which is it, does it have NFC or not. Just the other day, we were told it didn't have NFC.

Actually they are going to skip NFC and go straight to KFC. The iPhone 5 will be available in black, white and extra crispy.

So if your wrist is too limp to run a card through a slot, how are you going to wave a half-pound phone around?

(I always get behind the people who have to try all four orientations before getting the edge with the stripe, facing the right way, so maybe it would be worth it.)

Tiny?? Sure, the screen isn't quite as big as some rivals, but definitely not too small. I just upgraded from an N95 which has a 2.6" screen and my iPhone's 3.5" screen is a distinct improvement!

I just assumed by the name he is Australian and therefore the post was completely sarcastic.

Is this device for just CC's? Or can we all put the 30 cards that every damn store wants you to have just to get the weeks ad price.

I've never encountered a store that you couldn't just give them your phone number if you "forgot" your card. I always "forget" my card....

I'm assuming this will mean someone who has NFC activated to just swipes their iPhone near the receiver and then inputs their PIN/password through their iPhone, that is the only way this makes sense.

I also hope this doesn't lead to jailbreak hacks where people just easily gather other people's NFC information (that's really the only thing I fear).

I would love if I was able to place all of my cards (and stupidly annoying points cards that every retailer has) on the phone and just able to carry my phone + cash (which i barely have on me anyways) instead of all the cards, which bulk up my wallet to no end.

I'm wondering this too. If we could just put everything in there that would be great. Would the stores have to have NFC enabled equipment, or is the technology in the stores already there?

It's also about interacting with other devices, not just replacing the counter-cash-slap in the shop.

Interacting with other hardware to make things like automated connectivity using a simple hardware tap. seamless data sharing or transfer between devices rather than negotiation a software interface... things like that.

This makes me nervous...

Of course, I've been the victim of identity theft twice in the last year...

When rumors turn ugly: Who to believe? Why do we care?

If it has NFC then great, if it doesn't then great. This is just one of those rumors that doesn't need this kind of attention.

I can't imagine not adding NFC, it would be very useful in Japan, they have a lot of NFC based commerce (including trains and vending machines).

I wouldn't hold my breath, as with 3D, NFC hasn't shown up in xxx video arcades... yet.

Neat? Yeah, I guess. Unless it is basically universally adopted at all locations where I use a form of payment, it's useless to me.

Who the he$$ cares about NFC except the ones trying to sell you something mindlessly.......

That's an incredibly stupid argument. ANY technological advancement should be welcomed.
Just because you don't feel you have a need for it right now does not mean no one cares.
Besides, even FEWER people care about your trolling "who the he$$ cares" attitude/opinion than about NFC payment technology.

(Though personally I'd rather not wait for some idiot in line to turn on his phone, unlock it, find the icon, start the app, and activate the NFC transmitter when he/she could have just swiped their card, signed and have been done with it.)

Somewhat agreed. It'll be nice to have, but probably won't be used that often.
Though it would be cool to just be able to walk into an Apple store, turn on the app on an old iPhone to pay for the upgrade to a new one.
(Which once the tech is in the iPhone...I'm betting it'll be available(used) in the Apple store.)
:D

I just thought about this but don't know the answer. When referring to the iPhone and NFC all the talk is about purchases. What about being able to use the iPhone with NFC to replace my work ID card? My work ID card uses what I think is NFC chip in it and hold it to the door to allow me in the building.

Is this the same kind of thing/tech?

This should really be page two....who cares if NFC is on the phone or not. I'm sure if a credit card that has no power. No weight. No thickness. Can have a form of this then it's nothing to put it in a phone...tape your damn credit card to the back of your phone and your iPhone 1st-4th gen can have the same tech!!!!

You would have a point IFF NFC was ONLY for transactions....
But like any wireless tech it's not intended for a SINGLE purpose.
If apple included the radio in their next line of computers (or offered a USB dongle) NFC could be used for proximity login (imagine setting your phone next to your laptop to login, instead of entering username & password).
Or it could be used to initiate wireless syncing (which would be AWESOME).
