C'mon people you're not getting married to the phone right ? It's just a phone.. My opinion is that people are becoming slaves of items.. I mean it ain't that cheap but still not worth the worries will it scratch.. but what if it drops.. And cases ? You buy this lovely looking phone and u stick it in a plastic/rubber awful looking case that you spend the next year keeping it "Safe" just to find out that the dust and debris between the two surfaces have done more damage.
Of course this is just my opinion and I don't mean to insult anyone in anyway.

Cheers!

P.S still waiting till the 28-th to get that freaking phone :apple::apple::apple::D

...and todays moral, don't let two year old engineers with keys, no matter how adorable, near your iPhone, and things that are harder than other things tend to damage the things of which they are harder. I would not expect an aluminum back to be scratch resistant at all. I like the glass back myself, but I'm covering my new iPhone's back to prevent this obvious issue. At least MJ did more of a real world test than the standard run of the mill fanboys do when testing hardiness. This could definitely happen to anybody and even without the mini engineer, this damage would be seen in a pocket with keys. Here's the point, protect your 400 dollar+ investment.

not enough glass iphones were broken, so they all looked new when reselling them, so the value was maintained high.

now!, since it is easily scratched & scathed, value loss occurs in the first few days.

or, get a case, which in my case, distasteful.

edit--

can MJ stop falling asleep when talking to the camera? wtf to that

Who cares?

Metal is more durable for drops, glass is better against "scuffing". Either way, Apple can not win.

BTW, who cares? This is something that is used daily...it will show use.
I don't remember these type of scuff/drop videos pre-iphone.

I think a large number of the complainers here are worried like I am about resale value. I've made the mistake plenty of times of putting my iphone 4 in the same pocket as my keys and in 2 years still looks like new with just using the bumper case with the exposed back. My 5 treated the same will look like crap and would take an automatic 25% cut on resale.

I'm thankful for the return of aluminum, reminiscent of the good ol' original iPhone. I'm usually pretty careful with my devices, but I had the original iPhone back in college and it got dropped, scratched, scuffed, etc but still looked ok and definitely still worked. Then, as a mature adult, I drop my iPhone 4 (once!) and the thing was completely shattered. I'll take a few scuffs here and there on my new black iPhone 5, and I agree with the few people that think it might actually make it look MORE durable after a while.

Uhm. You know the state New Mexico, the one that's also in America? Am I being hit on?

lol maybe

Are you serious dude? You are from US and you don't know where New Mexico is? that's a shocker.

I think you are indeed but it is not going very well. Lol.

In other other news I thought it was pretty much standard (for guys at least) to have the iPhone in one pocket and all your other crap in the other pocket.

Just to clarify I said mostly guys since I've seen most women just throwing it in anywhere in purses, backpacks and different pockets with all sorts of stuff next to it, I must also add that they tend to have it always wrapped with a cover.

Have u seen those ones with the huge rabbit ears? WTF

Anyway, yeah aluminum scratches when another metal object is applied to it. Who would have thought?

i know where its at ok kefek ya abu arab ?

I'm getting the black one and taking a Brillo pad to it as soon as I get home... Taking a video of it, and then drop the link in here... I'm gonna make mine cool with an aged and worn look...

Was thinking of doing the same thing. If my band gets one nic in it, I'm going to buff it all off and brillow up the raw aluminum. There was actually a early concept pic with a natural aluminum band on a black phone. Looked really nice.

OMG - you abuse it and it gets scratches

I dont' understand everyone's concern - you actually abuse the iPhone and it shows it????? I'm sure if you abuse one of the Android or MS based phones that won't happen!!!! (sarcasm) Take a set of keys to anything (try the surface of your car) and you will see some damage.

wheres that at ? im from usa :)

Get a room.

The pure Blind denial from some fanboys is sickening.

Lets face it. Apple f'ed up on the materials for this one, its there for all to see, yet they continue to believe its 'What will happen anyway'.

No, if i purchase a £500-£700 piece of hardware, i want it to look pristine out of the box, then after time, yes it may get a few dings and scratches, but nothing to the extent that they are coming right out of the box.

Don't get me wrong i have had iPhones since their launch in 2007, and will continue, but i'm just pointing out the truth.

I have too. And the first iPhone had the best material on the back.

You contradicted yourself there, buddy.

If u don't wanna have it caseless or not have a big case on it just put on one of those stickes to shield the back from scratches and that's it! I might get a black one so it won't be noticeable but I don't know yet

I don't know what to say except tell the story of iPhones backs
Plastic back: cracks easily
Glass back: shatters easily
Metal back: scratches & dings easily
So what can apple do? I prefer my back to get scratch if it can survive a fall better. Most days I have some type of cover on my phone, but the times I'm going naked I would prefer it o be resistant to shatter and take some scratches.

She kept calling it destroyed, it's just scratched... In general use I wouldn't even think it would scratch very much, especially compared the the old iPod backs. Who rubs keys against their phones? Also she seemed surprised that it didn't scratch the glass as much, glass is very hard to scratch.
