I just don't get why so many people are craving to get a huge 4,5" screen and bigger resolution. It almost seems the circus that has been going on forever around megapixels in the field of photography is now arriving to phones. If Apple makes the screen bigger I'm pretty sure they will keep the same 960×640 resolution and just make pixels little bigger. I own a second generation iPod Touch and I'm looking forwards to buy the next iPhone since I finally have the money (and a good reason) to buy one. So for me moving from iPod Touch 640x480 resolution close to the current iPhone 4 resolution will be a huge improvement anyway so I can't really complain. It feels weird that people think they are going to see difference on the screen if Apple makes pixels larger and not to add more pixels in order to keep the "Retina illusion". Apple could easily take few steps "backwards" in screen pixels and people would still not see the difference. I'm also sure that no one who creates apps for us do love to re-do their apps for a new resolution, so I'm pretty sure Apple don't want to cause more troubles to the developers by introducing a new pixel sizes in iPhones.

I personally do hope that Apple won't make an iPhone 5 a huge screen phone. I think the current screen size is close to perfect, you could maybe add about 0,5cm extra to it and I'm sure even this kind of small extra size area would make a big difference. I just checked from my iPod Touch and I think you can't really go bigger screen size what is already is because if you go, then you have to stretch your fingers to reach the top of the screen. Now you can easily reach every corner on the screen so why to fix something that works so well? 4" screen might sound cool but I don't personally believe it will do any favors to the usability than well being a huge screen. I rather have something like a 3,7" screen which is little bigger than the current one, A5, more ram and 64GB option (128GB would be a dream come true since the apps are getting more and more heavier and they also take more space from your iPhone/iPod Touch). But this is just what I think...

Can you imagine taking out a photo or a video in portrait view with a wedge shaped iPhone X. A tapered boarder is what makes the most sense. Unless the wedge is on both top and bottom of the phone creating a rocker/cradle form. That would be a camera/video nightmare given its thin form factor. :D

Take the iPad 2, rear plate, shriek it to the size of the iPhone and that is what then next iPhone X will fashion. :apple: seemed quite pleased with the iPad 2 thinness and form factor that with the R&D invested it will port it to the iPhone X. Why reinvent something when they have already tried and tested it with another product. :D

Top-bottom "wedge" sounds a bit like the SE Arc, a device quite well received. Even awared best camera-phone out there by some american tech thing, iirc.

A huge screen.
Do you even read this forum?
People have already been crying that a 4" screen would be too big and would drive them away from the iPhone.
The phone people get the marginally bigger screen and the gamers get the Touch with the huge screen and the larger memory to store all the games.
Seems like a natural to me.

That's still my thinking (as I've said previously in this thread). Maybe Apple wants to get a larger screen iPod touch out prior to the next Sony PSP (the Vita---5" screen handheld) and really push for the handheld gaming market. And maybe the "N94" is the iPhone 4 replacement (at the same size as the current phone).

made the very same argument a while back in these boards and got laughed at, as useless innovation somehow drives technology forward (dont ask me how). cant say i agree when it comes to bigger screen though. granted, there should be something like a near-optimal overall device-dimension, but besides that a bigger screen is for obvious reasons better.

p.s. circus in photo seems to have stopped, at least as far as professional photography goes. Take the G11 for example, sporting less mp than the G10 for the sake of improving picture quality.

Why is any credence being given to the cases that are being seen at the moment. They are all just cheap cases from companies taking a punt on the design of the presumed next generation iPhone.

Yes we all know it will come, but officially there isn't one coming, so how these case manufacturers know the size specs and can make cases is ridiculous.

They're taking a guess, which if proven right will prove profitable, if they're wrong it won't cost them too much because they've gone down a cheap route any way.

Until its something from a reputable manufacturer its all guess work.

The SE Arc (http://mobilityupdate.com/phones/se-xperia-arc-review/) has the thinner portion of the wedge pointing towards the center of the phone, an Arc similar to the Magic Mouse Top surface is what I was referring to. I am not saying its not possible, I am saying that the camera thickness might be of some concern. The thickness of the SE Arc can accommodate the camera. :)

I am also not refuting the quality of the SE Arc camera. :D

I'd like the iPhone 5 to be thinner and lighter .... smaller bezel .. 4 inch screen ... A5 dual core chip, 1GB Ram, 8mpx camera back and 2mpx front ... form factor > make it more curved .. iphone 4 looks like a brick.

all this + improvements brought by ios5 and icloud means iphone 5 will once again shame all the android and windows based crap they call "smartphones"

My predictions....

My predictions for the iPhone 5 are:

When it is announced, some people will "poo-poo" it.
Most of us will want it.
People will line up overnight to try and get one.
It will be sold out for weeks.
It will remain the #1 selling smart phone on the market.

There's my predictions for the iPhone 5. Oh... and it might have a larger screen. :D

These cases could represent a new iPod Touch. The iPhone 5 could very well continue the same form factor and the iPhone 4. Guess we'll see.

I give it a couple more years until the phone is so thin you can snap it in half by sitting down with it in your pocket.

Wouldn't that just let case manufactures make stronger cases? If its possible to make a phone thats 1mm think (lol) wouldn't you be able to buy a thicker case and maybe even have said case include an integrated battery thus making your phone have a longer battery life? just a thought...

4 inch screen would be perfect, while maintaining the same dimensions of the current iPhone 4. Oh and the teardrop design is way better than the current iPhone 4 design.
The iPhone 4 design is the worst out of all 4 phones released so far.
The 3G had the best looking and feeling design.
The only thing that made the 3G kept it from looking perfect was the ridiculous silver bezel, FFS remove those stupid bezels from iPhones, or at least paint them black to match the black phone or white to match the white phone.

4" screen is not difficult to use where you have to overstretch your fingers to reach every corner. You really don't know what you're talking about. Pretty much every that's used multiple smart phones will tell you that 4"-4.3" is like the ideal screen size for a phone. I think because you've used only an iPhone you think it's the end all be all perfection of everything in the universe or something so you can't be open to change. Just don't buy the iPhone 5 if you feel that strongly about it, stick with the 4.

IF by the slight chance Apple for some moronic reason sticks with the same screen size, then congratulations you got what you want. The rest of us will move on to something better.

So we have two case schematics now?

One that indicates a shorter, but wider iPhone, and another (the design that already has cases "everywhere") indicating a taller and wider iPhone, right?

Hmm.... now I'm not sure if this means that the new iPhone is for sure a redesigned phone, or if both case schematics have it wrong. I'm leaning towards the former now though. :)

I hope this won't be true... I like the design, that's not the problem. But like this, it'll be like the Samsung Galaxy phones. The phones get much bigger, and then they don't fit in your pocket anymore. Yes they are thinner, but wider and larger.
what type of pants are you wearing that cant fit a 4.5 inch device in your pocket?
get real.

People really think this looks good?

I think what he meant was that it would be uncomfortable in regular pant pockets. I for one pray this isn't the design, it's not appealing at all imo.

this 5.3 inch screen is gorgeous

I really don't see Apple going below 4.0 inches.

The iPhone 5 will be ridiculously awesome.

- thinner than any phone in existence

- Resolution will be at minimum 1280 x 720, if not higher.

- LED notification light

- LTE enabled.

Do this Apple, and maybe I will come to you. Also, iOS5 has to be on par with Android Gingerbread.
