as much as i would kill for a sexy Aluminum backing, i'm so not ready for the "what we learnt from the iPad" marketing crap...especially with the British guy who is full of **** lol

iPhone is the mother of all halos but now Apple wants the iPad to be the slut of all halos...don't be surprised to see Mac Pros with IOS.....

Idk what to make of this. Also, Jonny Ive isn't full of ****, he's just very enthusiastic about promotional videos lol.

I doubt that will be the design, it looks dated and lacks the "luxury" feel that the current iPhone 4 has.

If they go back to aluminum, I'm guessing something more along the lines of the iPhone 4 rather than the prior models.

When the first images of the suspected iPhone 4 were posted here, there was an outcry about that "horrible design" and that J. Ive would NEVER do such a thing. And now it already has become a design icon?

Will be funny to read here in 2012, when rumors of iPhone 6 design start to float around and people will declare iPhone 5 design to be iconic... :D

This is so right. I said I liked the new design, but so many people absolutely hated it, but now it's a different story. Obviously the mockup is wrong, unless they lost Jonny Ive earlier than we thought and they suddenly found a way aluminum wouldn't kill reception and therefore leave out the black plastic. I'm sure whatever it looks like, the iPhone 5 will be a good phone. I don't think apple would screw it up again after the 3G and 3GS after only one year. The antenna "issue" is basically a non-issue for almost everyone. That was a joke.

I much prefer the shape of the iphone4 to the blobby 3GS. The original iPhone was also excellent, despite the hideous chrome bezel, which bothers me to this day. I think they would be missing a trick to abandon the 4 shape just because of the antenna positions, but it is a legitimate issue that needs to be resolved. A similar design, but the rear flaceplate replaced with the same stainless steel / coloured aluminium would be great.

The original iPhone was one of the best designs, ever. I wish it returns in the iPhone nano form.

I think that not everyone is comfortable with a square shaped phone. iPhone 4 is one of the most elegant designs by Apple, no doubt. Instantly, it appears to be a business phone and then a casual phone; so I was impressed. But holding it in the hand, the original iPhone felt much better. Some people don't prefer square shaped phones :), well some. :D

As much as I love the look and feel of the iPhone 4, I think it's a terrible design for a phone. When Steve announced it he drew comparisons to Leica cameras, however, leica cameras are extremely robust and their design ensures you don't have to treat them with kid gloves. The iPhone 4s glass sandwich is an idea that's inherently flawed, it's fragility contradicting Ives hero Dieter Rams principle of long lasting devices.

It would be nice to have an iphone again where you dont have to leave it in a case 24 - 7... Of course a mobile needs to be looked after but with the 4 I find it's so easy to damage that I leave it at home or in the car.

Why does everyone think this could be the iPhone 5?

If anything it would make a nice Gen 5 iPod Touch.

And if the mock up was anything to go by it would explain no flash and the new antenna (for wifi).

I would actually love an iPhone that looked like that. The original iPad design was much better than the current iPad 2 in my opinion.

Yeah that is a pretty sweet design on a phone... kinda wish they continued the same design of the first iPad and just added more muscle inside it. 128GB iPad would have certainly made me feel more comfortable leaving my Macbook Pro at home alittle more.

Any half-decent Industrial Designer would NEVER go back on a design.

Apple moves forward and innovates.

How many different ways are there to house a rectangular touchscreen? Once you go through a few generations, you're bound to start repeating yourself.

Are you old enough to remember the complete evolution of the iPod mini/nano…?

I've always seen progress as associated with designs becoming sleeker, thinner and less jagged, to me it gives a sense of refinement over what came before, and that's why when I first saw the iPhone 4 design I wasn't too well disposed towards it, it reminded me of a PSP. But gradually I warmed up to it and now I can say that I do favour it over the old 3GS design and despite how the 3GS fits the bill when it comes to sleek and refined, I wouldn't like to see a return to that design, maybe because it is now an 'old' design in the face of the iPhone 4 and to return would feel like a U-turn or a regression.

Just my opinion though on the aesthetic itself. People have different impressions of progress in aesthetics. Although I'm sure we can all agree on the objective progress of the hardware power.

Keep on waiting, it's likely never going to happen anytime soon. It was only used for the sim tool.

Actually, if you all recall, Apple bought Liquidmetal AFTER they tried it out with the sim tool! I've seen a post where they're supposedly going to use it for some new battery technology, but I think that may be a distraction...

iPhone 5 in liquidmetal would be the best! ...but aluminum is definitely a possibility if they can work out the antennae issue...AND to the naysayers that say Apple won't go backward:

1) pretty much every Apple product is made w/ aluminum
2) won't go back to an old design?? Then why does the iPad 2 look more like the iPod touch or original iPhone, and less like the first iPad?

3) Customer service ratings:
There are several problems with the iPhone 4 design to consider:
a) Glass backs break too easy resulting in:
•Apple loses $ to replace OR • higher rate of customer complaints (also, they don't want to make a pretty design that has to be hidden in a case... i.e.: the iPad2 & "cover" designed together)
b) ...still haven't worked out issues with making a white version
c) Apple won't settle for anything less than a Consumer Reports "Recommended" rating. ...whether you agree w/ CR or not too many Americans listen to them for Apple to ignore this.
d) a, b, and c are all negatives that Apple will not allow to degrade their customer service ratings. ...if you go by the OS numbers, android OS is gaining ground and Apple will do whatever it takes to keep iOS on top!

This mockup could be Apple's design direction for the rumored less expensive iPhone, or perhaps both (and yes, looks like iPod touch, iPhone 1, iPad 2 ...and those all have similar curved edges as the MacBook Pro unibody covers). For me personally, I really hope the next iPhone has a liquidmetal or aluminum back, if it does, i won't have to get a case for it!

I recently switched from a iPhone 2g to iPhone 4. And even though the new one is really nice will all that glass on the back, the old one with the aluminum was really well made also. In fact i have the new one for about 2 months and it already has scratches and a small crack. The old one i had for about 2 years took its time really well and was scratched lightly and had one small dent.

I think the iPhone 4 design is Apple's best work. In my opinion, it's the most sleek, elegant, mature phone design ever. I've never been a fan of the tapered edges, and I was extremely disappointed to see them on the iPad, but the only reason I'm saying this is because of the mockup.

Anyway, if they do go for aluminum, I hope it's not the shiny reflective aluminum like on the iPod Touch. I like the aluminum on the iPad MUCH more.

Wasn't there a problem with the signal getting through the aluminum and that's why they changed it?

Liquid metal removes this issue?

I adore the box-shaped design of iPhone 4. Hopefully they keep that and not go back to the tapered designs from the past… they look cheap and should only be used on the cheaper line (like iPod Touch).

This is not innovation.

Demonstrable nonsense.

iPod mini, iPod nano 2nd gen, iPod nano 4th gen.

iPod shuffle 2nd gen, iPod shuffle 4th gen.

Apple isn't going to ditch the design they invested in for the iPhone 4. iPhone 6? Maybe. But not this go around. Improved specs, that's it.

Can't wait to see you all disappointed.
