Bottom. I plug my phone into the car stereo. If its on the top the phone sits upside down in the center console.

On a related note, I'd love to see the sleep button move to the right side. It makes so much more sense to be there, than to be on top where it's difficult and cumbersome to reach for. On the side, your thumb or fingers are naturally there.

I think it's good on the bottom, it will fit in your pocket very well and when you pull it out of your pocket you wont have to turn it upside down to change your songs.

Bottom. I pocket my phone screen towards the leg upside down. I find the headphone jack on the top pretty annoying, so hopefully the rumors are true.

The bottom placement makes no sense. I can't see how battery cases are going to work with that placement. Also, it's going to create cable strain, which is why eventually after a few years all of my earphones fail - why accelerate the process? If the rumors are true, then bad :apple:.

I've had power cords fail but never head phones.

While Apple doesn't design based on what third parties develop, a simple pass through built into the battery case would work just fine. My first MP3 player was the Rio Kharma, and it had a docking station that operated in a similar way so that you could still dock and listen at the same time. Not sure I follow you with the cable strain. How are we getting more strain with a bottom design?

Wouldn't like it on the bottom because when I Skype on my iPhone I usually lean it against something on my desk and always have headphones in, wouldn't be possible if the jack was on the bottom.

Top or bottom, there is a 50/50 chance someone will complain.

I'm indifferent on the issue.

One consideration, that could be solved:

On my Nexus S 4G, the headphones jack is on the bottom next to the charging port just like in the iphone speculation pictures. If I am in my car, and it is plugged into the aux port on my car and car charger at the same time, often there the interference from the charging will affect the sound.

This is not an issue of the phone, it's an issue of having the analog audio cable so close to charging wire. Buying an insulated audio cable would fix the problem, or putting the regular audio cable through a magnetic loop would also fix it.

This hasn't been an issue on the iPod touch because I think the 30pin dock connector forces the audio cable to be far enough away.

Just something I am sure Apple will consider.

the interference is nothing to do with the proximity of the headphone port to the usb port. it is due to the electricity running through the usb and through the headphone cable creating a loop. it happens to most devices when you have both a usb and a headphone cable plugged in regardless of the position

The iPhone doesn't seem to have an issue. I am pretty sure proximity does make a difference. It does with car audio systems.

I've always wanted the bottom. Its about time if you ask me!

much easier to put it, take out of pocket whilst listening to music

I prefer the port on top. But considering the iPod touch and Nano have it on the bottom. It is quite likley the next iPhone might move the port to the bottom too.

I believe the phrase is "first world problems".

not sure why you brought an injured child into it though

Because all the whining about the placement of the headphone jack is pointless and really makes no difference in the larger scheme of things. Thanks for the correction and of course in this situation it fits. That's why I brought an injured child into it. Just trying to give people a bit of perspective.

There is always going to be something worse to "whine" about. I thought the MacRumors site would a good place to "whine" about Apple.

I understand the sentiment, but people don't come to MacRumors to maintain a larger perspective. The site is dedicated to a niche area and the question fell into that niche. For many, I would expect this site serves as an escape to the real-life problems that you brought up.

If they got rid of the home button they could make the device not have a top or bottom then the headphone jack would be where it suits for all of us.

Top for me

I find the headphone jack at the top convenient enough, but as the phone is usually in my pocket when I'm using the headphones, it doesn't really matter.
My biggest design beef is with the camera lens location. It should be moved to the opposite edge, near the volume buttons. This would make photography more natural, and reduce the chances of the thumb straying into the pic.
