My Prediction:

4 inch 720p resolution screen edge-to-edge glass
1gb ram
32gb/64gb options
8mp cam
A6 processor
black/white options
LTE

conservative predictions since that is what happened with the iphone 4S. like someone said earlier in the thread, "just enough to warrant an upgrade for most and leave out enough to piss off the techies" :D I think that's a great summary of the sales strategy of any good company.

I agree with this but apple set a precedent they won't likely go back there will be three levels of memory cheap, good and great. They know for every whiner out there who scrapes pennies to get the 16 there are people who can drop an extra 100 just to have the biggest an baddest iPhone available.

Why is it not a huge upgrade? Because it looks the same?

No....Only thing that's kinda better on the iPhone 4S is Siri, Better CPU, and Camera. That's it. Where on the iPhone it was huge with Retina Display and Front Facing Camera and Facetime with a thinner body as well as a better CPU and Camera.

Also, the antennae design was huge.

Also, better glass, oh yeah a Gyroscope too.

That's a huge upgrade from 3GS to 4.

Only upgrade on the 4 to 4S is better CPU, better Camera and Siri, not so huge.

Did you read a thing the guy wrote? The 4S is the fifth iPhone model apple has produced.

I guess the iPhone 3G should be called the iPhone 2? And the iPhone 3GS should be called the iPhone 3?

The 4S is the iPhone 5. Why don't people understand this?

The next iPhone will be sporting iOS 6 and will be the sixth generation of the device. It would make zero sense to call it the iPhone 5.

I agree with you completely. Yet for some reason many here, are so emotionally invested in what the next phone is designated as.

I buy a phone and use it, without obsessing over what it's called. Perhaps I'm missing out on all the fun of arguing over what it's called... But I don't think so.

The next iPhone is will be the iPhone 5, no doubt.

They are not going in any order obviously. Think about it. The 3GS would have been a 4. The 3G wasn't even the third iPhone. It was the second one. Use your melons people.

Also, the numbering started with 3G to 3GS, 4 to 4S, next should be 5 to 5S, etc.

It's not that complicated.

This makes the most sense, and is what I have been thinking all along.

Larger screen would be nice as long as it does not make the actual phone bigger like these Android mini tablets.

After reading all the bickering, it seems like the best feature of the new iPhone will be finally knowing its name.

I've referred to my 3GS as an "iPhone 3" before, because it was the 3rd iPhone. The forth was called the iPhone 4. The fifth iPhone just came out. Calling the sixth iPhone a "5" seems silly to me.

How about reverting back to the simplicity of just iPhone ? Does it even need a suffix to distinguish it from other generations?

Does the Macbook Pro? The Air? iPod Touch? Nano? iMac?

If you look at the latest iPhone as model 4b (its the same design as the iPhone 4 with upgraded specs) why should the next number in the sequence be 6. If Apple released another intermediate 4c with a few spec changes next month would you then expect the next phone to be iPhone 7?

There's arguments for either way but I think leaping from 4s to 6 seems illogical.

It was called 3G because it supported 3G, then it was an iPhone 4, because it was the fourth iPhone. Now it is 4S, because it was just small upgrade so the following iPhone should be iPhone 6.

Apples next iPhone will be called the iPhone 5, so why would we call the iPhone 4S the iPhone 5? Who cares if it's the 5th phone out, it's still a 4 series phone. Ya know like the iPhone 3G and the 3GS are series 3 they look alike, alot alike. The iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S is the 4 series. iPhone 5 will be a whole new phone and redesign. I know your iPhone 4S looks just like the iPhone 4, but don't kid yourself into thinking it's the iPhone 5 because the iPhone 5 will be bounds and leaps better than your 4 I mean 4S, same difference.

FYI. iPhone 2007 and iPhone 3G were almost identical. Both had 624 MHz processor (down clocked to 400 MHz) 2 mp camera, 128mb ram. 3.5 inch screen 320x480 resolution.

The only difference was 3 G chip and Gps chip which apple purposely left out in the 2007 model. Because the iPhone 2007 was in essence a test product for Apple.

The only thing apple really changed was the way it was sold. In 2008 Apple changed course and forced carriers to subsided the cost of the iPhone.

Before you had to pay full price for the phone and also lose your corporate discount. (at least in the USA)

While it's hard to predict which new features will make it into iPhone 5 it is quite clear that the phone will fall even farther behind the competition from Android camp.

I think the next time they release an iphone will be the perfect time for apple to move to TWO form factors at one time, just as they eventually did with the iPod:

One might be the same screen size/form factor as the current iphone.

Another could well be 4.3" to 4.5".

There clearly is a large market for both form factors. Why not give each group the phone they want most. I have the 4S and would have LOVED a 4.5" screen, as so many others have said. But it's also true that many will still prefer the size and shape of the current iphone (many posts show preference there as well). They'll be shipping over 100 mil phones a year. I think they can afford two sizes.

As for names, IMO there are good reasons for each of iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and LTE

5 keeps the trend 3G, 3GS, 4S, 5 etc (legit argument)
6 makes sense in that it WOULD be the sixth phone and could be perceived as a bigger event (the 6 could have little more marketing punch)
and of course, LTE says it all.

If there ARE two form factors shipping next year, I'd like
- iPhone LTE for the the current form factor
- iPhone XL for the larger form factor (which WOULD have LTE as well)

In addition to what others have said, I'd like to see NFC, and wireless charging

I doubt seriously if apple does a 4.5 inch type of display on the iPhone 5. I bet it's more like 4inches. It's more their style. Apple always do what you least expect. Everyone expecting this big screen. Might just be a 4 incher. Which would be a big improvement over the 3.5 incher.

slight bigger screen
faster processor
new slimmer design
-POSSIBLE added ram (doubtful).

Thats about it.

I know, crappy upgrade. Bothers me this is the time i decided to join att. Nothing that special except siri. but once that gets on the 4 boom, nothing.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I think the iPhone 5 will have at least a 4.3 inch display, the 3.5 is just too small these days. It will have 4G, it is needed. Also the design needs to change for the next generation but the thickness is just fine. I have had the iPhone 4 since January and will not be upgrading to the 4S but will most likely be upgrading to the 5.

I know that, but their numbering started at 3G to 3GS. Then iPhone 4 (see the increase of the next number?) to the iPhone 4S. See the pattern?

Well, yeah, but it was called 4 after the 3GS because it was the fourth phone, so we don't know how will the following phone be called, because there wasn't the same situation in the past.

next iphone will likely be called iphone 4g, lol, and the one after that will be called iphone 4gs, the next one would be iphone 5g, if there is a 5th generation communication protocol out.

riddle me this...how can the sixth iphone be the iphone 5?

in that case iphone 4 is the iphone 3 if we are talking about model redesign....

Simplify it for ya. on the left side you have the iPhone 3g and iPhone 3GS. Both are the 3

on the right you have iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S both are the 4.....

The iPhone 5 will be called the iPhone 5 and eventually we have the iPhone 5S and both phones will have the 5. The iPhone 5S will be the 7th phone out by then, but guess what it's an iPhone 5S. So why don't they call it the iPhone 7 then? Well because they need to work on the iPhone 6 first.
