Wow. That's an ugly phone.

This just shows how there is so much variation between what different users want. Personally I like this design alot, although I am a huge fan of the original iPhone. I want something more curved that feels good in the hand, but not the plastic feel of the 3G/3Gs. I think a fusion of the orig iPhone and iPhone 4 would be ideal, just hopefully either eliminating the fragile glass back panel in favor of aluminum or liquid metal, or finding a way to make the glass much stronger.

If thats what it ends up looking like it will be a huge step back in aesthetics from the iPhone 4. That looks like any droid/htc/whatever out there!

The design of this looks fairly good. The problem is it looks cheap, but that's expected. Wouldn't mind the next iPhone looking like this as of course it'll look far superior.

Ahh, good point! After my previous post I've reconsidered :D and think if it were Apple making the phone and not the chinese knockoff pictured it will surely look tons better.

Every one of them can fit in your palm? I'm glad you're here to tell us these things!

Have you ever held a current model iPod Touch in one hand like you would hold a phone? Oh yes, it fits in your palm. Is it comfortable? Not unless your idea of 'comfortable' is holding a spatula by the blade, rather than the handle.

And just for the record, I was probably using Apple products while you were still in nappies, so I'm no troll. I just happen to hold Apple to a high standard when it comes to placing function over form. Evidently you are content with whatever happens to fit within your palm.

Huh?

So you want the iPhone 5 to have a handle?

Hard to read but it says in the back "Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in USA".

Funny how they only changed China -> USA :)

Actually, they changed more than that. It is rife with spelling errors.

It actually says:
Designed by Apolle in California Assemeaded in USA

it was only a matter of time until someone leaked them to the chinese knockoff market ... no different than pirated movies being leaked before they are in theatres

Ugly ass phone !!

I think the iPhone 5 will be completely different. First, no metal border, it was utter ugly on both the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

Second, it's will be slimmer for sure, but also bigger to enable the space to have a big screen (although if they reduced the ugly bezels up and down, they shouldn't need to).

Third how is China still able to make ****ing raw copy of trademarks and still be able to do business with us? **** copycats !

Easy fix...

Apple could stop the counterfeiting quickly if it told the Chinese government that unless the piracy is stopped, Apple will move ALL the manufacturing of its products from FoxConn in China to companies in Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand.

Wow! So many Americans live in a shell and have no idea what the rest of the world is like. In most countries outside the USA, it's perfectly legal to open an identical but counterfit store directly accross the street from an existing legitimate store. Other countries have a "free" society that doesn't place all these restrictions on how companies operate.

and what countries are these that you speak of? There is a difference between legal and people just have better things to worry about.

I don't plan on getting the iP5 as by the time my contract is up i'll be closer to the 6; But if this is it i am definitely not getting it! Looks awful!

1. Pretty funny seeing all the one-liner "ugly" posts. These are probably the same idiots that said "ugly, fake" when the prototype iPhone 4's showed up then immediately said crap like "Only Apple could make a phone this nice" at release. Guarantee they will be the same ones immediately changing their tune when/if this turns out to be real. Sheep.

For the record, it looks very similar to the "spy" pics that 9to5mac posted a few days ago.

2. Threatening to move Apple manufacturing to Vietnam, Korea, Thailand is laughable. You people have no idea what you're talking about.

Good starting point!

I think it's foolish to think this looks ugly just because it's a knock off. It looks just like an Apple phone would. Sure, it lacks the refinement of an Apple product, but the form is spot on. This thing is thinner than an iPhone 4 and I'm assuming wider and longer. The screen is tiny, but I'm sure Apple will add the rumored larger screen. I can easily see this being the next iPhone, but you never know with rumors.

Edit: One more thing. Could the front and back curved pieces be related to the curved glass rumor?

Ewwwww, looks über-fugly. The screen is smaller, the body is thicker. Hell no!!!!!!
Thicken than what? Its thinner than the iPhone 4.

I think this one looks pretty good, to me it just looks like an iPhone 4 but with rounded edges on the front and back glass and that little change made it super ugly? Weird.

I think the 5 will look like this but with a bigger screen and some other stuff compared to this, but the overall design is probably pretty much like this.

You're sadly misinformed if you believe that. China has anti-pirating and anti-counterfeiting laws in place. The problem is they're seldom enforced, and the "shanzhai 山寨" culture surrounding the manufacture and sale of these products brings in tens of billions of dollars per year. Just for example, Shanghai authorities closed down many of the shops selling fake DVDs and Blurays before the Shanghai Expo, some were forced to move to less visible locations, others had to keep different hours, and quite a few built secret rooms with fake shelving that slid open to reveal the pirated movies in back. After the Expo, most of the shops reopened.

It's certainly not a "free" society in any sense, but it is a corrupt and poor society that is reluctant to take jobs away from people, especially when they're copying foreign goods and keeping the profits for themselves. The mentality that it's Chinese people's right to rip off foreign IP because of hundreds of years of perceived exploitation and shame is deeply ingrained in the culture. Most Chinese are sympathetic to this view - the problem is it stifles local innovation as well, as domestic IP is also not respected.

China is a WTO member, and other member countries would be well within their rights to impose sanctions and tariffs if they desired. Whether this will actually happen is debatable.

What do you mean comfortable to hold!? Its a phone! Not a pair of shoes.. Every one of them can fit in your palm!

Oh this blasted iphone 4 i cant bare to hold it in my hands any longer, not with its cornered edges that knife into my hand and cause agonizing pain!

Youre talking nonsense.

not at all. hes talking ergonomics. even apple's hideous "hockey puck" mouse fit in your hand -- yet was not comfortable to use. many feel the pre-ip4 designs were better designed for palming in your hand, as opposed to the hard-edged slab design of ip4.

Based on most of the other comments (and voting), it looks like those of us who value ergonomics over cutting edge aesthetics are in the minority my friend. I guess the iPhone is a fashion accessory more than a phone for a lot of people.

fallacy: correlation does not imply causation. many other factors.

Gotta say, put a 4" screen on that and it's 'taint too bad. Kind of what the 4 should have looked like.

Actually the 4 is exactly what it should have looked like, if you need examples of poorly designed phones from Apple see:
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
