jesus christ you people need to learn to accept change... i think its awesome and would totally prefer that to my iphone 4. props to you for mocking it up

What do you prefer about not having a home button? You really need to expand on that. What would replace it? How would it work?

I'm not feeling it.

WTF with the jesus c blow up ... just because someone mocks up a too wide square picture of what they want in the next iPhone and you are on board ... does not mean people are not up for change.

IMO ... screen is too square ... bad for gaming ... bad for video ... just horrible.

It looks really nice and futuristic, but I can't see it actually happening. When I hold my current iPhone 4 up to my ear, it is uncomfortable because of the shape of it - making it wider would make it even more uncomfortable. It also looks too thin to even have volume buttons or other switches.

It's a great concept but I just can't see it.

Here's a little walkthrough of my thought process:

First I saw the video of iOS 4.3 with the multitouch-controlled multitasking and saw how simple and intuitive it looked. Also, there are rumors that the next version of iOS devices would lose their home buttons. I then made a version of the iphone 4 without the home button, and it becomes pretty obvious how much space is being wasted on either end, especially with recent smartphones trending toward larger sizes.

By cutting the space on either end, this allows the screen to be expanded to 4" (aspect ratio preserved), while the size of the device shrinks (width becomes a tiny bit larger). Then I just made it a bit thinner.

For those concerned with one-handed home-buttoning, I'm sure there are other options. What about a three button setup along the top left edge: home, volume up and volume down. These can then become camera controls (shoot/zoom) when necessary.

Anyway, taking the button off the front was the only real 'choice' - the rest follows.

You did a good job, but I just don't prefer it. The body is too square, if Apple released this I'd have to pass. & the home button will never be omitted, so maybe for the sake of your concept you make the home button rectangle shaped, maybe just a little thicker than the ear piece.

Besides the form, I just don't find this thing easy to type with. Right now it's perfect because the keyboard (and screen for that matter) is raised a good 1/2 inch from the bottom of the entire device. That is perfect for typing and one-handed typing. With your concept people would have to reach far down with their thumb(s) in order to type.

I'm all for making the phone smaller, just don't take away that much off the top and bottom of the screen

I like the concept a lot. I just prefer the length of the other iPhones to stay like that, but just increase the screen size.
iPhone 5 with a larger screen + iPhone 5 rumors + iOS 5 with a great notification system (Lockinfo-like or look at Android phones) = Best iPhone update yet.

I'm kind of split on the home button for the iPhone actually. I think the gestures look much smoother on the iPad, but the iPhone may still need it. Maybe not. Who knows.

Still hate it. Too wide to comfortable operate with one hand. The height is not conducive to cradling it on your shoulder hands free. Still no Home button. No earpiece.

And the dimensions WERE wrong. Thanks for proving that.

Sorry, OP, but this reminds me too much of the "fatty" iPod nano. I'll pass.

No problem. Hate away.

BUT, the dimensions were not wrong. The screen ratio in every iPhone has always been 3:2. I used only a 3:2 ratio when I drew the screen. The screen is to the same dimensions as every other iPhone.

And I already proved it to you on the first page. Now, please stop being mean. Thanks.

The dimensions of the DEVICE are wrong. Too near a square, short and fat.

Well, the device is actually close to 3:2, like the screen, resulting from keeping the original screen ratio and also having an even bezel.

Maybe just a miscommunication, but on the first page you said that you couldn't believe the screen ratio was the same as the current iPhone (which it is, of course), and asked for proof, which was kind of weird, but it was easy so I threw it together and posted it.

Then you said 'so the dimensions WERE wrong' as if you had caught me out. I explained why the screen ratio is the same, and it appears to be more square because the screen is 3:2 and takes up more space on the device. Now the device dimensions are wrong?

Not the same kind of wrong, I take it, just the 'I don't like it' kind. That's fine - I just wanted to show people my concept of what the iPhone might look like in the future using some online rumors and intuition. No need to be so awkwardly rude about it.

I misread the original posts and was under the impression you stated the device's dimensions were the same, which they were most certainly not. In any case, a phone that is that square is not practical, no matter how hip or cool you may think it is.

Have you even considered what happens when you turn it sideways? Holding a device that shape and size while trying to use a virtual keyboard will be insanely awkward, if not plainly unusable. Games written with virtual "buttons" on the extreme sides would most likely have to be rewritten to move said buttons to a more comfortable place inward (which would just impede the view)

What happens if you get a software freeze up? Since you no longer have a Home button to force quit the app, how do you plan on remedying that?

Your idea may look nice for a moment, but it's neither practical nor functional.

Small update, I widened the bezel a bit and added some description. Optional home/camera button on side to take place of gesture if desired. Volume buttons double as zoom.

I'm thinking a shorter device will run into problems holding to your ear and not being tall enough to pickup your voice when you make calls.

I think this is why Apple didn't make the iPhone 4 any shorter. (that and they still need room for the sim card, cameras and battery)
