If they want to compete with the other smart phones that have been rolling out 4" screen, Apple needs to do the same. Even if the iPhone 5 gets a larger screen I know that the 6th generation would still be the bigger update.

I'm on the iPhone 4 and have the 2 year contract and will stick with it because I know it's smart to go the 2 years because Apple knows many has the iPhone 4 since it was the big update to the iPhone and that many people is sticking with the iPhone 4 because of their 2 year contract and to get those people to update their iPhone they will wait the 2 years to bring another big update.

Looking forward to 2012 iPhone. New redesign!

if this is new iphone, then no, thank you. i don't want bigger screen. what for? i'ts a ****ing phone not a portable slice of bread. also the side bezel seems to be too thin, could cause problems. I believe if this pic is real it will be (as others suggested) the small iphone.

i really don't get ppl claiming that iphone needs bigger screen. i've got a friend with htc desire hd. it's funny to watch him operating that phone. it's awkward to use, he needs to use both hands and so on.

if this is new iphone, i'll keep my iphone 4.

Just to let you and all the others on here saying the same thing, your all WRONG very WRONG.
Have the following stopped or affected the iPhones sales or Apples's ability to compete with other manufactures?

iPhone 1: 2G, crap camera, no user upgradable memory (On all versions) crap Bluetooth support.

3G, crap camera, still lacking in bluetooth support.

3GS, still crap camera, old design.

4: 3.5" screen, video calling that only works over WiFi, same interface and OS design as the iPhone 1.

I think not, Apple have been SERIOUSLY lacking behind the competition with it's camera in almost every version yet it didn't impact sales one bit, the OS is the same and doesn't affect it, the screen could be the same and again the same thing. Because people like the iPhones SIZE, not 'oh look at me I have a 5" screen on my massive slab of a mobile phone".....

I dunno about this one.. it could just be the angle.

Here is an iPhone 4 from an angle - it looks like the lines are crooked but they're not, obviously.

SYGnz.jpg

Absolutely. As much as I think, this is fake, I won't draw rectangle or parallel lines to check for constant linearity. Angles make a lot of difference and its a simple rule of 3D planar structures. So one cannot impress a 1D or 2D surface over a 3D that way.

Never seen a 1D surface, anyone?

It is obviously NOT the camera angle because IF it would the angle the drawn lines would cross each other on the other side and furthermore the effect would be given to both sides although it would be less on the right side but still recognizable.

Its scrap, bad enginieered or just a bad fake

To be fair the iPhone 4 has been proven to have by far the best camera in a mobile phone. Megapixels mean nothing with such a small sensor. Secondly, pretty sure FaceTime over WiFi only is the carriers doing, and not apples. Last but not least, there is simply no other smart phone that has come anywhere close to selling as well as the iPhone 4. Apple might not have the same slice of the pie as Android and it's 40 different phones, but it certainly has better profits.

I was able to determine the size of the screen using a computer ruler. I compared the home button size to an iPhone 4 (assuming its the same size on the "iPhone 5"). The results are below:

"iPhone 5" in photo (photo sizes; not actual sizes):
corner to corner = 3.59375 in.
Home button diameter in photo = 0.34375 in.

"iPhone 4":
Home button diameter = 0.4375 in.

Conversion of "iPhone 5" photo screen size:
3.59375 x (0.4375 / 0.34375) ≈

4.5 inches

Soooo, either the photo is fake, or the iPhone 5 will have a 4.5 inch screen!!! :D

Seeing how the current iPhone can only maximally hold a 4 inch screen, I'm concluding:

FAKE!

I did a similar calculation. If the home button on the photo is the same size as the iPhone 4, then you will find the screen size has not changed from 3.5 inch. What the photo is showing, whether or not it is fake, is an iPhone that is about 25% smaller in area with the same screen size. New dimensions of iPhone 5 would the be 4 inches by 2 inches versus 4.5 by 2.31 inches.

Resolution is dots per inch. (many people confuse the number of pixels for resolution. It's not).

mmm, no it isn't. Resolution is the overall number of pixels the panel has, not dots per inch. Dots per inch is just that, dots per inch, or sometimes referred to as pixel density.

Example. I can have a 23" PC monitor that runs at a resolution of 1920x1080 which is the same as my 55" tv set. So they both have identical resolution, which means they all have identical number of "dots" but the 23" has far higher density, meaning those dots are closer together meaning there are more dots per inch.

In summary, if they add pixels, resolution increases.

The Nokia N8 camera is MUCH better then the iPhone. Yes the iPhone 4's camera is better and pretty good, but for one the cover MUST be recessed as it get's scratched, Apple need to learn to give it more features, it should have 1080p recording. So whilst it's an improvement, to state it's 'by far the best' is just not true. A switch for camera and video and a shutter button a great camera do not make. They MUST give it more features and settings.

As for Facetime, rubbish, I have been able to get a phone with video calling that works over 3G for several years now, so for Apple to blame the carriers is just them being Apple and refusing to use set standards and trying to force everyone to use their own standard. And then for Apple, in the UK at least, to use Facetime as the feature it uses in it's television advert campaing is just a joke, and to be frank, embarrasing for Apple. Because in the UK we all know we have had video calling available for so long but it never took off, but for Apple to try and tell you 'hey look we have video calling now too but you HAVE to use WiFi for it' is as I said a joke.

It doesn't take too much to imagine a few different possible iPhone 5 designs.

"I" predict no home button AT ALL on the face of the phone. In fact, I can easily picture the entire face of the phone being the actual video screen. There would be no black above or below the viewing area because the entire phone will be a viewing area.

I predict if that's the case I won't buy it.
But assuming you are right ,what about facetime and the earpiece?
Oh wait, assuming you are right is idiotic of me.

Apple better be making a 4" screen size at least, for the iPhone-next, will be only way to bring us Android fans back.

I was an iPhone1 first day buyer loved it, but since my iPhone3G, have moved on to Android, and very happy with my Nexus-One, and I love my rooted EVO 4G w/custom ROM. But there doesn't seem to be anything huge or ground breaking coming from Android until Fall, all the devices that have come out after my EVO, just seem like minor updates and refreshes, nothing majorly better than my EVO. And I want an upgrade this Summer, will most likely be the iPhone-next or maybe the EVO2.

But the early rumors of the iPhone-next having a 4" screen...dual core...better retina display...revised iOS5 hopefully adding some stuff found in jailbreaking...and the top part is a rumored battery to rival all others...if all this becomes a reality this Summer, you will see a ton of Droid fans come running to the new iPhone.

I just want a better camera. I don't need one. Just want one. A better screen would be nice too.

I've mellowed since turning 30.

The side bezel being thin won't change anything. The iPhone 4 in its form can fit a larger screen without a design change. The side bezel is nothing but paint on the glass.

Apple's model of offering only one model of a phone has worked brilliantly over the last several years since the 2G was released in 2007. However there are craploads of competition now and I feel that it's going to bite them in the a$$ if they don't adapt to the market.

Everyone remembers how Motorola almost met the end when they rode the success of the RAZR out 4 years too long. *When they woke up it was almost donecakes for them. Had it not been for their Droid phone, that would have been it for them.

Fast forward to the now. If Apple wants to keep the majority of it's customers, they're going to eventually have to start offering some choices to it's customers or they're going to start losing customers in the smartphone market. All you iSheep can refrain from the Apple is greatness crap and watch it happen if they don't adjust. Just because less than half of you don't want a bigger screen doesn't justify the ignorance of Apple ignoring the fact that indeed the majority of us DO WANT a bigger screen.

I have had each of the iPhones Apple has marketed, but will not continue the trend for the next if they don't offer the choice or sole option of at least a 4" screen.

I agree with you on this 100%. Apple needs to give a selection base for their hit products. Just like with the iPod and Macbooks they have different models to suit different needs of customers. The iPhone and iPad should at least offer another something as a choice to help adopt to a consumers needs. A 4" screen would be a brilliant start and a smaller iPad would too. I find the iPad too bulky to use daily for what its marketed for and the iPhone a little small to completely delete the iPad from my lifestyle. All in all I would love to see a larger iPhone screen, 64gb capacity or a smaller iPad size with 128gb capacity. We will find out exactly what Apple has behind the steel curtains when the announcements come in. Hopefully Apple won't dissapoint too much. They had so much riding on the iPhone 4 and when that hype wasn't up to standards due to antenna issues and breakability I think they really went back and hit this hard. Especially with Steve Jobs out of the picture. They need something to really bring them 10 steps ahead of the game in the tablet and mobile phone market
