I waited until 6 am east last week to order my phone, I got the two week delay. It said I should receive October 5. I get in line at my local ATT store this morning, get my ticket guaranteeing that I get a phone, I log in and apple says it shipped at 7:45. Now that it has shipped I cant use the upgrades. Apple is playing games with tier numbers. I wasted 2 hours this morning.

Or perhaps Apple's shipment estimate was accurate and you will get your phone sometime next week (within 2 weeks of pre-ordering)?

So the iPhone 4s is "obsolete" because the 5 came out today?

That's a bit silly.

No, unlike most Android phones, Apple continues to make newer versions of iOS available to older phones. iOS 6 is still compatible with the 3GS from over 3 years ago. I'd like to know how many Android phones out there are over 3 years old and are running Jelly Bean, my guess would be none. Especially considering that the large majority of Android phones are still running Gingerbread which is almost 2 years old.

Seriously? The iPhone 5 is an all new design. I am sure however the 5S or whatever the minor refresh is called will draw even larger lines.

I'm confident at this point Apple could release any old thing and people would go nuts for it because it's an iPhone. What a nice place to be at for a corporation. So much hype that no matter what you release you can't lose.

The iPhone 5 is far from a new design. It's the same dull candybar style phones we've seen for years. They made it longer and changed the back, that's not innovative or new, that's just knowing whatever they do people will line up and buy it. I mean their bragging a new feature of iOS 6 on iPad is a clock, a clock! And Facebook integration (don't have to switch from camera to FB app anymore) as a new feature other phones had for a few years. Then you have the OS that like the phone, looks pretty much the same as 2007. Yet people still swarm the stores to buy the phone.

And that is just sad that Apple could release any old thing and people would go nuts for it. It's sad how many people just blindly throw money to Apple for the newest iPhone as soon as it comes out. I walked past an AT&T store and an Apple store today and people are just standing in line playing on their iPhones 4s waiting for the iPhone 5. Most of these people don't care what the phone does and can't do, it's a status symbol, a cool toy. And hey, that's great for Apple to just know they'll rake in cash because people will line up and buy whatever they put out under the iPhone/iPad names.

But after years of saying how good Apple is, I can see why people call the iPhone buyers sheep. It's a shiny not much has changed since last one device that looks similar and people just buy it right up. How many of these iPhone users even know Apple makes computers? Do they even question other devices or just run in line to get the next iPhone? And of course when will people tire of the same old thing of iPhone and move on?

Apple keeps making their great products even better. Until I feel they're giving me the middle finger I see no reason to not have the best performing phone when they release it. Did you read the ifixit tear down and all of the stunning reviews? Huge upgrade from 4S.. it IS worth it to me. I've spent all week looking at all of the little things they've tweaked and upgraded.
P.S. I have an iPad 3, iPod classic, two Apple TVs, a 27 inch iMac, a MacBook air, and a 4S.

you guys are all losers, why don't you try going out and banging chicks

Maybe the UPS person will be a chick ;)

you can not imagine how many people share this point of view...
Length of waiting queues does not preclude a semi failure for iphone 5

I'm sure there are many, but as long as Apple continues to sell out of their pre-order inventory in just 1 hour and people continue to line up for days... They will be content giving us small incremental upgrades and small design changes. It's like when hamsters are being fed little drops at a time from a tube....... They still keep coming back and dont require more..........

Apple is in a very good place right now because their risks on the iPod, iPhone and iPad all paid off in a huge way. The demand for those three products have put them in an extremely safe zone of not needing to risk introducing a new product to spark sales. They will be good for at least a few more years doing nothing but spec bumps and design changes. Eventually they will have to take that risk again and that will be the true test of Apple without Steve.

Very true.

In my opinion, they should have jumped into the "smart watch" arena that Pebble and others are aiming for. At the very least, theirs would be an entry in that space. At the most, they could set a gold standard for similar devices again.

Maybe we'll be surprised in October, but I'm thinking no. iPad Mini will fill a niche, and will be good in their product portfolio, but again, nothing innovative.

You're right, I'm not going to buy a new iPhone until my demand for time travel is appeased. Who's with me!!!

Apple has created a phone with the same processor, battery, display capabilities as much larger phones (like the GS3) on the market. All while reducing the weight and thinness. You may not like a thinner, lighter phone but the fact is the engineering that goes into each new iPhone is top notch. Personally the hardware is what has impressed me the most about the new iPhone - its the software that's gotten a little stale but I still prefer it over other offerings (which I have used).

And Apple doesn't bother with gimmicks like "flip to mute" or "palm touch pause something or other", heralding these ridiculous "features" as innovations. They also don't portray competing fan bases as stupid, mindless idiots in their ads either.

What's your idea of innovative??

I also think we are hitting a feature plateau in the mobile phone market. aside from NFC and wireless charging (which inductive charging plates isn't the right way, but something like uBeam is working on) are really last technologies they could add. and of those two NFC is really the only one that is market ready.

the days of "our phone is the fastest" are quickly numbered we are hitting a point where they just don't need to be that much faster than they already are. PCs hit this plateau a few years ago, and they then pushed on the portability. but phones have been hitting that design aspect too.

what i'm saying is the next few years are going to be either boring or amazing fantastic as new ideas and innovations take form

I think many people here feel innovative is doing something BRAND NEW. Even if that brand new something is a useless gimmicky feature no one will use or care about....

Certainly doing something new is part of innovation - but the other part is how that new thing affects the culture surrounding it. In this way, Apple was extremely innovative because they did something no one else had done (creating a viable touchscreen smartphone) which revolutionized the industry and has led us to where we are today.

If Apple were to create a "smartwatch" and next year all you saw on people's wrists were smartwatches (made by different companies even) I'd say Apple was innovative in that arena. Sure there were others who made smartwatches first, but their products didn't affect a change in our daily lives.

I agree completely. I think much of the innovation will be behind the scenes stuff that most consumers won't even realize. The types of things Apple has done with the iP5 like making the phone more efficient, powerful all while scaling down the thickness and weight. Fine tuning the software and hardware to work so seamlessly together you can't distinguish one from the other.

Most of these innovations will most likely result in better battery life. That's one of the biggest consumer wants and something that can still be improved upon I think. Though it would take a big innovation in the arena of battery power.

UPS delivered at 9:30am

My wife signed at home. The UPS guy said with a big smile on his face, "Today is my favorite day of the year. I am a hero to everyone - they are all so happy to see me!"

Carriers were still able to offer iPhone 5s on launch day for quite a while. When I saw Apple was already at 2 weeks, I ordered through AT&T so I could get it today.

I ordered mine at 7am PST from AT&T. 6 hours after Apple went to 2-3 weeks. I'm still getting mine today. FedEx says it's already on the truck.

Langhorne, PA - Oxford Valley Mall

Decided to drive by mall around 8:30am on the way to work. My brother in-law was in the parking lot holding his new iPhone 5. He said there are a couple of people waiting now but he just walked right in and out. I walked up and there were 5 people in line. I was out of there in no time and only 1 person was behind me. The "rush" was over and they still had a LOT of phones left.

Is Apple still shipping iPhones with bugs? I had one crawling across the display on my 4S and had to return it. If they still can't get these devices out of factories without bugs then the working conditions must be appalling.

This made me laugh
