a phone).

i don't know about the iPad 3.

they could gamble and wait until next year, but they'd rather canabilize iPad 2 sales, than have their customers switch sides.

so i'd say this year, but i wouldn't be suprised at all if there was no iPad 3 in sept.

I hope this won't be true... I like the design, that's not the problem. But like this, it'll be like the Samsung Galaxy phones. The phones get much bigger, and then they don't fit in your pocket anymore. Yes they are thinner, but wider and larger.

I dont know about that. I had the Samsing Infuse for a month and it had the 4.5 inch screen and it fit fine in my pocket.

----------

Anything wider than the iPhone4 sucks to hold onto. Wider phones get hard to fit in pockets. Need a bigger screen than the iphone4? .... Buy an iPad.

Really? Are you wearing junior size clothes?

The whole "retina" branding was dumb to begin with anyhow. It confused so many people who don't understand the concept.

In case you aren't aware, the world changes and people's hype in electronics changes with what they demand the most. I'm sure apple is aware that things change, and you can't base what a company like this will do based on what they've always done. They know how to change things believe me

why is 300 the magic number??? because apple said so last year?

its hard to believe that our human eye's seeing ability lands at a perfect number of 300,

anything about like 275, our human eyes probably can;t detect pixels from about 12" distance

REALLY! Wow, sign me up for an iPhone sized Phone with a 36" screen! Woot.

I stand corrected

288 ppi is not below the threshold where you can no longer detect pixels, 288 ppi at a 1 foot distance is still retina

According to http://www.kybervision.com/Blog/files/AppleRetinaDisplay.html, it seems as if the often-quoted 300 PPI threshold is really inaccurate, since it's actually the angular resolution we should be caring about, not the sheer pixel density. A human eye with 20/20 vision cannot distinguish pixels smaller than 1 arc minute (which is 1/60th of a degree). At a distance of 12", this translates to a PPI requirement of 286.5 PPI.

And magically, a 4" screen with 960x640 resolution is precisely 288 PPI, just above that threshold. I stand corrected, sir, you were right!
