As a consumer, this phone isn't buying me over.

Business-wise, this is genius. Change the look of an existing device and market it as new, when have I ever seen pre orders for a year old phone? And they've sold it out.

Kinda weird the way people are looking at this.

The 5c is just last year's iPhone 5 in a different case. Lots of parts available and far easier to manufacture. When the iPhone 5 came out last year, nobody was saying the launch was a failure because Apple wasn't sold out of 4S's

It's last year's phone, but made slightly more attractive for upgrade than having it be ACTUALLY last year's phone. Why would anyone expect it to sell out?

Amusingly, the reason people are expecting it to sell out is the reason why it was a good move to "repackage" iPhone 5, people are thinking about it like a new phone. That will get buyers who had already decided to pass on the iPhone 5 last year.

I ordered a 32GB yellow as soon as preorders started. Guess I always pick the popular color!

Why not a 5S for me? I used to be a latest-and-greatest spec whore. I loved the 4S but hated how it felt in my hand - cold, sharp, and boxy. It left me with a hand cramp after a few minutes of use. I skipped the 5 because it looked just like a longer 4.

I jumped on the 4" retina bandwagon with a blue ipod touch 5th gen and wished that the next iPhone would feel like it only warmer and slightly less thin. The 5c seems to be the answer to my prayers.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but the only interest I have in TouchID right now is what the government is going to do with all the free fingerprints....

And doesn't Jonny just seem more happy and bubbly in the video for the 5c as compared to the 5s? :D

All colours and all 16 and 32GB iPhone 5c are available for 20th delivery in Australia - no sell outs. This is to be expected in OZ, since we do follow the trends of the world not US and most new phone buyers are looking for bigger screen rather than colours and minuscule, letterbox size 4" screen phones.

It looks like a nice phone; it just doesn't feel as much of an Apple product, all plastic-y like that. More Apple meets Fisher-Price. But I actually sort of want one, too. As I've learned with cameras, plastic can be very durable, too, and not just cheap and fragile. We shall see...

Man I remember the white ibooks (one of my old G3s is somehow still going strong down the road at a neighbor's house although I cannot imagine what the kid uses it for, the thing seems like doorstop material by now). They were practically indestructible unless you dropped them on a corner on a tile floor or something. I'm sure Apple's plastic tech has only got better by now and it was hard to beat back then. I'm looking forward to my 5C, big time.

Will someone kindly tell me for the people that don't care for the 5c (are hating on it, pretending that it's nothing more than the same model as the 5, saying it's a flop, pretending that they couldn't care less that it even exists) are even here at all? Seems like those people are paid to be here.

The beatings will continue until morale improves? Or No negative opinions will be allowed inside THIS walled garden?

People are disappointed. Expressing their displeasure ensures their voice is heard. If you just want rainbows and unicorns, you could just go over to apple's site and read all the good marketing script there.

All colours and specs still available for 20/9 delivery at Apple UK...folk simply aren't impressed or hyped up enough to buy. Too expensive, Apple.

Simply too expensive for a plastic phone with last years internals. :(
Technically it's the same price as the 5 would be this year if they didn't have the 5C. The problem is Apple for the most part repackaged the 5 and is trying to sell it like it's an all new model.

They also didn't do anything to quiet the cheaper iphone rumors to compete in the China market. I think most people were looking for a $400-450 phone and when that didn't happen you get the backlash they're getting now.

What I find odd is it seems to me that Apple is pushing the 5C more than the 5S

Either Tim uses his logistic management skill quite well. Or because iPhone 5C sells quite poor.

Yeah .. it's gotta be one or the other. You pick one :D

Not really THAT much R&D. Plastic isnt anything special to work with.

Plastic is more involved than you think. Try designing a plastic mold die. A simple prototype die for a small plastic cheap part can run in the 10's of thousands.

What is a flop? Only 2-3 million units sold in the first weekend instead of 5 million? A "flop" for Apple seems like a huge success that other companies could only dream of.

Agreed. 7 hours in and they've sold out of one of the models. Think how many of these they have stockpiled; it's not like Apple has had to transform their manufacturing system from the 5.
I think these will sell quite, quite well.

Yep. And those plastic colors were part of what got Apple into the mainstream again.

Either it was never actually released in Singapore or sold out in an hour flat. I checked it lots of times yesterday and never found any model listed as available. Neither midnight here, midnight west coast, last night nor this morning.

You don't need to be so condescending. People are not just "expressing their displeasure", they are drowning out anyone who has a positive opinion about the product. And thank you for proving my point with your condescending post towards me. I don't think it's truly many that are "disappointed", there a quite a few who've been paid to express their disappointment.
You're amongst the others who seem to want to maintain a hostile environment. This is an Apple Enthusiasts site, not an Apple-hating one.

I agree with you. Does anyone on this forum really believe Apple will sell fewer iphone 5c then the number of 4s sold last year? Does anyone on this forum really believe that Apple will sell fewer 5s than 5 sold last year? No to both questions. So, more happy customers and more revenue for Apple. What's the problem?

You got that right. It seems like Samsung is paying their hate teams overtime to troll all the Apple sites.

Funny thing is, these paid Samsung shills are probably American kids who a're trying to bring down an American company in favor of a foreign one - and then probably complain that there are no good jobs out there. Idiots.

Well, in the end
the 5c is apple's iphone 4 when the 4S came out. I am sure people did not go on a buying spree for the iphone 4 the moment 4S was announced. The sales would be mediocre yet consistent throughout its lifecycle.

Yes, because Apple fans can't be disappointed. Apple fans can't possible express displeasure. Only people paid by Samsung are expressing their dislike for the direction Apple is taking.

WOW!!! RDF in full effect.

I AM an apple fan, I'm not getting paid by Samsung. I've spent LOTS of my hard earned cash on Apple products over the years. I am an apple enthusiast. I have switched my folks, my in-laws, both sister's families, and my brother-in-law to Apple.

Sorry if that bursts your bubble.

The choice is up to the consumer, so definitely, pick what you like and leave the rest behind. I post this primarily to remark that the "existing device" this time around is the freebie or low-cost 8GB 4S. The 5C for whicih pre-orders are being taken is an updated critter with a completely different (and better, imo) construction. Also if you read the spec, you see that there are additional improvements from the 5 to the 5C. And of course the 5S is yet more differentiated from the 5 with the newer chip, cam, fingerprint sensor tech.

It remains to be seen whether offering the 5C and 5S in one cycle (and perhaps going forward with two iPhone tiers) is a brilliant business move. The smartphone market is predictable in some ways and unpredictable in others. Part of its unpredictability definitely has to do with the historically disruptive appeal of Apple's rollouts. Now, the chatter over whether these S-cycle products are especially "new" or not should not override recognition that Apple is adding consumer choice within a cycle to its smartphone line. More disruption!

I doubt that Apple has misjudged its markets and how to position the new models, but again, no one can be sure. Most likely they will laugh all the way to the bank with the 5C. That's my prediction. But I'm biased because I like the 5C and bought one.

As for the 5S, that could be dicier, not least if it's popular but proves difficult to crank out en masse with good build quality, but many people thought Apple stumbled with various aspects of the first gen MacBook Air rollout, and now look at it. Wildly popular, elegant, great performance, much improved. So a first-gen effort is exactly that, and the results need a lot of analysis to see how to go forward. This will be an interesting time the next couple of years with the smartphones!

I don't know where you live in Sydney, as I see most people using iPhones here

Amazingly thick-headed, elitist responses to the existence of a device people aren't forced to buy. Those who do want it are insulted with names like "stupid" questioning anyone's desire to not own the very top of the line iPhone that Apple makes. It all sounds so defensive and childish. Nothing about the 5c should threaten any of you 5s lovers, yet you act like you've been physically assaulted. I really think, more than anything, many of you would like to get the "fun" iPhone 5c but can't bear the thought of possibly being perceived as not "cool" enough if you have that.

Think about this: the 5c is a better option than what Apple likely would have offered as the iPhone 5 entry-level model, which would almost certainly have been a single 8gb model like they always have been. Now we have a less expensive iPhone with usable capacities. How can this be a bad thing? How can this be something to bitch and moan about for, as of this writing, 12 pages?! (And that's not including the other threads that cover this topic, of course.) People, seriously, lighten up. Not everyone wants or needs a fingerprint sensor or the fastest, most bestest smartphone processor the world has ever seen. And, gasp, some people don't really like that hard aluminum shell that is so easy to damage.
