Sorry but clearly NONE of you get it.

The iPhone is the iPhone.

It does NOT need to be smaller. Not for any reason whatsoever.

What universe could a $400 unsub / $49 sub iPhone Nano with 3GS screen and internals and a new casing exist in?

The thing will still cost $100 a month to own. Sorry, that doesn't enter into the cheap phone market. The product would flounder, and would end up a loss for Apple as they could have accomplished the same thing by producing more of the current 3GS and keeping the $49 price, rather than redesigning an old product for no reason.

-

The only thing Apple COULD do, and MIGHT do, is release an entirely new phone for the NON-iPHONE MARKET.. based on the current iPod Nano, that is about 3 times the size, multitouch, basic, no data, just calls and txt, and make it CHEAP

Other than that ^ there is no iPhone Nano, and never will be.

A lot of people only pay $65 / month (incl myself.) which includes unlimited data. Not really that expensive considering. It would also be even cheaper if I dropped my text messaging plan but people still insist on sending them

I would love to see a rubberized back to any of the designs we've seen as mock ups or finalized.

You think Apple is going to go from premium glass to "rubberized"? I hope you are joking. Rubberized phones look cheap and are a thing of the past. Is design sense really lacking this much among iPhone users? This scares me a bit.

Then iPod shuffle really isn't an iPod. Apple could very well differentiate the line with Android selling well. There would be almost no competition if Apple had cheaper iPhone's. The same thing that happened with the iPod would happen with phones. Total domination (I don't think they'd dominate the cell market as much though).

haha wow...I like the Apple but the above statement is just insane.

Here's a crazy idea that I have yet to see posted. With all the arguing about home button or no home button and making room for the bigger screen, no one had considered that the home button could easily be moved to the side. Would then be thumb accessible for voice commands and easily clickable for any other need. Would be easier to press when in a holder like a car mount by squeezing the two sides rather than pushing on the front.

2 things are wrong about the mock. Firstly, the screen will not go to the edge because the Apple bumper would cover a portion of the phone. Not going to happen. Secondly, antennagate. The black line will not stay on the bottom of the volume side.

There is no way the iPhone 5 won't have a bezel; that would look too awkward, like someone who shaved their eyebrows.

Frankly, the top and bottom edges of the iPhone 4 are so extended that it's distracting, so I could see Apple trimming those ends a bit, but I doubt it if they're going with LTE. The tech inside has to be quite small by then, and I doubt Apple will shrink the battery unless they have parts that are correspondingly more efficient.

And why would you think that the bumpers sold for the present generation would be the same sold for the next generation? Perhaps it won't be able to use bumpers at all because it will be tapered. Who knows. WHY are people here so adamant that Apple couldn't possibly change design because of cases and bumpers? It never phased Apple before and never will. Get real.

I was checking out these comments, and I couldnt resist getting up and messing about in Photoshop myself (even though.. its 4:34AM lol)

Here is my version (a home buttonless, 4.3" screen powerhouse)

Click for full size (1700x1790)

PS: I didnt bother making the volume and mute buttons, I need sleep xD
PPS: [Download the PSD] - If you want to mess about on your own :D

That is the best mockup...hands down. I want THAT phone. I can see Applee doing this.

Oh? How 'bout this one?

That's fanart?

Seems a step back BUT quite attractive. Home button looks ghetto though.

Yeah.

Agreed. The chubby nature of your finger tips will always creep around the edges and inadvertently make contact with the screen.

Wow, I never thought of it that way.

iphone 5 and mini look absolutely hideous! whoever did these mockups has no taste or design aesthetic whatsoever.

iPhone0.5

Apple could aim for a slimmer design and basic functionalities of a phone.. half as wide as the iPhone4, vertical scrolling, limited surfing experience, focus on voice and speech, new mobileme..

for true surfing, the iPhone0.5 acts as a 4G modem for your MacBook..

At 99$, the most affordable iPhone experience ever!

I love how everyone entirely bypasses my last post, taking bits of it here and there and creating a post of their own. My post was by far the most speculative of the bunch, drawing connections and pulling from past rumors on the site, and I find it hard to believe that no one has quoted it to voice their opinions on what I said.

This might be a surprise to you but I think some people probably post a comment without eagerly searching for your definitive opinion on the matter. I know, crazy right!!! It is almost like you aren't the reason people visit macrumors, oh wait, you aren't. Get a life and stop obsessing over every thread. If you need friends, try chatroullette.com.

WOW the edge to edge mockups look simply gorgeous!
Now when i see the ipohne 4 i see this ugly thick bezel on the sides...
edge to edge makes it look so much more sexy, splitting the phone into three parts instead of a screen inside a bezel.

a 3.5" mini iPhone5 would be absolutely perfect for my needs...i always loved the size of the display but the phone itself is on the large side. I do hope it'll come with 8 GB flash, and in white

May as well consider the ridiculous...

And justice has been served. Now, I shall go back into hiding until the next iteration of the iPhone is announced :)

If iPhone 5 comes with edge-to-edge, iPhone 4 rules for another year.

I don't know what "rules" means here. But yes, edge-to-edge means your phone-holding hands' fingers will accidentally touch the screen; which won't be acceptable. This is like the people who wanted no bezel on the iPad - it doesn't make sense. The bezel is there for a reason.

I think people are dreaming up all these extremely-thin designs. Let's be real, guys.
