I'm in the same boat with my gyro off by -4.

I did want to comment and ask if this is the cause of the stutter in dynamic wallpapers and parallax effect.

I saw a separate thread on the lag/stutter on the dynamic wallpapers and was thinking this could be the culprit?

Anyways, I'm hoping this can be corrected through a software update.

We're all hoping that. I wish there was some kind of acknowledgement and proposed software fix from Apple. I think I have like 14 days from the date of purchase to return my iPhone if I don't want it...and if it turns out this thing is a hardware issue, I certainly don't want it.

Not sure what to do...wait until the very last possible day to return it hoping that later builds are better?? Keep it and just hope there's a future software fix so my Sky Walk horizon is level?

"You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it. For an Apple iPhone, you have 30 calendar days. "

I'm going to hope this gets resolved in software, or that the Genius Bar can calibrate it for you with some tools from Apple.

I have the same issue and I guess it's more complex than a simple software bug... The factory restore didn't works... If it's just a software problem, the factory restore should work.
I replaced 2 iPhone 5s in apple store. Two of them were good when I got them. One of them had the -4 degree when I turned it on the first time. But The two good one had about -4 degree tilt several days later... Therefore, the ones which are good now, may have this issue later someday...

Hmm, that's very interesting. If the sensor or the reading deteriorates over time, I can think of a few incidences where it could be doing that:

1) The chip is defective batch and gradually deteriorates over time
2) The software reading the chip is defective and it constantly tries to recalibrate using a poor balance.

Has it gotten worse than -4 degrees over time? I have bumped my iphone lighter to see if it's the gyroscope/accelerometer not seated properly inside the iphone, but the reading remains off.

Anyway, good news, Best Buy got my replacement iPhone (new) in, so I will be picking it up tonight. Fingers crossed that it's 0 degrees in all the readings when flat!

I emailed Tim about this and today got and email and call from a corporate executive relations person that works directly with Tim he says. They are interested in the issue and he has contacted the senior manager at the Apple store in SF and I have an appointment to replace the phone (mine will go to Cupertino) and he will follow up with me via a call this afternoon.

I explained to him that this is a widespread issue happening to most of the 5S's. I told him I have already had 1 replacement and it was about the same maybe a little better but had loose power button and made a strange sound when vibrating. I asked him why Apple cannot just check some of the devices there and he dodged the question saying they want to exchange it. He said if the replacement does it in the store they still have to take my phone and I have to take the replacement anyway. I don't know why they can't take send the replacement to Cupertino if it does the same thing which I am almost positive it will. They can even take a floor model as most for them do it.

Im frustrated at this point as I do not want to play the iPhone lottery just to get a phone with the same issue and maybe something else. I also have a nice screen protector on it. When I meet the manager I am going to show him the issue and the floor models and explain to him my frustration about exchanging the phone.

What would you do? Should I be very reluctant esp if I can prove they pretty much all do it?

Wow, that's great that they actually responded to your email. If my 2nd replacement from Best Buy still do it, I will do the same.

I would definitely go in and let them take the phone in exchange for a brand new phone. I presume if you can show them that over 1/2 of the phone on the floor are defective or exhibiting non-balanced behavior, you should be able to get them to exchange one that doesn't not have the issue for you.

If he insists on the exchange I am going to insist I don't leave the store until I get one that is correct. If he says I only get 1 shot Ill probably pass. From what I can tell its more like 80-90% with the issue.

My luck ill get a worse off phone and a gift card with Miley Cirrus songs on it for my trouble. yuk.

I went in to the Apple store here in Columbus and randomly picked three of the 5S floor models. They were -3, -3, -5. Talked to one of the employees who hadn't heard about it. He pulled his out, and his was -3. Told him how it basically appeared to be almost all 5Ss. I'm not worrying about it for now, but hopefully they have a fix in a month or two...then we can either get it calibrated properly, or, if by that time they have a hardware fix out, get my phone exchanged. I'm not going to bother with a repair or replacement now, as I know the replacement will be off too.

I'm not really sure what would make someone think this is a hardware and not software issue. If they're all off by some amount, can't math just be done to correct for however much it's off?

But why does that matter? You just set the calibration rule to start with whatever the individual phone's "offness" is, right?

Most apps don't let you set 0. And the Apple compass app doesn't remember what zero is after you close it out.

I got a call back from the senior advisor I spoke to on Monday. I was told not to exchange my device since that would not address my issue. The engineering team are aware of the issue and a software update is forthcoming. He left this message on my answering machine, so I'll be sure to reference it down the line. So we'll see...

I went to the Apple store and met with the manager as requested by the Apple exec to Tim. I showed him the floor models and they were the same as mine about -3. He checked at the genius bar and they have replaced a couple of phones with the same issue and the replacements were the same. I elected not to swap my phone. Im just going to hold off for Apple to resolve the issue. They are very much aware of it at this point.

^This is not what I mean. More like, Apple adds a one-time startup process (like for the fingerprint), where you place the device first on it's face. Then flipped on its back, then each side. Once you do this, it orients itself.

This is similar to the calibration process used for in-car-apps like Dynolicious. Doesn't seem to be that a hardware fix is the only answer.

I sense a "Recall" is coming up...would be a big fail.

Not sure how apple will spin it though, they could just keep it quiet and not use the term "recall" but announce a general notice.

Can someone shed light as to where were these devices produced? I thought apple used separate manufacturers this time (Foxconn, China and someone else in Brazil), is it just one manufacturer which screwed it up or were the original A7 processors shipped from samsung screwed up? What do you guys think?

Recall of 10 million devices is a huge undertaking, they just need to update the app so that it remember the calibration.

Went by the a Apple store on my way home today. Every 5S model I looked at on the display table was off by anywhere from 1 to 8 degrees...and I checked a dozen of them.

I spoke with the guy booking reservations for tech support and he said "Oh, I have not heard of any kind of gyroscope issue". I'm always amused by this line...they use it all the time! Would be fun to have a friend walk in afterward and ask the technician the same question...I'll bet the Apple rep would again say "oh, that's the first I've heard about that issue"!

I cannot believe they don't read the same websites we all do. Surely they would be aware of this issue.

At any rate he felt that a software update would likely be in the works if it was as prevalent as I demonstrated.

Sure. But it would need to be set at the system level. I'm not sure that's a very Apple-like thing to do...

This might be a software problem...my compass app shows -2 or -3. However, I have this old gyroscope app that I got when the iPhone 4 came out and under "roll" it says 0. This is on my 5s. It says 0 on my 5 as well.

Got to compare to a friend's iPhone 5s. I ordered mine online on launch day and he bought his at a Verizon store on launch day.

Both on a restaurant table:
Mine: -1
His: -5
