All I can predict is that they will do like the iPhone 3G to 3GS. That's almost a fact what's going to happen with the iPhone 4. New internals, same or slightly changed externals. Probably my guess is that it will be a liquid metal band, same glass front and back, new internals. iPhone 4S. Watch it happen. It's Apple. Come on.

The current design is an absolute masterpiece. Going back to chamfered edges would be a huge step backwards.

It's a work of art that you never see because you're forced to lock it inside of a case 24-7 to protect the exposed glass edges from impact shatter.

It's a damned phone -- job 1 should be lasting a 2 year service contract without breaking because it's so fragile. My 3GS has been a tank, over the course of multiple drops, falls, and skids, with only a slight crack in the plastic along the 30-pin port to show for it. I know I'd be looking at a shattered glass back long ago with an iPhone 4.

I hear the apologists already about being "tough" on tech -- I use my phone constantly for work. It's going to fall on the ground. It's going to get dropped. Handling something a hundred times per day over the course of a 730 day service agreeement will inevitably result in drops.

I'm sitting on $299 Apple gift card as we speak -- even though I've been upgrade eligible since the iP4 was unveiled -- because I don't want to buy a phone I know that I'll break. If the next iPhone is more glass "art," I'll be using my gift card for an iPad (which -- surprise -- doesn't need an all-glass back to look amazing and retain functionality) and keeping my old 3GS as a phone.

The iPhone 4 looks great but one thing that got me from the Steve Jobs iPad 2 Keynote speech was when he referred to the 1st gen iPad design. He commented on the fact that they made a beautiful device but covered it up with the iPad case.

this is a good point, maybe steve's comments hint at the possibility of a iphone 5 with no need for a case. having said that, it would have to be a different material to the first ipad; the back of that was highly prone to scratching.

does anyone know if the ipad 2 uses the same material on the back as the first?

As much as I love the iPhone 4 design I'd like to see the glass back wrap around the antenna to protect it from signal degrade in low signal areas.

Knowing Apple's history though, they probably won't redesign it till IPhone 6. Hey my contract ends then!

Now if they could move the weak spot to the top of the phone, there is a less chance it will get touched. That or come up with some built in coating to cover the weak spot (which I'm sure apple will trademark with some fancy name).

People are referencing the curves on the side, bud. And how it makes the buttons harder to push and the fact that it is a revert in design sense.

If Apple thought it was a design flaw - they wouldn't have the curved backs on the iPod touch. I don't really want my iPhone to be any thinner - and I wouldn't really care if it were thicker. Lets also keep in mind that with the iPad - you aren't holding it in the palm of your hand as you would be with the iPhone, they are completely different ways to use and hold the devices. All things aside (and not that it's a pain to use) but - it's no secret that the iPhone,or iPad for that matter have never been exactly ergonomic.

I drop my iPhone 4 all the time. I worked in an auto shop for a year with it and it hasn't let me down. The only scratch I have (and it's a very unnoticeable one) is when it slid out of my pocket @ the movies the FIRST DAY I HAD IT

I think it would be fantastic if it looked like that, but the aluminum has to be the same as the ipad. Im not a big fan of the ipod touch aluminum. It's too shiny and just looks cheap IMO. And also, I know this is probably just a mockup, but I dont like that huge aluminum bezel just jutting out like that...

"all the antennas are behind the Apple logo"

Uh-huh. Now we know the article is BS.

The design of the iPhone 4 is my absolute favorite so far. I may be in the minority here, but I would be sad to see the glass on the back go. It just looks so clean. I don't really want to go back to the rounded edges.

I've had a bumper style case on it since the 2nd day I had the phone...I couldn't even think about covering it up. And guess what? Not a scratch on it. I've dropped the phone a few times as well...and the bumper (and now my Atomic case) took all of the impact.

Alu is not happening, bad signal throuw alu. Thats why airport xtreme is still plastic.

I have to say that I saw an iPhone that was silver in the Eaton Center at T.O.

I was really shocked and I followed the ma'am for a while to get a better look at it.

It was not an iPhone 4 and the contour on the top and bottom was more curvy than 3Gs and like I said, silver (very much like MacBook Pro) with no case for sure.

Prototype? I doubt it but it was really surprising for me. It was also very beautiful needless to say.

A big question is: what would it be doing here above the 49th Parallel?

How is this news?

Apple is having issues with the glass back --> no more glass

A5 chip in iPad 2 --> A5 chip in iPhone 5

Apple releases iPhones in June/July --> iPhone 5 released in June/July

Apple uses aluminum on almost everything --> iPhone 5 will have aluminum back

This isn't a rumor, this is common sense.

That's funny. Neither my wife nor I use a case and we haven't shattered any glass. I even dropped mine 15 feet off a stair case bannister - it bounced off the carpeted floor below, with nary a scratch.

Looks like someone took a 3GS and photoshopped what they imagined could be the iphone 5.

Decent amount of work.

I don't think Apple would take steps back. iPhone is gorgeous. Perhaps the best looking phone so far. 3GS was not bad itself, but in terms of appearance the 4 is better.

I also doubt they will go completely all aluminum. Because the first iphone was, and it had signal problems too. They want to plastic to help improve this. Then they went to glass and the current designs. All supposing to improve signal strength.

And iphone 4 was an improvement, outside of bridging the gap with your skin to potentially cause signal loss (doesn't happen to all iphones4).

Apple needs to move forward from here. Although a mockup of iphone5 using iphone4 dimensions with more aluminum might be more possible. Get the back glass replaced with aluminum or gasp, some sort of plastic to allow signal through.

The band around the iphone4 could also be tweaked and improved.

Let's face it, even with its flaw, the design of the iphone4 is a step in the right direction. The flaws would have been difficult to address in mass post iphone4 production, but could easily be fix within a year for the iphone5.

My prediction, iphone5 looks like iphone4 with antenna tweaks, [may support CDMA and GSM], A5 cpu; more RAM.

Not sure if more storage is necessary, like 64GB & 32GB... to replace 64GB, 32GB. I barely am able to fill my 32GB; and not because I can't. Its a pain in the butt to manage when you have that much data on the phone.

I dont see a point in more space until Apple or someone perfects the smart phone into a better than today phone-also-as-USB-mobile-storage. This would be sweet!

but many tried, and it's currently clumsy and forces you to trade off something (batter life, performance, etc).

Going away from the glass is a good idea, so is moving the antenna back inside the phone. With the new iPad being even thinner than iPhone 4 imagine how thin this new phone is going to be lol.

I can imagine a unibody design using liquid metal for scratch resistance and being even thinner than the iPad 2 with a 4inch screen. :D

'm with you. Love iphone appearance and feel in hands.

I like my glass back and bumper case solution. A5 would be nice but so far still not regretting I went for the Verizon iPhone4.

i'm fine with aluminum, but i'm not a fan of the tapered edges on the ipod touch. it makes the volume and power buttons really hard to press.

+1

It also makes it harder to plug in the charger. Hopefully the form will be closer to the 3GS than the iPod touch

I would certainly hope that Apple will make the iPhone 5 available in a 64GB model. I was already a bit disappointed that they haven't done so with the iPhone 4.
