iPhone 5 Reservation at Apple Store

frustrated to the max
I am going to try again tonight to reserve an iPhone 5. I have been trying almost every night for the past few weeks with no luck. I have already sold my iPhone 4 and have to ship it out tomorrow. If I cannot reserve a 5 tonight I will be using a ghetto flip phone until I can get a 5. I need all good vibes sent my way tonight! Any tips would be appreciated. Is it better to try on the computer or on the Apple store app? Is it better to already have the item in my cart or not? thanks

Definitely better to have the item in your cart and ready to go a few minutes before 10. You may also want to try checking local AT&T in-store stock online and Best Buy in-store stock online for your desired color and capacity. Good luck!!!
I have VZW .. Probably should have stated that in the original post. VZW seems to be the hardest one to find. I have checked best buy with no luck and am on a waiting list at radio shack.
I've been following this thread for a week or so and just wanted to let everyone know that I was finally able to reserve a 32GB Black AT&T iPhone 5 at the Upper West Side Apple Store in NYC. 
I started trying on last Friday, I gave up on Sunday night because of Hurricane Sandy, and then starting trying again tonight. So it was about 4 nights of trying before I finally got one. It showed up around 10:02.
To echo everyone's else advice, make sure you have your phone in your cart and you turned on Express Pay 20 minutes or so before you start checking.
Now I just hope mine doesn't have any dings or scratches...

I did it via the Apple Store app, right at 10pm local time. It is quicker for me to do it that way when checking the stock, just have your iPhone already in your cart and speed through the whole process.
After I go through all the AT&T checks, it seems like I would purchase it before picking it up at the store. How do I add it to my cart without actually buying it? Thank you.
You cant.
You have to pay for it to reserve it.
And then you just go there and pick it up. Your card will be charged.
I don't want to make the mistake of buying it and then waiting 3-4 weeks for shipping. If I buy it first, how do I make sure it's in stock at my local Apple store?
If you're doing it via the app, just add it to your cart but dont check out. The option to pick up the item will be under "Ship to Me" or you can scroll down and select "pick up store". With this way, you can check the stock every night at 10pm with no problem.
You're supposed to put your zip and search for local pick up if any available near you.
Not order it through the mail.

I actually lucked out a few minutes after 10. Only my second night, had everything filled out online and clicked in exactly at 10, nothing. On a whim I waited 5 minutes, hit it again, and a couple phones were suddenly available. I guess they can be late updating the stock, lucky for me.
Omg the first time I tried this tonight as my upgrade date is today and I got one!!! 16 gig slate!
Was able to score a 64GB white AT&T at my local AT&T store this evening. A fellow MacRumors member mentioned trying the online stock checker on their website. It worked! So, if you aren't having any luck with Apple, this is an option. (At least for AT&T.)

Congratulations!!! Looks like you lucked out, getting the phone right when you needed it! Here's hoping for your pending pickup email followed by a totally uneventful pick up at the store...

Do you need to be a ATT/Verizon/Sprint customer to use the online reservation system? I want to buy the ATT or Verizon version to use it with my GSM carrier in Peru. A friend of mine is coming from Los Angeles next week and I want to ask her to bring me one but I have to make the purchase online.
Could you please help me?

Yes, you need to be either an AT&T or Verizon customer.
Dont get a Sprint i5. It will not be unlocked.
