Liquid Metal back!
Just saying that that would be a good time to start using the superior properties of it. E.G. RF transparent and scratch resistant.
:) Otherwise there is no reason to redesign the back casing. Makes sense to me.

The current design is an absolute masterpiece. Going back to chamfered edges would be a huge step backwards.

That's how I feel too, and that's the reason I went with the iPhone 4 from Verizon now instead of waiting for iPhone 5 or later. The iPhone 4 is, to me, perfection in industrial design. I love the look and the feel and the performance.

So if the rumors are true and Apple reverts to aluminum-backed phones, I'll happily stick with my beautiful and functional iPhone 4.

I'm sorry. That is hideous and a huge step backwards from a design perspective. They cannot go from premium, luxury-looking glass to dull aluminum reminiscent of the first iPhone. I believe Apple's design sense has strayed with the iPad 2 and the reverse has become a bit sloppy and not-as-simple as it should be in my opinion. The speaker grill is hideous.

here comes all the iPad 2 look alike mods for iPhone 5... like this has never happened before.

Wow, I think this design looks great. I don't like the iPod touch curved style either, buttons are too hard to push.

While design of the iPhone 4 is elegant, this may be a case of form trumping function. If there have been excessive issues with this design (antenna, shattering glass, scratching, light bleed with the white) Apple may have retreated until material manufacturing catches up with their aesthetic vision.

If this is true, if liquidmetal is transparent to cell phone signals and not just wifi, then it will happen!:D

The iPhone 4 looks so much better than the 2g, 3g, 3gs and this mockup.

If the iPhone 5 looks like this, then I'm buying an iPhone 4, unless the iPhone 5 has a 4 inch screen.

I don't think we'll be "disappointed". Even the iPhone4 as it is stands out as the best smart phone on the market today. Even if they just improve the specs that would make it even better.

I would think the iPhone 5 will be:

+ Current design.
+ Maybe a Liquid metal back in place of glass?
+ Maybe a slightly bigger screen in the current case?
+ Upgraded processor
+ Upgraded cameras
+ More battery life
+ RFID
+ 4G
+ iOS 5

I mean really... what else you going to add? Kitchen sink? It's a smart phone that's pretty darn smart already.

I'm with you on this, they'll change the antenna placement possibly - maybe more memory too.

I can't see Apple going back on a design. They have moved forward from the curved backs.

This is a mockup used as just a visual aid for the article. They haven't stated anything about going back to the curved back.

Calm down people, it's just a mockup.
:)

Great, now we can look forward to scratched up Apple logo once again.

You can never please everybody.

The original iphone was an awesome design I hope that it does have an aluminum back. Makes the phone feel that much nicer and just really makes it feel special.

Awww, that's really bad coz it wil make the phone scratch prone :(. I dont think apple will remove camera in the front. I also dont like the curves at the edges

Actually, no. The article is proposing bringing back aluminum. If Apple did that, they would employ the curves used in the iPad. You are the one who needs to rethink it. ;)

LOL. Yes, "special" is the word. I will take elegant glass to cheap, dull aluminum. Thanks.

I agree. I had my original iPhone for 3 years before upgrading to the iPhone 4. That thing was sexy. I would buy it over the 4 in a heartbeat if it had the same specs. Just felt more solid. I was also less scared to break it (double glass.. come on). The 3G and 3GS, I did not like so much. If the 4 was that same body style I doubt I would have upgraded.

With all that being said. The iPhone 4 is still beyond sexy - and definitely deserves its design awards.

Not if they design it like the new iPad. The sides would be rounded but the back wouldn't be.

Any half-decent Industrial Designer would NEVER go back on a design.

Apple moves forward and innovates.

This is not innovation.

Apple isn't going to ditch the design they invested in for the iPhone 4. iPhone 6? Maybe. But not this go around. Improved specs, that's it.

Can't wait to see you all disappointed.
I didn't read everything so maybe someone else said this already: The iPad is squarish on the sides, and the iPad2 is tapered. That goes against every quote above.
I think the iPhone 4 design is Apple's best work. In my opinion, it's the most sleek, elegant, mature phone design ever. I've never been a fan of the tapered edges, and I was extremely disappointed to see them on the iPad, but the only reason I'm saying this is because of the mockup.
Ditto. If this was June and I had a choice between this and the 4 before it was no longer available, I'd pick the 4.

I agree the iPhone is too sharp of a phone right now. At the most I would like an anodized black case around the phone but that's pushing it. I don't think the iPhone 4 is ready for a design change yet. I say iPhone 4S FTW

Well it *better* happen if they don't do a redesign, since a serious bumps in specs is needed to keep high sales.

On the other hand - the current specs are quite impressive already, how to improve that significantly?

Which is why I love competition :D

I like that "rumored" design (on the front page) much better than what they did with the iPhone 4. I never liked the glass on the back thing. I never liked the sharp edges of the iPhone 4. But we'll see what happens in June.

Seems pretty odd to me that a product that just got a complete redesign less than a year ago, will be redesigned again.

Well, look at original iPhone to iPhone 3G, that was a year old. iPad to iPad 2 was less than a year with a major back redesign. I don't think it's the slightest bit out of the question. I really love the iPhone 4 design but glass front and back was a design flub if there ever was one. You've got to have it in a case to prevent the glass from shattering in the event of a drop.

Terrible

Ugly , so we are going from a great looking glass and metal iphone to a clone of the iTouch. I love the round bottons but I guess if this picture is an indication we will be going also to an ipad/itouch feel. Glad to know my 4 will at least last for a few years without needing to upgrade.:(
