My point was, stop trying to be 'speculative, controversial message-board poster'. It's petty, and there's no reason for speculating when someone is going to die in a topic when someone asked when a product is being released.

I agree. It's really bad form to not only make up rumors about someone dying, but also to do that randomly in a thread about something completely different

iPhone contracts expiring this friday

Damn it. I have a iPhone 3G (wife's) and a iPhone 3GS (mine) contracts expiring this friday.

I am so so very tempted to get the iPhone 4s. I like the 4s a lot. I have a company issued iPhone 4 from which is a HUGE improvement in speed/camera/display - that I cant imagine any update/upgrade to iPhone5 to be revolutionary.

But Damn it - I will be so upset if new phone gets announced in June.

What to do... What to do...

It's only a month away. Read a book or something in the meantime.

Yes, Steve's illness is merely a rumor. Oh, and his demise will have no effect on Apple or its product releases. My bad. It's not like they are rolling out company-wide preparations for it or anything.

Steve Jobs hired dean of Yale School of Management Joel Podolny to run the Apple University, an internal group also featuring business professors and Harvard veterans that are writing a series of case studies to prepare employees for the life at Apple after Jobs. These case studies focus on Apple’s recent business decisions and internal culture, they are exclusive to employees and taught by top executives like Tim Cook and Ron Johnson.

The iPhone 3GS was a 'delay' while they ironed out the new design for the 4. The white iPhone4 is the current holdover. There is no reason to delay the 5 until September if all they are going to do is throw an A5 in there. They are waiting to perfect or scale up something new. This is a big release for Jobs.

The white iPhone was released because Apple promised they would release it, it certainly isn't holding over iPhone 4 sales until the 5. Honestly, how many white iPhones are going to be sold before the 5? As far as delaying the iPhone 5, there are plenty of reasons. Supply shortages from Japan, Verizon iPhone, Second gen 4G chip availability, ect ect.

I think the best argument for a September release is that we have yet to see iOS 5. There's no way Apple would announce the new iPhone at WWDC without releasing an iOS 5 beta by now.

Sarcasm? I wish the man well and hope he is okay. But very few people are as much the face of a company as Jobs is to apple

Actually, it will be a major overhaul, otherwise there wouldn't be much reason for the delay. The form factor may not change but you can be sure it will have significant improvements over the iPhone4, especially a white one. lol
- bigger screen
- multi-touch back
- liquid metal innards
- antenna that works
- change in home button
- obvious speed, ram, battery life

This is likely the last major product announcement before Steve Jobs passes (unless iPad 3 is early). I doubt it will be ho-hum and delayed just to add the A5.

Agreed it'll be a major overhaul. Every iPhone hardware upgrade is.

I agree with everything except a multi-touch back, liquid metal and change in home button. I doubt we'll be seeing those in this upgrade though.

If it makes you feel better. I'm in the same boat.
I've had my iPhone 3G since the first day it came out back in '08. I've skipped the 3GS and 4, and will finally be upgrading.
The iPhone 4 looks tempting, but this is just a test of patience and self-control. Or else you'll be kicking yourself in a few months when the iPhone 5 comes out.

I'd say wait until WWDC. If we don't hear anything about the iPhone 5, then it's safe to presume that the September event will be when the iPhone 5 will be released.

Back to the topic...Being that it was common for each iPhone to be released in June, it's still a possibility that a new model will come along this June as well. There have been tons of reports stating that Apple would wait until Septembers media event to release it, but one can also think that after all the leaking and controversy of the iPhone 4 (i.e. Gizmodo's scandal), they might just be keeping things very tight on location.

Supposed parts have been leaked from manufactures for a new model, much like previous models. The only concrete proof we had of a new model last year was when that test model was left in that bar.

Also, considering that people recently were sent to jail for leaking iPad 2, I am not at all surprised there has not been any iPhone leaks.

Question. If I get an iPhone 4 now, and want to upgrade to the iPhone 5 in a few months how much can I expect to pay? Not the full $199 right?

No I'm talking about the scenario of being in a 2-year contract with Verizon or AT&T, then upgrading to the IP5 a bit later.

After a few months into your contract (not sure exactly how long), you can extend your contract by another 2 years and get an early upgrade for $399/$499. But if you don't qualify for that, you'll have to buy full price.

You can only get $199/$299 once your contract is over or if you open a new line and sign another 2 year contract

Personally, I was thinking the iPhone 5 would not be a big upgrade from the iPhone 4. This thought stems from the iPhone 3GS simply being a faster version of the 3G.

I hope this isn't the case seeing as my upgrade comes January 2012...but still don't know if Verizon iPhone will come out the same time AT&T's come out as well.

I'm running on an LG Env2 back home which utterly sucks.

The 3GS was an amazing upgrade. In fact the only things that didn't change were the screen (although it did get an oleophobic coating) and the external design. People who say it was just a minor improvement have no idea what they are talking about

*facepalm*

I know, I know but all i'm saying is for the everyday user who has never heard of MacRumors or cares about the latest iPhone (..my dad); if he was to have had the 3G, he would've seen no ready to upgrade to the 3GS. Then 2 years after the 3G the 4 comes out which has a whole new redesign, the A4 chip is brand new and a front facing camera.

Even if the new iPhone 5 means the A5 chip like the iPad 2 then i'm sold...but again, thats cause i'm using a whack phone.

I had the 3G and it was slow as molasses. People with the 3GS can somewhat compete with my iPhone 4, but the 3G is no comparison.

Don't give in to the white iPhone, Apple is selling 11 month old technology for the same price. Its quite absurd but they can get away with it because people buy it in droves. Anyway as for the iPhone 5 I would hope that if they release it 16 months later they would change the form factor at least a little bit. In this day and age any technology gets stale looking after a year let alone 16 months, especially the mobile market which is moving rapidly.

How the hell is this absurd? You're forgetting that the majority of the market isn't like us.

People are still buying 3GS's!!!!!! Why? They don't need the latest and greatest. They want an iPhone.

Maybe it would he absurd for an educated macrumors user to buy a 4 now with the prospect of the next generation, but not for everyone.

My dad has had a 3G for 2 years. I used it recently and it is an absolute nightmare. I encouraged him to get a 4 when his upgrade is up, but to wait until after WWDC just to be sure. A 4 would be a night and day difference for him, and make perfect sense. Whether or not it's "11 year old technology," it's still a great phone.

I'm comfortable with my White iPhone 4 and will not spend money on a 5. There should not be that much of an overhaul.

Comments like this make me wish that there is such an overhaul that it'll make you puke that you got a white one so soon to the iPhone 5 release. ;)

My speculation/wishful thinking:

We haven't seen an introduction to iOS 5 because that's the part of the iPhone that's getting the major overhaul. I think what's going to happen is WWDC is going to come around and the next iPhone will be introduced. The phone will be released running iOS 4 and the next iteration will be out in the fall.

The hardware will have some minor upgrades but the revamping of the operating system will be Apple's big ticket item this time around. Due to the leak of the upgraded hardware last year, they're doing their damnedest to make sure nothing gets out.

Again, this is all speculation.

To those on the fence about getting the 4, I'd suggest going for it since WWDC is less than a month away. If that comes and goes and nothing is announced or you're underwhelmed by what's shown, then you can be happy that you had a great phone for the past month and move on. If something big is announced you're still within that 30 day return window and you can still be happy that you had a great phone for the past month. You can't lose! :D

Source? I think the fact he is on medical leave trumps your speculation that he is 'fine'. People who are passionate about what they do don't call in sick unless they are really sick.

Yet he's been spotted numerous times since taking his leave of absence, walking into the Apple HQ in Cupertino to undoubtedly keep tabs on the teams and latest product development.

You're comment about him passing and the next iPhone being his final big announcement is, at best, morbid speculation with absolutely zero basis in fact.

Multitouch back? So Apple can get called out on blatantly copying the NGP?

I'm pretty sure there was a patent leak reported on here a while ago, long before Sony's new toy was announced, that mentioned the use of multitouch gestures on the reverse of a device.

Just saying.
