A Forbes blog by Elizabeth Woyke claims that despite recent rumors to the contrary, Near Field Communications (NFC) payment systems may indeed be coming to the iPhone 5.

Woyke's sources include second hand information from an entrepreneur in the NFC industry.
From what I hear, it is possible the iPhone 5 will include NFC. An entrepreneur who is working on a top-secret NFC product told me today that he believes the iPhone 5 will have NFC and cited a friend who works at Apple as a reliable source for the information.
NFC manufacturers are also expecting the iPhone 5 will arrive with an NFC payment system.

While we're sure that Apple engineers are working on the technology, this friend-of-a-friend report seems less credible than the Independent's report which claimed that Apple had informed international carriers that NFC was not coming to this year's iPhone revision. Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 5 this summer.

...

I would say a friend of a friend is actually more plausible than apple telling carriers anything about the iPhone 5 at all

It is easy decision for Apple, just like the In App Purchase, they will make some commission along the way somehow.

Yeah right, since when does apple tell carriers 4 Months in advance what technology it's next phone is going to have. And since NFC requires their cooperation, oh wait... Carriers have absolutely no need to know about this. I say bull on all of it. No one knows outside apple.

I wonder if this is going to be like watching a tennis match until the phone comes out? It has it, it doesn't, it does, it doesn't. :D

Is it the point of NFC to get rid if the cards I'm carrying around? That sounds very Apple like.

I imagine the hardware is straightforward and the software might be there or follow later.

As far as I'm concerned, I got no complaints with iPhone4. They could leave it another year and still be ahead of the competition. So whatever they add this time round is going to be a bonus... Same external design, with dual core and more storage feels right to me.

Oh crap! One more excuse to not create a proper antenna for clear phone calls. If past history is an indicator, this should also give Apple a way to justify the tiny display.

I hope they do put NFC in it. It's not used much yet in the US but is used in varying ways in other countries, countries where there are Android phones with NFC. It's not just about credit cards, folks.

NFC or LTE. The industry is really speeding up. Just iOS 5, A5, and 64gb in June would not be staying far enuf ahead of the pack.

We will see NFc or 4g or hopefully both!

But Apple is already advertising it (sort of) in its new commercial.

You're kidding right? in some major aspects iOS wise, and hardware wise iPhone 4 is completely behind.

Maybe the iPhone 5 will be the first smartphone to incorporate quantum computing and it'll be in a superposition of both having and not having NFC.

Tiny?? Sure, the screen isn't quite as big as some rivals, but definitely not too small. I just upgraded from an N95 which has a 2.6" screen and my iPhone's 3.5" screen is a distinct improvement!

This should really be page two....who cares if NFC is on the phone or not. I'm sure if a credit card that has no power. No weight. No thickness. Can have a form of this then it's nothing to put it in a phone...tape your damn credit card to the back of your phone and your iPhone 1st-4th gen can have the same tech!!!!
