Indeed. Case/screen protector manufacturers have historically been our best source of new design information, time and time again. I'd put a lot of stock in this rumor with the only possibility of it being fake is Apple purposefully leaking false designs, which seems like quite an effort given all that we've seen.

Why would a company leak false designs to build up speculation regarding a product redesign only to deliver a minor spec-bump refresh of an existing product.

Get your customers and the market excited for something new and then deliver nothing? That's an incredibly dumb way to do business.

And another contradictory rumor to throw unto the pile. No seriously at this point it's just ridiculous. There isn't even a shred of logic anymore, it's just a bunch of guesses.

I think we should just chill on all these leaks, all it does is build hype and eventually will generate disappointment.

Laughs, KnightWRX, you have our permission to "chill" whenever you like. I know where your coming from. When I was anticipating a product I watched MacRumors like a hawk and it was torture due to all the rumors. What Im saying is, don't do it to yourself. :p

The rumors don't bother me because I'm not bitting my nails for the iPhone 5. Im still using my 3G!

OK imagine your at the gym, you have your iPhone in an armband case, and you want to skip to the next track.
Today I have to:
1) Swipe the phone on.
2) Possibly enter my code.

Stopping you right there. Today you have to :

1) double click home button.
2) change track.

I'm not new here, it just seems to me a lot of the coverage on the Front Page about the iPhone 5 would have been Page 2 material before.

I never implied they'd do it that way if that's what you are inferring. They could put out a very slightly modified version of what they intend to produce to ferret out leaks. Market wouldn't have unrealistic expectations then.

Maybe Apple purposely leaked these to throw everybody off?

It seems like most rumors centered around the same handset, but with bumped up specs. If you look at the iPhone cycle, its usually new hardware, next year is a spec bump. New hardware gets introduced after 2 cycles. So my guess is same hardware design, bumped up specs and the major re-design will come in mid to late 2012.

another assumption here.

Tomorrow (with the iPhone 5:
1) Feel around for my elongated home button
2) Press the right side of the button.

I really hope it's regular button with a see-saw action.

All you gotta do is do a double-click of the home button (while your phone is locked) and the iPod controls will come up on the screen.

I don't think we're going to see an elongated home button. It wouldn't accomplish anything.

Some have suggested that there will be more buttons in that space. Maybe, but historically, Apple has tried to keep the front-face as minimal as possible. I'm actually surprised the home button is on the front at all, since all other physical buttons/switches are on the side.

Personally, I think something new, other than buttons, is going to be appearing alongside the home button. Something that wouldn't work right if covered.

My guess is that the microphones are moving. I think there will be two mics - one on either side of the home button. They will work to assist in noise canceling during phone calls and will provide some degree of stereo separation when recording video.

This is, of course, purely speculation, but it makes the most sense to me.

You must not have used iOS5 and the ability to swipe left/right with 4 or 5 fingers in order to switch between apps? I can see that being the main function of the elongated home button. It could still be pressable, but also function like the magic mouse on left/right gesters.

Again, why would Apple knowingly tease a full product redesign only to follow up with a minor spec bump? That's just setting yourself up for criticism that the product doesn't live up to expectations -- something that's OK if it's just fans paying attention, but Wall Street looks at stuff like this as well. It's one thing to leak false design, but that only works if the design you end up using is as good or better as what people were expecting. If you tease a design and end up doing nothing, it really underlines your failure to evolve the product.

Plus, why would you want to screw with the accessory makers, who help contribute to the robust ecosystem of iPhone / iPod products? Having shelf spaces filled with iDevice junk is a good thing for Apple (unless you think Apple dislikes having their stores filled with stuff to sell consumers as they walk out the door with their new iPhones or iPads).

Does anyone care to explain to me the draw of the elongated home button? Just looks ugly to me.
Don't assume that there will be an elongated home button.

All we know now is that screen-protectors will have an elongated cut-out. All talk about what will be in that position (including my post) is speculation and nothing else.

This is it thrown trough a rough translator,

Received the protector of this, many people naturally think of the iPhone 5 is used, even Unwire. Hk sources said, is really a great opportunity for Citie on iPhone 5. But then again, I believe that rumors of the use of larger screen Citie used to add 3G connectivity and thinner body of the iPod Touch fifth generation, is not surprising. Is this "mystery of the paste" is used in iPhone 5 or fifth-generation iPod Touch? Apple press conference on the left to be released again when the bar!

Ah yes, Mystery of the Paste...what a great novel. I just can't recall, was that Agatha Christie, or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?

woa i wish that iphone 5 would look like this

ipad 2 silicone cases were pretty accurate

leaked ipad cases were right on the money. I think that the iphone 5 will be very close to the design leak. As when Apple will release it. They probably read sites like these. They can use it to their advantage and release it on a date no one will expect. I believe Apple plant these "leaked" designs purpose to generate buzz just months before release.

It works. I just got my iphone 4 last year, now it makes me want the iphone 5.

I love the gesture area on the palm pre and always wished apple would copy it. This could be a dream come true. Crossing my fingers on this one.

As for screen size, I don't see any reason why it's not going to be a 4"+. Look at the galaxy S variants. If you ever held one you'd know it doesn't feel much bigger in hand, if at all, than an iPhone 4. In fact I prefer the rounded corners to my iPhone 4. Compared to the 3G/3GS it actually feels smaller. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if apple managed to shrink a 4" device even more. Especially considering the galaxy S is a year and a half old and samsung has already managed to cram a more powerful 4.5" device into a package slimmer than the iPhone 4.

But samsung isn't the slimmer

So that picture of the factory workers doing assembly around the screens with elongated home buttons is most likely real?

I don't like the elongated home button. Then again, I haven't seen the product - so I shouldn't really comment.

I knew some smartass would post that... A small bump at the bottom is 0.6mm thicker. My point has nothing to do with that.

But at the end of the day this is MACrumors, and i aint a smart arse, and your point is pointless if it has nothing to do with that as the Samsung isn't the slimmest. Apple would not put a bump on there phones and think the 4mm slim end make them the slimmest phone on the market. My car bumper is lower than the lowest car but there is a bit where people sit, should we forget that because I want to measure from my bumper? bad design from samsung if you ask me, Apple won that argument.

Christ hanging about on here too long makes me so picky and argumentative for no reason.
