Yes, I had success in the Chicago suburbs. Went on at 10, picked my phone, the store I wanted to go to had it - done. I picked it up the next day around 6:30 and went to at&t for an upgrade swap. Lots of people were up in arms there (employees and customers) hearing how I got the phone. So many people stuck waiting another week or 2. I kinda felt bad!

well, that was the dealbreaker, I'm not gonna try it then. Good thing I checked this thread as I was just about to head out to an apple store lolz.

I guess it's gonna be another late night for me tonight.

Me too, am ready for the late party but unlike last night am willing to drive all the way to Miami (200+ miles) or even planet Pluto :p this weekend so I could finally have 1.

Was anyone in Miami able to reserve a phone last night?

Saw some stocks in Miami last night, too far for me, but tonight am gonna take if that's the closest one I'll see for the exact model I need.

Going to check tonight, and shoot for 10PM. Didn't see anything last night.

I don't know if there's a pattern, Orlando got some, and Tampa & Miami nothing on first night. Then Miami got some last night and Orlando & Tampa got nothing. Tonight is probably the night for Tampa (or ton of other Apple Stores between these cities that did not get shipment first 2 nights). That will work nicely for the closest Apple Store near my place. :p

Or maybe I'll just try that formula of keep trying from after 10 pm est - 11 pm est. Did that for an hour after 1 am est thru almost 2 am est (the web site was agonizingly crawling on this time) but I saw nothing across the states of FL and GA. ;)

I'm in the Palm Beach, FL area, and I tried to buy one from the apple store website, and from my iPhone from 9:55PM 'till 1:35AM but no luck there, all it said was "Pickup Unavailable" in every store, and after checking different zip codes across the country, they all showed up the same way.
After chatting online with an apple call center rep, they said the "Pick Unavailable" just stands for Out of Stock, and he kept saying you should try a few time a week after 10PM and you may find one.

Today I drove up to an Apple store near my house, and they just said that I have to go online and reserve the phone there, because they are out of phones.

So, I'll see you all online back again tonight at 10PM ET

How is that some buyers see phones in stock in Miami, when I spent 3 hours updating my devices trying to get a single one anywhere in the state, and nothing showed it, not even the "Out of Stock" phrase... right?

Did anyone get one from the S.F. Bay Area last night. I didn't see anything available from 10:14 to 10:24.

I saw a 32GB Black AT&T at the Berkeley store almost exactly at 10pm. It was way too far for me as I am in Seattle. The locate button automatically pulls that many stores from up here.

Well last night a little before 10pm there were some at The Falls and in Ft. Lauderdale. I tried to reserve the one at The Falls but when I checked out it was unavailable again. So I'm going to try again before 10pm.

How does the reservation system work? Do you have to complete the order process first before they show you a list of stores with stock?

Right as soon as you're about to check out there's a "pick up in store" option that lets you find a store with any in stock. You pick the store there then you complete payment.

I was at the Apple Store this morning and was told that in the US they will be allowing Personal Pickups for the iPhone 5 starting at 10pm tonight. Apparently you can buy it online, they will show which stores have inventory, and you pick it up the next day.

Longtime (relatively speaking) iPhone user switched to Samsung GS3 last night... loving it. I can't see waiting until October 22nd for my phone to be shipped from Verizon... its a phone! Much as I love the Apple ecosystem (many Apple users don't), the Galaxy III is every bit as good a phone, but with a bigger screen and NO WAITING!

Yes, you go through everything but paying, and then you have the option for shipping, or pick a store.

Last night, shortly after 10pm and my store did not have it. Went back to tv show and did not close it out. Turns out, if I had looked at all the options, another store about 12 miles away had it. gone by then of course.

Pretty much. It should be before you have to enter any payment information though. Towards the end of checking out, you have an option to either Ship or Pick up. The Pick up option has a blue hyperlink letting you enter your ZIP and see a list the nearest ~20 stores.

I've been querying a 32GB Black/Slate around 10pm with no luck here in the Atlanta area.

I have tried the past few evenings in my area and there has not been any Apple store listed in 3 states(NYC, NJ, Philadelphia) with 32g black available for reservation. This is with checking at 10pm.

Anyone else with similar experiences?

I was checking last night from 10 to ~10:15. The NYC 14th street store showed instock for 32GB AT&T in both black and white. I was a bit surprised they were still "instock" 15 minutes later.

and also no iOS. I used the S3 for 3 months. Definitely a cool phone but they can't take place of the other. Not for me at least.

Does it irk you that when you push the home button on the GS3, that there is like a 1-2 second lag before it goes to the home screen? I played around with one in a store and it drove me CRAZY.

I was able to get one from the Georgetown apple store the first night they started taking pre-orders, black 32 AT&T. I was all set up within 10 minutes of entering the store. My iPhone did have the nicks and scratches out of the box that some others have discussed, so I am currently debating asking for a refund/switching to white.

I want to buy a device only 64GB AT&T in Black in NYC. But it looks like you can't order device only through the website or Apple app.

Actually there is no delay at all, even when switching back to IE and web browsing. Hey, I'm as shocked as anyone that Android Ice Cream Sandwich could be this good. Never been an Android fan, still am not, but the Galaxy is well thought out and competes well against the iPhone 5. I'm very happy I "crossed the street" on this one. Still love Macs and OS X though!!!

Yeah same here, I want device only, which can only be done for walkins if the store happens to have stock not reserved. I'm in no rush. If I happen to be by the Apple store and they happen to have it, then I'll buy one.

Every bit as good? Not in my opinion. No AirPlay, no Apple Store support, terrible track record for OS updates, plastic, way too large to operate comfortably with one hand, 2nd rate app store.

I personally wouldn't buy Samsung just because they KIRF everyone else's products. Always have--They did it to Sony and RIM in the past too. I'd rather give my money to a company that makes new things, not copies others.

But this opinion shouldn't surprise you in a forum called "MacRumors". To each his own. Enjoy your phone.

I don't give a rat's what phone someone else uses/prefers - let's get back to the matter at hand. I struck out last night, but I have a good feeling about tonight. :)

I wonder how long it will be until the stores have some walk-in stock. A month seems like a long estimate, no? I remember the 4S being sooner than that, but that could be wishful remembering. I am on the fence about just ordering it online, but I think I can get one sooner through the reservation method. Or maybe walking in at some point. Apple Store still says 3-4 weeks for shipping.

I tried milo.com today, and it didn't work for me. It showed the 5 being in stock at best buy and radio shack, but it wasn't actually in either of them when I called. I called the local Apple store and asked what kind of shipment they got in last night, since I've tried for the past two nights with no luck, and she didn't know exact numbers, but she did say that their shipment was very "sparse." Seeing as how Apple is getting ready to go international with their release, I don't see this situation improving.
I'd never go Samsung, but if the HTC 8X were available right now, I'd be really tempted.

So I reserved a 16gb white ATT phone at a Chicago area apple store a couple days ago. I didn't see anything in the pick up email on how long they would hold it. When I called the store they told me I only had a day but then when I checked my order online it gave me about 2 weeks to pick it up.

Anyway I went to get it today and asked if they would cancel the order and let me pay the full price for it so I wouldn't have to renew my contract with ATT. They said if I canceled the order I would have to wait around in the store for a couple hours while they wait for the notice that I canceled the order and I may or may not be able to then get the phone.

They then decided that I could buy the phone, return it, and then they let me buy the phone with the no commitment price device only. When I got home I was able to plug the phone into iTunes and it gave me the congratulations your iPhone is unlocked. The only downside was since they processed the first order it killed the sim in my old phone and I had to call ATT to move over to the new sim.

Hoping for better luck tonight. Figure it has been about a week since their last moderate shipment Saturday.
