i thought this was obvious? last year's October release was a calculated, permanent move for the iPhone.

and my guess is that Apple will begin calling it just "iPhone" with the sixth release (just like they do with their computer products). Can you seriously imagine an "iPhone 10" in a few years? theres gotta be a point where they do this and i think its gonna be this year.

How would that work with 2 or 3 iPhone models on sale at the same time?

It would be confusing if the iPhone 3, 4 and 5 were all called iPhone instead.

Unless they called it the iPhone Air, iPhone Classic, iPhone Pro, etc.

Hold on, beloved 3GS...

my 3gs is being a slug lately. I want to hang out for the iphone 5 though but it will be a battle.

considering the average consumer STILL thinks the iPhone 4 is a 4G phone, I'm wondering what they will call the next update.

Would it be terrible if they just dropped the number system? People on this site are able to keep track of all of it but it's kind of amazing how many people out there have insane misconceptions about these devices just based on their number.

Then again it's certainly not hurting sales.

The only thing that annoys me more than iPhone 5 rumors is calling it the "iPhone 5". That makes no sense

6th iPhone = iPhone 6.

You do realize that the 2nd iPhone was called the iPhone 3G ?

They 'skipped' the 2

iPhone 1: iPhone
iPhone 3 series: iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4 series: iPhone 4, iPhone 4S

Next is the iPhone 5 series.

A November/December timeframe would make more sense. Apple captured almost 19% of holiday spending dollars because iPhones and iPads make great gifts, it seems likely they would want to do that again.

My 4 is getting rugged and I really want the next latest and greatest with updated hardware! I would hope for a summer release. For all of you saying they would sell better during Holiday qtr?? Who cares, they will sell like hot-cakes regardless when they are released! Most of us are on an every-other year cycle and come this summer I'm going to feel like something aint right if I can't upgrade!!

I have sources inside Apple. iPhone 5 will be coming out tomorrow.

True story. I'm an Analyst- I speak from authority for god knows what reason.

WWDC will probably be where the announce/launch Mountain Lion along with some updated Mac hardware. They may even announce iOS 6.

Otherwise, it makes sense to spread out the launches like that.

the new timeline makes sense, the new integrated LTE chipset ( for thinner devices) doesn't arrive until spring/early summer ... If apple is releasing a thinner iphone they will want the new chipset especially since it brings improved battery life.

I know, right? It would make just as little sense as calling the 5th iPhone the iPhone 4S! Oh, wait!

I'm not voicing my opinion what I think the next iPhone will be called, but I'm just pointing out that people were very adamant that anything other than iOS 5, A5, and iPhone 5 together did not make sense and look what happened.

Remove the numbers

There are already plenty of posts debating whether it will be the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 6, I don't know which it will be, but I'd go 5 if I had to guess. Us MacRumors users know it's the sixth iteration of the phone, but would the average person in the street?

I can see a time when Apple removes the numbering scheme and just calls it the iPhone. The advertising etc would just say the 'new' iPhone, when the design changes it's obviously new anyway. It's only when its an S increment that it isn't visibly clear its new.

I say this because although up to now the numbering has made sense, it sounds rather odd when you think a few years forward and you're talking about the iPhone 11 or iPhone 15. When the phone reaches a certain version number the numbers stop meaning much.

I can see the same happening for the iPad.

Apple didn't promote the iPod with the version number, those who cared would know which generation it was, but most folks would just see it as the updated iPod.

Yeah, it's the 6th iPhone released, with 6th generation hardware, the A6 processor, running iOS 6 ... It *must* be the iPhone 5!

Yes, it is the 6th iPhone released, but the processor might be A5X and maybe the software will be 5.5… You never know until it's out…

Since the next phone will have LTE, i will call it the iPhone 4GS.

iMore[/i][/url] last week that Apple is targeting an October launch for an LTE-enabled iPhone 5, with that source also apparently having accurately named March 7 as the date of Apple's iPad 3 media event. Apple has yet to officially announce that iPad 3 event, but the date has been confirmed as accurate.

I had to read this one twice. How can a source accurately name March 7 as the date, and then state that Apple hasn't yet conformed it? That's quite a streatch.

My speculations:
  • Touch screen
  • Can be held in BOTH hands

:D nothing like setting the bar low sometimes

How do they know? Apple is the most secretive company ever!!!

We already knew this. *sigh*

Well no. There were folks who actually believed the summer rumors that were floated out a few weeks ago.

Nobody knows for sure but there is very little chance that Apple would release a new iPhone so soon after another that is still very hot.

That's because it used 3G tele. That's why so many thought the iPhone 4 was using 4G tele.

Since the 4S is for Siri, perhaps the next iPhone will be the 4LTE. :p
