Day 1 buy from the Apple online store for me. I have no desire to camp out overnight, but i am still excited, as long as its up to par or exceeding with features.
Oh please record that with a Dwight Schrute voice.

Agreed. I like the idea of a subtle and elegantly done strobe that would be an indicator for notifications, etc. when the phone is asleep. But I've always been curious why the iPhone (and especially the iPad) doesn't have the backlit :apple: logo like the MBPs and MBAs when in use. That would be killer. But for obvious reasons it seems like it would be to conserve battery power. As far as the mockup shown on page 1, I"m not a fan of that design at all - the back is heinous.

1) It's very easy to have a lit up Apple on the Macbooks, whereas the iPhone/iPad have the entire guts of the phone between the lightsource and the logo.

2) Having the notification light on the back of the device is a terrible idea. Do you place you phone screen down when you've it out?

3) It'd be an incredibly tacky thing to do.

The current design is an absolute masterpiece. Going back to chamfered edges would be a huge step backwards.

Apple isn't going to ditch the design they invested in for the iPhone 4. iPhone 6? Maybe. But not this go around. Improved specs, that's it.

Can't wait to see you all disappointed.

I don't think we'll be "disappointed". Even the iPhone4 as it is stands out as the best smart phone on the market today. Even if they just improve the specs that would make it even better.

I would think the iPhone 5 will be:

+ Current design.
+ Maybe a Liquid metal back in place of glass?
+ Maybe a slightly bigger screen in the current case?
+ Upgraded processor
+ Upgraded cameras
+ More battery life
+ RFID
+ 4G
+ iOS 5

I mean really... what else you going to add? Kitchen sink? It's a smart phone that's pretty darn smart already.

iPod Touch 4

OK, where is the wifi antena on the iTouch 4? It has an all aluminum back with no plastic slot to allow such communication to flow easily.

the antennas will be built into the plastic apple logo in the back.

you heard it here first ;)

lol thats been the way of the ipad and lots of non apple devices way before, leave it to apple to keep old tech branded new still, same with the cortex a9

I've had all the iPhones and I do think the 3GS was the most comfortable to hold, so maybe this wouldn't be bad. The iPhone 4 does look cool though. As long as it functions well, I'm not too concerned how it looks.

Liquidmetal!

apple licensed liquidmetal exclusively. from the liquid metal SEC filing...
"granted to Apple a perpetual, worldwide, fully-paid, exclusive license to commercialize such intellectual property in the field of consumer electronic products in exchange for a license fee"

now, they surely didn't do that so they could include a high-tech paperclip with the iphone 4. they clearly have plans for this material.

there has been lots of talk about a new "edge to edge" design that would essentially reduce the thickness of the side bezels to gain added real estate for a larger screen. such a design will require a very tough, very rigid material that can be cast with great precision. liquidmetal is stronger than aluminum, stainless steel or even titanium alloy. it's super light and easier to mold. its rigidity would make such a design possible and it's resistance to scratching, cracking or denting would make it extremely durable.

the liquidmetal website also says that by mixing it with other alloys, you can achive unique colors which could be an interesting twist..and finally there is a vague reference to unique "acoustic properties". who knows what that really means...

i think they'll go to metal. the obvious weight savings, thickness reduction and durability gains are too strong to ignore. the only wildcard is the antenna. i have no idea what they'll do about that...

Yes! Forget this mockup, but Apple has to be nearly ready to use liquidmetal, and maybe this alloy won't degrade the signal like aluminum. ...Apple will release a redesigned iPhone this year, not next.

here comes all the iPad 2 look alike mods for iPhone 5... like this has never happened before.
iPhone-G4.jpg

That's beautiful. I'd be forced to buy that phone.

My iPhone 5:

- Same buttons & form factor as iPhone 4

- Same antenna design as Verizon Phone (e.g. - black line locations)

- Screen Width - edge to edge. Bezel removed on left and right hand side.

- Screen larger - 3.7 inch to 4 inch

- Home button a bit lower or a bit smaller

- A5 chip

- 1 GB RAM

- Better Graphics Performance

- Upgraded Front Facing Camera, better Flash on the back

- iOS 5 @ launch

It would seem a very strange move for Apple to completely redesign the iPhone only a year after dramatically changing it to glass.

The iPhone 4 looks great but one thing that got me from the Steve Jobs iPad 2 Keynote speech was when he referred to the 1st gen iPad design. He commented on the fact that they made a beautiful device but covered it up with the iPad case.

I think the same can be more than said for the iPhone 4 and bumber combo.

Whenever I feel my iPhone 4 without the bumper (which is rare) it seems like a different device, perhaps the way the designers imagined the phone to be. I think if we do see a redesign we will hear the same argument as what Jobs used in the iPad 1 to iPad 2 design.

4G will be the most important upgrade IMO. I might be dreaming but would that mean Facetime isn't limited to just wi-fi?

While I doubt the aluminum back, I know :apple: won't return to a sloped sides like the 3GS for the 5.

Ives seemed pretty positive about the benefits of the iPad2's curved/tapered edges. I'm definitely putting money on a return to curves - something I'd love. My 3G feels way better in my hand than the square 4.

The current design is an absolute masterpiece. Going back to chamfered edges would be a huge step backwards.

My kids have iPod Touches and I have to agree with you, the heavily chamfered edges are not my favorite... but if they scaled down dimensions of the MBP's base it would be a great product. I'd like to see a mock up of that if anyone is skilled and has the time.

I think what we need to do is stop thinking about the case and think about the internals. IF the new iPad 2 has a PowerVR chip in it, it's rumoured to be the dual core 543. Along with the A9 Cortex dual core. These specs are half the power of the NGP as that is based on the quad core versions of the same chips. Think about that for a second..... now think about an iPhone with half the power of the NGP in it!! Now think of all the games..... oh yeahhh....

But Apple MUST recess the camera lens and put in a much better camera with more features....

I see some people think the glass is to fragile, but the screen is the same so you will always have glass to protect. It's not the normal non tempered glass, it's actually much stronger then regular glass. Anyway's it's very easy to change the back and it's only $29's. We (family, wife, daughter & son) have four iPhone 4's and only had to replace one back panel, my daughters broke after her cousin dropped it without her bumper on it. It's not hard to take care of it, and when you spend the money on it why would you not use care when using it. If you are hard on equipment just make sure you put it in a case, because if you are hard on stuff it doesn't matter what it's made of.
Twice the glass means twice the likely hood of the unit breaking. Stupid design decision there is no doubt.

Realistically speaking, though, I would expect a different material for the back of the next iPhone. This would lend itself to many back designs from a carbon fibor look to different colors.

It could be liquid metal. If I recall, though, early on in the iPhone 4 design, they went glass because it let the antenna transmit through it. But, if the antenna is on the outside (as it is), this shouldn't then be an issue.

Liquid Metal is a mix of three or more metals with characteristics similar to plastic, but still metal none-the-less.

...It doesn't make sense that they would redesign the antenna again. They've seem to have gotten it down pat with the Verizon model...

You obviously missed the fact that consumer reports gave the same bad review for the verizon iPhone 4 as the att iPhone 4 —for the same attenna issue. Apple won't wait another year to redesign the iPhone, and miss the "recommend" rating from consumer reports two years in a row.
