I was checking out these comments, and I couldnt resist getting up and messing about in Photoshop myself (even though.. its 4:34AM lol)

Here is my version (a home buttonless, 4.3" screen powerhouse)

Click for full size (1700x1790)

PS: I didnt bother making the volume and mute buttons, I need sleep xD
PPS: [Download the PSD] - If you want to mess about on your own :D

I actually like this. And sleep is overrated.

here's my rendition...

iphone5

I don't think iphone app resolution would have to change. I think developers can keep making apps the same res, but the added screen would allow for a smoother less-obtrusive notification system, even while your playing games.
:)

i also kind of agree with iMattcotv's design that if they go more to the edge that the curve of the outside bezel would become more square

If you add pixels at top/bottom, an app developer doesn't *have* to use them, but he could if he wanted to. That's the sort of thing various companies have done for years.

iPhone 5 Mini? Nope...think Nano.

Rumors of a smaller iPhone 5? Half the price? Not while running iOS. The vast majority of the cell phone market is dumbphones, therefore expect something similar to the iPod nano. Slick interface, still plays your tunes, texts, maybe even email, and some simple apps...put no playing Call of Duty.

Way cheaper, slick, opens up to a new huge market...money in the bank.

Seeing how everyone is so critical around here, lol, I decided to spend a few more minutes in photoshop making the 4" iPhone a little nicer looking and.. well.. I went Aluminum on it...

I think the side view still needs work...

I know this doesn't prove anything, but that is a 4 inch screen on there in a device smaller than the current iPhone! :) I believe it's possible. :D

I don't know how I feel about a edge to edge screen. It looks odd to me. Well atleast those renders do.

My favorite so far.

Honestly you lot are wasting your time.

There is no way in a million years apple will remove the bezel and have an edge to edge screen or remove the Home button.

The problem with removing the Home button will be accessibility. How is VoiceOver going to be activated? Tactile feedback is required for people with visual impairments. It's clear Apple have put a lot of effort into making their iPhone accessible, I can't see them undoing all their hard work.

Secondly have you guys stopped to think that it may not be physically possible to have a edge to edge screen. One poster has already made the comment that the LCD screens already have a bezel. Apple would have to use some form of flexible display and I can't see that happening.

Also ergonomics would be a major issue if Apple did go with the edge to edge concept as where will you rest your fingers, what about accidental contact etc?

Sure these mockups look sexy but that's all they are.

Apple have barely changed the form factor since the original iPhone. They must think it's near perfect, so I can't see them changing it radically.

I do think there might be room to remove some of the top and bottom bezel though.

Ok, this is quite a long post but please bare with me and read through it :D

I genuinely cant even begin to understand why so many people are showing there love for the last design.

It looks hideous to me; It just looks like a same old design HTC or Samsung smart phone P.O.S

As for edge for edge screens..... are you serious; how would you hold such a device without accidentally touching the screen?

Getting rid of the home button? if they did that id be getting rid of my iphone; somehow a hardware button where you can; with a quick press + reassuring click, close a program seems infinitely better then a long press on the screen or a swipe to the left, sure this is fine for a ipod nano with no real apps, but think about it your on a website on safari how many times could you accidentally close the page or something.

What id like to see, is a full aluminium body similar to that of the current iPads A tougher, laminated screen to help prevent cracking; and weather sealing! If motorola can make a splash proof phone why cant apple! Think how many callbacks and repairs this would save from people who have got water damage to there iPhones.

The camera on the iPhone 4 needs to be seriously improved in the iPhone 5; while it is a step up from the original iphones i will agree it is appalling; it constantly overexposes and in anything darker then a bright sunny day you get grainy photos with blown out highlights and clipping in the shadows Wether it be software or hardware that needs improving, it needs to be done.

The ear piece needs improving, after 4 years you'd expect them to have improved the earpiece design, so that you don't have to use precision skill to align it with your ear to be able to hear it at full clarity, there are things called surface speakers which would be ideal for this! they work by using the surface they are stuck to to crease the sound, using the front glass of the ihpone they would be able to make the whole surface of the phone able to emit sound, without having to have a small earpiece speaker blasting which would make phone calls more discrete yet infinitely more hearable

This speaker could be used for the loud speaker as well which would allow the phone to give out much louder, clearer audio.

Home button?

People.. what's up with the fugly homebuttons?

iOS 5 will disappear the homebutton thanks to swipe movements. Re-photoshop the picture without home button and make it full screen (almost like HTC Desire HD2)

Please explain how you can be the authority on Apple and say that they WILL remove the Home button?

The resting our fingers issue i don't think is a problem just grip the sides.

My prediction is if they do expand the screen size it will be adding more pixels top and bottom, this would allow better widescreen viewing and would also make room for a unobtrusive notification system.

I dont think they will remove the home button. But wouldn't it be sweet if they incorporated the macbook trackpad technology on the bottom part of the iphone and made the whole phone bottom click, essentially getting rid of the botton :) I personally like the home button as is.

I personally think that it would be too fragile to have an edge to edge screen and also think that it could be a problem for people, especially people with big fingers.

I do agree however there is room to make the screen taller, I guess the problem with that is the required change in
aspect ratio and therefore screen resolution. This would require Apps to be rewritten to make full use of the screen.

I disagree. Show me how you swipe home using one hand. I'd like to see you multi-touch with just your thumb.

I love this design, I could imagine myself enjoying an intense racing game or FPS game on that gorgeous device!!

I'd Photoshop something up that I became motivated by this, maybe later..

I was thinking of a similar design, but with a slim silver rim that is the shape of a Popsicle stick, and the Device it's self is shaped like a very thin Dell streak-like, a tiny bit more aluminum bezel around the screen would compliment it more I think.

I'm writing messy because I'm on my iPhone, don't worry about it lol

I think the earpiece just needs to be wider.

Your idea about using the iphone surface as a speaker is an interesting idea, but I can imagine there would be allot of complications to consider before making the whole surface emit sound. Does it affect the signal or disrupt wifi or bluetooth? What about the internal components how would it affect them? How well would the touch technology work while the sound is being emitted?

I agree. If Apple ever decide to use multi-touch gestures for accessing Home then they will only ever argument the physical button.

Imagine this:

Apple can very easily make a small proximator, or a small thin touchscreen light (a white LED 3 pixel width x maybe 20% the width of the iPhone centered in the bottom bezel) between the bottom bezel, where if swiped certain ways, would activate different things (swipe up brings the app switcher, down would close an app, hold would activate voice control, swipe left or right to toggle apps (like what apple was showing in iPad 4.3))

This little idea could also act as a regular home button, you just wouldn't feel the home button press, but instead just touch or swipe it.

As far as i am aware it doesn't affect any of the other things, Heres a link to a similar device

Im sure they could implement it on a smaller scale under the top and bottom black bars above and below the screen to get dual channel audio :D
