Love your concept but I also think it’s too wide. A taller more slimmer model would be easier to hold and talk with. That is something we can factor in. But I like the minimized bezel and lack of home button. I like the look. We could make the screen bigger and keep the phone smaller then most competitors.

That's kind of the balance. The screen ratio has to stay the same to accommodate past apps, so the only way to make the device thinner/taller is to change the bezel back to how it was, which is kind of against the original point. Also, because the screen ratio is so 'wide', I think if a thinner bezel works on the skinny side it should be able to work on the wide side as well. That being said, the bezel on the concept is wider than the side bezel on the current iPhone 4.

lol sure you did.

Yes, it's impossible for people to make mistakes while skimming through posts quickly. I believe a bridge is calling your name.

I'm intensely glad that Apple is taking feedback in a very limited fashion and has their own designers and engineers. If the next iPhone were to end up anything like this, I'd move on in a heartbeat to something else. It's neither practical nor functional.

Alright man, you don't like it. You've made your point. I just don't get why you're being so weird about a concept mockup on Macrumors. No one's attacking you.

Glad it's not just me. :p

Personally, I think the home button will probably be short-lived, even if it isn't removed in the next iteration. It's a lot of screen real-estate to give up when there may be a simpler, more intuitive option.

Right, and there may not be yet, although the multitouch gestures do look somewhat promising. My point was, 10 years from now, when this multitouch-interactive-screen stuff is pretty much like paper, I don't foresee every device having a physical home button. It looks like the trend is toward simplicity and intuitive controls. Just my take on it.

I like the home button. personally I dont want to get rid of the home button, I do like the multi touch gestures idea though.

On my droid x I liked having the back button as well but the iPhone doesnt need that

Apple tried the short/fatty design already.

Keep the same size phone but make the screen fill out a bit more and loose the button :)

Could do, and it might look great, but I don't think Apple would change their screen ratio at this point. (Also, may look a bit short turned sideways)

I will give you credit for the notifications. I admit I'm rather fond of that - it would be nice to have something similar on the lock screen. Good use of space. Enough information without giving anything away to prying eyes.

Form factor is still not practical.

Despite my extreme distaste for the form factor, I applaud your effort. It's very well done. I hope you plan on using your talent in the future.

looks awesome man. if apple can think of a cool way to get rid of the home button on the front while still making one hand gestures work nicely, then GET RID OF IT.

Lovin your design though, might be a BIT too short but cool nonetheless.

I misread the original posts and was under the impression you stated the device's dimensions were the same, which they were most certainly not. In any case, a phone that is that square is not practical, no matter how hip or cool you may think it is.

Have you even considered what happens when you turn it sideways? Holding a device that shape and size while trying to use a virtual keyboard will be insanely awkward, if not plainly unusable. Games written with virtual "buttons" on the extreme sides would most likely have to be rewritten to move said buttons to a more comfortable place inward (which would just impede the view)

What happens if you get a software freeze up? Since you no longer have a Home button to force quit the app, how do you plan on remedying that?

Your idea may look nice for a moment, but it's neither practical nor functional.

What do you suggest then? let me guess... you would keep the iPhone exactly the same...

I like the idea of the home button going away. Not because I think we should just get rid of it because it sucks, more because I know that to remove the home button (which works rather well) apple would have to come up with something that functions EVEN BETTER than the current home button set up. I don't know about you, but new ideas and concepts from apple excite me. I challenge you apple, blow me away...:apple:

A lot of people think it's too short. This is what I'm thinking:

The current iPhone 4 3:2 screen ratio is pretty wide, probably because both orientations of the device are important and widescreen might be awkward in either or both of them.

So, we have a 3:2 screen - closer to a square than most devices, where both orientations of the device are important. Shouldn't the bezel be pretty uniform around the device? With an even bezel, if the top and bottom bits are too thin, aren't the sides too thin too? And vice-versa? It is, after all, a place to hold your fingers when not in use.

Who knows, I'm probably wrong. Give me your feedback. :)

I don't think the uneven bevel on all sides really bothers anyone. Just a thought.

Nor do I, but if an even bezel would be the same or better, plus a larger screen, why not?

If there were no home button on the original iPhone, I doubt the bezel would be the way it is now.
