"....despite the growing feeling that Apple may not be releasing such a device and instead releasing only the "iPhone 4S" design that is nearly identical to the iPhone 4"

you're kidding right? The only "evidence" that there is not an iPhone 5 is that the 4S was the only thing in the Apple inventory-- which is dumb because that makes perfect sense. The 4S is not a big deal, not a secret. The iPhone 5 is big enough of a secret it WON't be in the computer!

I don't know why you guys and 9 to 5 mac are so convinced there won't be an iPhone 5.

I think it has more to do with the lack of traditional signals in the supply chain. Normally you can tell a product is coming because of the part orders in the chain and either Apple has secured this product beyond what would normally be possible or it doesn't exist.

There will either be a huge reveal in supply chain security or a massive unwhelming in the marketplace. Either way I expect Cook to take advantage of it.

someone help, i have a bunch of pics that i took comparing my iphone 5 case. when i upload them, it says too much memory was allocated.:mad

You could try uploading them to something like imageshack and then posting the links.

A few things I was thinking about...

Steve Jobs, along with everybody else at Apple, is a huge minimalist. I guarantee you his 3 favorite products are the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Air. Now consider the design of the original iPad. The edges were not curved at all and were sharp, much like the iPhone 4. With the update, it is now "lighter, thinner, and faster." Also, the design is now curved around the edges.

Consider an iPhone 4S. That just doesn't fit. Not lighter, not thinner, just faster. And look at the iPod touch line, all curved edges. I think every Apple fan knows how much Apple likes uniformity, so why would that not apply here?

As with the MacBook Air, I think Apple will basically combine the designs of their other 2 favorite products and use them in the iPhone 5. Curved edges (iPad 2) and slight tear drop (MacBook Air). It is also important to remember a slight tear drop shape because if held in landscape, a slight change will not affect the holding of the phone.

As for there being an iPhone 5 and 4S, all we have is speculation. However, lets use last year's iPod event as an example. At the time, FaceTime was the big thing that Apple wanted to get in the hands of as many consumers as possible. So instead of making the 3rd generation iPod touch the low end model, like they did with the 2nd generation to 3rd generation update, they decided to upgrade every model, even the low end model. This is because they wanted cameras on it to get FaceTime to so many people.

Now if the "Wow factor" this year is the new Assistant in iOS 5 which requires an A5 and 1GB RAM, then why would Apple not do the same thing and upgrade the bottom line iPhone as well? Then this would make for a lower end iPhone 4S which is not limited with what features it can use in iOS 5. (Then all you people who are so in love with the current, flawed, and fragile design can just buy one of those. But lets face it, you will do the same thing that happened last year and fall in love with whatever Apple comes out with, no questions asked.) If Assistant is the "Wow factor" like FaceTime was last year, then they will want to get it to as many people as possible. So they will have to upgrade even the low end model to allow it to support everything like they did last year with the iPod touch.

However, Assistant may not be the wow factor. If it is not, what is?

I think they did tighten security. They learned a HUGE lesson in what happened a year and a half ago. Any company who makes a mistake like that will surely learn its lesson. Also why we have barely any info on what happened at a bar this time 'round ;)

i have an iphone 5 case and i took pictures of it and i want to put them on this forum but i get this error code: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 39898177 bytes) in /home/mrforums/public_html_forums/includes/class_image.php on line 2401

That will do it.

I'm sure you can resize an image since you were able to place it on your computer.

First time poster, but I've been following MR for a long time.

I've been watching these rumors build for a long time. I passed up on the Verizon iPhone (and unlimited data) in Feb to wait for the next iPhone because I didn't want a design that was already 8 months into its life. But I can't help but feel like I'll regret that decision if they don't come out with a fresh design. Some are saying this upgrade will focus more on the guts and software of the phone. That's all fine and great, I'm sure iOS 5 will be great. But if that's the case, have Apple engineers just been sitting on their thumbs for the past year and a half? I can't see them going that long just modifying their current model. That being said, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for two phones next week.

As for all these cases... I'm hoping they're legit, but I have a some superstitions (this is assuming there is no redesign). The iPhone generates a TON of buzz in the international tech community. What generates even more buzz is an unannounced iPhone. Wouldn't it make sense for case manufacturers produce a bunch of these cases and sell them at $15.00 each for a while, cashing in on a phone that doesn't even exist knowing that people will still buy them? I mean, from a business standpoint, they could claim to have "insider information" on the next iPhone's size and shape and sell a ton of these. They could easily recoup the mold and materials cost from the production side; and then when the phone is announced and people realize they've been had, well....they already have your money. :)

And AT&T could be jumping on the train a little early just in case these turn out to be real. If these were popping up at AT&T and Verizon stores all over the country, then I might feel more convinced. But we get a few pictures from an unconfirmed location...I just don't know.

Of course I could be wrong (and I hope I am!). Gotta plan out my work schedule next week so I can catch the keynote. I think I'm coming down with something... *cough* :D

Hey scomora,

Upload it to

tinypic.com

or

imageshack.us

And then paste the link they give you in here. That error msg probably means the file is big. Try to resize the image in mspaint and save it as a jpeg or something.

Actually, what the case companies are banking and betting on is that the iphone 5 is true. This bet could be off, and they will go in a loss if it is. If you produce something in the market with huge demand that no one else has AND youre the first one to do it or one of the first ones with no competition, you'll make tons of money. It's really all about being first.

I personally think it was like this; an inside analyst friend told them hey this is what I think, put some chips/money in this. If it comes out to be true, you'll make real bank. If not, you'll lose some. These casemakers decided to take the risk.

This is getting ridiculous. I mean you would think it was peace in the whole world or something that was going to be announced on tuesday when you see the level of excitement. I mean if get the iPhone 4s or 5 who really cares. I mean its only a name. I mean I haven't seen anything about whats going to be so much better with the iPhone 5 than the iPhone 4s. The only thing seems to be design. Yes I am sure IF they release both they will be differentiated but still please tell me what the big deal is, because the change in case design is not something that great.

Redesign would mean much more durable, no antenna problem, and bigger screen,

I need a new phone so badly, and will buy whatever Apple releases. However, if they don't release this new redesigned phone I'm gonna be really disappointed.:p

I'm on the same bout as you. I bought about 2-3 after it came out. I dropped and my screen cracked and had to buy another 3GS for 400 with another 2 year contract. I've been eligible for an upgrade since May, hoping that a new phone would come out June. What ever comes out next month I will buy regardless if it's just an iPhone 4S or a 5. This phone is slow, I get a **** 3G signal, when I really need my GPS it just happens to freeze.

Either way it's gonna be big

Either a big disappointment or a big surprise, because apple have been airtight on this one!

No offense AT&T (I'm from Australia, I think its AT&T?) but I could crap out a better case than that even after curry:eek:

This would be awesome, if the iphone 5 teardrop is coming to us!!!! Only a few days left before we know the deal, but hopefully we see it :D

Scomora, you are the man. Awesome size comparison photos. That is really exciting, Apple could once again have "the world's thinnest smartphone" title. But that is THINN. Almost... dangerously thin

Any way to prove it's an iphone 5 case? Packaging that came with it perhaps? It's super thin! That leads me to believe it could be an ipod touch case.

BUT...

I really hope your case signals a bigger screened iphone for all of us out here with lesser eyesight and/or bigger fingers.

A faster processor with better camera and a bigger screen + iOS 5 would be totally awesome in my books.

I think the term your looking for.....

I've kept silent on this debate until now because there has been so much back and forth, but I think its safe to assume that its happening now. I just don't see such a large company as AT&T buying cases on speculation and then stocking the shelves with them. If anything, they'd sign a letter of understanding with some case manufacturers to the tune of "if your case is legit, we'll take 20,000 units when the time comes, and if it isn't we have no obligation to buy anything at all."

While I'm super-excited to see this... I think its also safe to assume case mate is now officially in the dog house. If Apple did in fact give a select few case manufacturers early access for design/production time, and they let this slip so badly -- they wont be on any future lists.

I think the term you're looking for is; Sold on consignment.

It is common for a major retailer to take a stock on consignment, and pay for it as it is sold. No major wheeling and dealing, it's often what a major retailer does, when it is dealing with a small supplier.

To me, this isn't very solid evidence. It could just mean that AT&T has taken a no-risk punt. Which is the only thing that gives this rumour any weight, as if anyone is going to have an idea of a new iPhone, it should be AT&T.

This is hardly proof

Over-sized package with no AT&T branding, no evidence that it's even in an AT&T store, and anyone can print a label like the one in the photo.
Need a bit more than that...

Still, evidence of a redesigned iPhone 5 case being bought and included in ATT's database... that's not small.

I'm seriously befuddled here, I cannot for the life of me remember the last time Apple has done this to me.
