Today I went to pick up my i5 at westchester mall apple store. Ask the guy nicely that I do not want to keep the new line and rather pay full price.
He went to talk to the senior Genius, i guess, and it seemed that this is a rather common occurrences recently. He agreed to it and told my Genius to finish the pick-up sale, then do a return, and resale as device only.
Now when he was about to do it, another senior guy came over and said no it can't be done because 1) it will messed up the pick-up inventory for next day and he had to personally see to it 2) this is circumventing the pick-up procedure. But he went to ask how many times has this been done today and I told him I am actually the first in the store so probably the first, and he reluctantly agreed to it.
.......
BUTTTTTTTTTT, somehow it seems that APPLE/AT&T has modified the system in such a way that once apple ring up the pick-up confirmation, they cannot do a return on the device....
so i guess long story short, the system seemed to have changed, and even if the Genius agree to do a cancel/rebuy maneuver, the system wouldn't allow it...end up having to go to AT&T at the end of this month to cancel the contract...
.....or maybe try again tomorrow. i read somewhere that you have to bring back the second day for this to work....

I was able to place an order on the app this morning for store pickup but the pickup date is for Nov 4th which would be the 3-4 week delivery for regular ship order. I'm thinking I will still try to order tonight at 10pm and then cancel this order if I succeed. I'm curious though if shipments come in tonight for the reservation if one of these will be held since my order has already been placed for pickup. Has anybody else encountered this scenario?
By talking to the Genius who helped me, it seems that they have stock in everyday, but about 10-20 phones go out to the queue that is formed outside the store (each person will have a ticket) leaving nothing or rarely few for walk-ins.
