Tap the screen. That "bug" you mentioned is a feature :D
Holy crap, it actually is...lol. Thanks.

And an unrelated sidenote: Having the phone level on a table for 90 minutes in DND mode did actually help. Deviation when flat on the back went from 6° before to 3° now.
Not exactly accurate either but again, it suggests a software issue or at least a possible software fix.

if it's hardware I don't think the fix will be soon, there maybe a software workaround to the hardware problem but that may take time too.

i think the more people ask for replacements/exchanges the more pressure it will put on apple to announce something to stop this madness :)

Well whatever they do will have to be soon as I would imagine that this could hold up the release of the new iPad

Does no-one test these devices before they are signed off for sale?

Mo' features, mo' problems

However, this is surprising as usually the "S" models have the kinks worked out as it is more of an interative upgrade. Stuff happens and nothing is perfect. Apple still relies lots of parts suppliers to assemble this thing.

The more media attention this gets, the better. Apple cares a lot about its reputation so hopefully they will take the right action to fix this in a non-band-aid way.

-3° here...

I just had a second phone call with the support. After explaining my issue - the man i spoke to had not even heared about the problem - he for himself called the internal (next level?) technical support. After a few minutes of waiting, he said that the problem is known to apple and is SOFTWARE related - ios 7 has a bug when reading out the sensor data (or something simmilar...) and that it will be fixed by an upcomming update in the near future. But he couldn't tell exactly when.

Anyways - i think that's good news :)

Yes good news if true, thanks for sharing, but I would be happier with something more official or some specific details e.g. 7.0.3 or the next update?

Hello all,

I am in the UK and this is my first post on this forum. I have been following this thread with interest.

I have a 16GB space grey 5S (week 39, C3). My phone reads -3 laying flat, -1 on long side (volume buttons to top) and +2 standing on base. I have checked this a few times on several surfaces and these readings appear to remain consistent.

My iPhone 5 registers 0 in all of the above. I do hope that this is corrected soon. In the mean time I am considering returning my 5S to the Apple store within the 14 day period and buying again once this is fixed.

Yep, this is the best thing to do. If Apple aren't going to give any feedback then they don't deserve your trust.

Maybe they will fix it in a couple of weeks. Or maybe you will end up with a phone that all future fitness/navigation/game apps warn about not being fully supported.

Yep that's what I did. Apple will get my money again once they have the decency to make an announcement acknowledging the problem and explain what they are going to do to fix it

good plan, return for refund or exchange for a new retail unit that will buy you another 14 days and u might get a good one.
anyway you have an iPhone 5, clean it up, stick in a new 5s case, with iOS 7 it will feel new for a few weeks. then see what's what.

I have a replacement due tomorrow , using the express replacement service. If the new one is still not right (which is most likely going to be the case) can I still return it to the Apple store where I purchased the original phone from and get a refund?

don't think u can return for refund if the serial number of handset (the refurb :) ) doesn't match the serial number of the box.

I maybe wrong as this is an apple store point of purchase, but if say u had bought from cfw, had a genius replacement then went back to cfw for refund within the 14 u will be denied as the phone does not match the box.

Actually you can. As long as the serial number on the box matches your original purchase then you can still get a refund on a white box replacement. This is at a UK retail store though

Ok, thanks for the info.

Regarding the 'refurb', as you didn't answer me in the other thread, i'll ask again here..

Where did you get the info that the replacement 5s handsets supplied in the white boxes are refurbished and not built on the same production line as the 'retail' 5s handsets.

I'm after facts here not opinion, I would genuinely like to know.

i read somewhere in apple documentation when I was looking to replace an iPad 2 that "warranty replacements could be refurbished units" or something to that effect I tried finding it for you earlier but couldn't be bothered to look too much.
Also when I spoke to apple care on the phone last week and they offered me the warranty replacement I asked if it was new, the said it is "as new" I pushed the question again I could not get more than the "as new"

where did you get the info that they are of the same production line? as far as I am aware they have different serial number prefix's?

My 5s exhibits the problems stated by this thread :(. Tilt in games is the most annoying, where there is no calibrate option

My concern is that if it is a hardware problem, do we have a full year warranty to return as faulty or is it best to tell Apple as early as possible ?

so if your point of purchase is an apple store you can still return a replace be for a refund within the 1st 14.
same if u buy online from apple?
thanks for the info.

Ok so it looks as if Apple will be announcing the new iPads on the 22nd. Hopefully that means there won't be the same gyroscope issues and it means they have a solution

hopefully this is fixed soon!

i'm holding off until apple fix it. if they don't fix it then I'll just pass up on the 5S. I'm sorry but I'm not paying £629 for a device that doesn't work correctly.

yeah this is apple's policy. buy it from their retail or online store and you have 14 days in which to return it for a full refund with no questions asked even if the product has been opened and used. of course you can only return it to where you bought it. you can't buy online and return to a store.

I don't see the co-relation they are probably already making the new iPads, even if the have the issue, they will still announce them and sell them and when people call about the issue the support guys will still be surprised to hear about it :)

we are talking about returning a warranty replacement unit.

cheers.

You read somewhere that an iPad 2 may be replaced by a refurbished unit... that's a bit flimsy evidence to go stating that the iPhone 5s service units are also refurbished don't you think?

My info that they were produced on the same production line came from the guy at Applecare who organised my replacement. I asked if they were refurbished, he said for legal reasons they have to call them 'as new' but in reality there is no difference to a 'retail unit' and they were simply seperated into different boxes at the end of the line.

Now i'm not saying this is the gospel truth as this is the same guy who told me I was the first to call in with the level sensor issue but on the grounds of probability I believe the handsets are produced on the same line. That would surely be the cheapest way for Apple to build them , rather than have a seperate line somewhere building them from parts taken out of old phones or dismantled QC rejects.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just noticed a mistake in my first post, my phone is a week 38 rather than 39...I don't think it makes a difference though.

I only purchased it last Friday, I'll take it back to the Apple store on Saturday. It's such a shame as the space grey looks amazing and I have already become accustomed to the fingerprint reader. It's an absolutely beautiful phone and is perfect in all other respects.

I'll revert to my trusty black iPhone 5 for a few more weeks and hope this gets fixed.

I absolutely love Apple and always buy their latest iPhone and iPad each year. It would have been nice if they had issued some kind of statement.

the bit I read was talking about iPhone iPads and iPods.
if your refurb arrives tomorrow with a C3 or a DN prefix serial number then I may agree :)

Just to add more variety in regards to serial numbers

Both my original iPhone 5 and my current 5s had C3 serial numbers,

I had to get my iPhone 5 replaced and the serial number was C7
