What will Apple do about the next Iphone Killer?
Bigger
Faster
Better
Blah Blah blah

one thing nobody been able to figure out better is the software that is a big reason people buy a device. No not everybody is a iphone lover who cares. the months will tell what happen! look for Iphone 5 or what ever they decide to call it next summer at WWDC as usual.

also as far as 1080P big deal 99% of people can't see it on a 32" tv let alone a 4" screen.this is why most 32" and smaller are 720 most geeks know this and will see past this bs.

highly doubt Steve Jobs is worrying about the Tegra2 just yet any way! just another wanna be player. I bet SJ is listening to his favorite song

Lastly nothing last forever any way most people thought the Iphone would have been dead years ago.

First off, pretty sure the 1080p output means that the phone can record videos in 1080p, the screen will probably not be 1080p. Why wouldn't anyone want that?

Second, Jobs is probably sweating buckets about android and Tegra 2, expect a 4S for early 2011.

1080p playback is a pretty compelling feature if you want high quality video streaming onto your 42 inch+ screen.

1080p playback isn't for viewing on your smartphone, its for viewing when streaming onto a TV via HDMI.

Additionally, one can tell the video quality difference when viewing on a larger tv, notably 42 inch and up screens.

However, 1080p playback is just one feature/benefit out of many. Lets not wrap our heads around 1080p playback.

But its so great! :p

Steve did say "make no mistake...Google wants to kill the iPhone. We won't let that happen." He's obviously aware of it, but I doubt he's sweating buckets. :p

ok good point on 1080P. someday there will be a so called Iphone Killer it's bound to happen Or Apple will just move on to something else. there not number 1 btw Nokia is still top dog! allot have tried so time will tell on Tegra 2. just do a search on Iphone killer and see how many were before!

More Megapixels do NOT make a picture better. It just makes the picture file bigger.

Bettery lenses make better pictures. You can take a crap 8 megapixel picture and a very nice crisp 1 megapixel picture.

for regular 4x6 prints, you really need 2 maybe 3 megapixels.

You are dreaming about an iPhone 5 next year. There wont be such a device next year. Period.

I tell you what, as soon as that LG comes out, guess what will happen? They will put it head to head with the iPhone 4 to compare.

And guess what else is going to happen? All those specs wont really make any difference.

It's all about the software. Apple's big thing next year will be all about software, not hardware. It's just like MACs. You can have a MAC with lower specs run as nicely or maybe even better than a PC with higher specs.

The software updates will have the iPhone 4 be on par with all these super phones coming out. You'll hardly notice a difference in real world tests.

What is a dual core going to do when I am answering emails and looking at my CNN app? Not much.

a 1ghz iPhone 4 + a big software update can run as well as a dual core LG Android.

The regular user doesn't know a Tegra 2 from their ass. All they know is how the phone works for them.

I mean, there's a phone out there now with a 12 megapixel camera. Every month an iPhone killer is released.

People want to kill the iPhone so badly. I wonder why?

and another thing about this phone. I think this phone will be a CDMA phone. So, unless they release a GSM version, an iPhone killer it wont be.

Nvidia is going to make a big splash next year with the Tegra 2. Imagine the Microsoft Zune HD runs silky smooth over most current phones using Snapdragons? And it used an older Tegra chip. Tegra is just far more power efficient. The next generation of cell phones will have usage time of 20-24 hours over the 6-10 hours we currently get just browsing on WiFi. That's why I pay attention to alot of Android phones. The OS may not be as fluid as iOS, webOS, or WP7, but they continue to push hardware much faster.

All these things are just power points, manufacturer specs and speculations. Wait until the devices come out and are tested.

How many people do YOU know that got the 10 hours battery life advertised out of their Macbooks?

and look at the picture you just posted. DID you look at it? I mean really look?

Check out the small print at the bottom. It reads

"Battery Life assumes 24WHr Battery and "something I can't read" Display"

Do you really think you'll be listening to music for almost a month on a cellphone? :D

The only things I can think of with 24WHr batteries are Netbooks.

History Repeats

Once again, Apple will be outpaced and out-powered by the dominant OS. However, Apple doesn't throw speed at a poor, slow OS. Just as with every breakthrough in the last 30 years they will build a total product that integrates modest power with a capable OS and most important superior battery life.

Battery life still reigns supreme.

I think we are throwing a bit too much at cell phones if we want them to be full PSP gaming devices.

I mean, they already do enough. Emailing, browsing, office document work, apps that do a thousand things, etc etc.

Because, I am guessing a dual core smart phone with a 4"+ display is targeted at gamers. I don't see anyone else benefiting from that.

That being said, the notion that the iPhone 4 will be obsolete by June, or that Apple will release a so called iPhone 5 that will make the iPhone 4 obsolete is ridiculous.

*Yawn* oh brother, its that time of the year again is it?

*insert supposed next gen device here* is gonna be huge, its over for Apple, iPhone is out of date or how will they ever compete.

Dual core processors? i find it amusing that instead of finding ways to increase battery life, majority of manufacturers have a talent in looking for ways to shorten it!

1080p video? pointless/a waste on a cellphone screen. Oh what's that? you're gonna connect it to your TV and playback 1080p footage you recorded with a cellphone camera lens? Great...goodluck with that.

Bigger isn't always better...bunch of spec whores.

of course its not going to look exactly like the 360 version.

Dungeon Defenders will be available for iOS as well, and using the unreal engine, which is the SAME as Epic Citadel.

I'm finding it hilarious that you're trying to knock on Dungeon Defenders, when its a cross platform game using the SAME exact engine as Epic Citadel. Your fanboyism is proving your ignorance.
Doesn't matter if it's running the same engine. Call of Duty technically runs the same engine as Quake. Engines don't have one preset level of quality, they can be optimized for different devices. The fact is that Dungeon Defenders isn't on par with Epic Citadel in terms of quality probably because it's a busier game.

I'm finding it hilarious that you're trying to call me ignorant when you yourself know absolutely nothing about how engines work and think that just because X has the same engine as Y, X will look just as good. Your daftness is proving your, well, daftness.

OK, maybe it's just me, but re this thread and others like it, please, JUST KILL ME NOW! It's November...like we know what the "iPhone 5" will look like...

How many "iPhone killers" will we have to put up with over the years until one actually manages to kill the iPhone?

This technology matters to a very small amount of consumers. Most people can't understand tech specs and think they are on the cutting edge by buying a Blackberry with 2 year old tech inside...

Theres a strong difference in specs and real world performance of products, people posting on websites like this and places like Engadget, Digg, Reddit, etc. are AN EXTREMELY SMALL PART OF THE POPULATION.

The iPhone has a brand reputation of being fluid and easy to use, which it is. AND DUE TO APPLE'S FAMOUS MARKETING, THE WORLD KNOWS THIS. This is akin to the brand recognition of the Mac line, where as most average consumers would categorize Windows-running machines as sloppy (in general terms). Virtually every female I know has NO IDEA what Google Android is. The only response I've gotten is "That's that phone from Verizon, right?" (referring to the now aging Motorola Droid) and then express how it looks too confusing to use. It'd be interesting to see what the gender poll is for smartphone devices...as per my real world experience, females either have a Blackberry or an iPhone.

CLIFFS: We'll see a bunch of phones come out with new technology, a few buyers will keep posting on these websites about how much better they are, and nobody outside those walls will care. We've historically seen this with so many smartphones that were considered "iPhone Killers" by the blog population, and have barely put a dent in. Topics like these should only be started AFTER the devices come out and there is accurate sales data

+100 (again).
I've been saying the same thing for a couple of years now.

Wow, it seems that this whole forum is filled with troll-boys.

Seriously. A phone comes out with the fastest processor ever and amazing video recording capabilities and all you get is butt-hurt because its better than your phone that you locked yourself into a contract on.

This is why everyone else hates you guys. Well, I say LOL.

LOL, your phone isn't trendy anymore.
LOL, your phone has fallen behind in features
LOL, there is only one option if you want a phone running iOS
and LOL you have too much tunnel vision to realize when your money is buying you less and locking you in.

iPhone killers come and go, and many of them _are_ superior to the current gen iPhone in some aspects. 4G phones have faster speeds, the new Nokia seems to have a better camera, Windows phone 7 seems to have really nice social integration within its OS, many Android handsets have _huge_ displays.
All comes down to personal preference. (I don't believe i'd ever want a 4.5inch handset, for example)

About this Tegra stuff, here's my thoughts.

Nothing better to do than troll?

And on that note, why is nothing done about these trolls around here?

Despite the direction this thread is heading, I don't really think anything new will pop up on iPhone 5. I'm sure they'll bump up some specs from the 4 (which, in itself, would be nice) but I don't think any new fancy clad tech will be hitting the iPhone 5. My guess is based on the previous chain of their releases with their iPhones so it's usually every other iPhone has some game changing feature or some whoopty doo feature that is going to kill the competition. Now, as far as speculation goes, I think iPhone 6 will probably be the next ooh/aah phone from Apple. My guess is that spec bump for IP5 and something dandy for the IP6.

This is so true. 1080p is only 2MP since mega-pixel is determined by multiplying the 2 resolution numbers together (1920*1080)

Exactly. Dungeon Defenders will run better on a Tegra2 chip. Since you are willfully ignorant about specs, there is no reason to discuss this with you. You have the logic of a 13 year old Apple fankid. Dungeon Defenders is a different game from Epic Citadel, but they both run the same Unreal engine. I don't understand why you're even comparing the two, when theyre both made by different developers. And be rest assured that Tegra2 will outperform as its a graphics heavy chip. The PowerVR SGX you have in your iPhone4 will not compare to the Tegra2.

I don't have to prove your idiocy when you make statements such as

The fact is that Dungeon Defenders isn't on par with Epic Citadel in terms of quality probably because it's a busier game.'

Busier game. Yeah. you got me there.

Man, all i see are a bunch of insecure iPhone owners. So the hell what if theres true next generation phones coming this year? All the phones we've been dealing with including the iPhone series, Android phones, ALL derive from the same core chip, the ARM Cortex-A8.

Does one honestly believe that engineers are developing dual core phones without the thought of battery consumption? The whole idea of dual core phones (ARM Cortex A9) is to lengthen battery life.

Had the next iPhone leak mentioned it having a dual core processor with a high end graphics component, I would be all over it. The fact that so many users are so adamantly defensive/insecure BECAUSE its not iPhone is saddening.

For every high end phone thats released on Android, Jobs and his cohorts are working the extra mile to keep its iPhone series as competitive. The competition between Apple and Google is only benefiting us as customers.

The fact that people are complaining newer, faster, phones are coming out, I find a bit perplexing. Its how technology works. Moore's law. We also have to realize that most folks in the world are 'feature phone' users, or 'dumbphone' users. Theres still a large swath of the global population that will eventually join the smartphone world. Smartphone manufacturers dont' care as much about existing users, they care about the mass influx of new potential smartphone users that are coming through daily.

I'm bored so I'll add this..

I myself only care about getting the best product whatever it may be for my money, no what product it may be, from cars to clothes to electronics. I'm not a computer geek, I'm a car guy, I used to believe the hyped up specs when it came to computers because I knew nothing about them, over the years I learned that the kind of eye catching specs companies advertise don't tell the whole story. There's far more to it than just specs, it's the entire package and how everything works together.

The new Camaro is a great example when compared to a Mustang, sure the Camaro has a bigger engine, bigger brakes, a more advanced suspension, yet, the Mustang beats it in every performance category, from acceleration, to handling, to braking. So "more", and "bigger", don't always mean "better".

I don't care who makes the best smartphone, all I know is I want the best smartphone for me. And right now that ius the iphone 4, for others it may be an Evo or a WP7. Who really cares enough to go posting on forums dedicated to a product you do not own or like? That just seems pretty pathetic to me.

Now as far as iP5 goes, and the competition next year, all we need to do is look at what took place last year, as it was the same rumors and speculation being thrown all around. There was all sorts of talk about how the iphone was falling behind, there were phones coming out like the Evo with a 1GHZ processor!!! 4.3 inch screens!!! 8MP cameras! 720p video!! Etc, etc..

Then Apple came out with a phone matching all the specs of phones like the Evo other than screen size, yet it was made out of steel and glass, not cheap plastic, shot better video and pics with it's 5mp sensor, had the best display, and surprises like the gyroscope. So what makes anybody think they won't do the same thing again? Do you think Apple doesn't know what the competition is doing? Do you think they don't have the same access to that tech as other companies do? I guarantee you Apple knows far more about what the comp is up to than anybody posting here. And as we know, Apple does know how to make money, and the iphone has made them boatloads of it, so I'm pretty sure they will continue improving the iphone every year to keep the cash flowing.

What will the trolls say if Apple comes out with a phone next year that has a dual core processor, 1080p, and whatever else is the must have feature next year? Then what? We haven't heard anything about the iphone 5, so comparing next years phones to the ip4 is pretty dumb, especially when the 3GS still was neck and neck with all the iphone killers that came out through the middle of this year.

Now if someone builds a phone truly better than the iphone in every way, the only thing stopping me from getting one would be that I'm sort of locked into the whole itunes ecosystem.

Just my 2 cents..
