Just had a 5S with a screen that would pop out on the corners. I had -1 on all sides of the phone

I got it replaced at the apple store and my level nows reads 0 on all sides, maybe -1 on one of them. and my screen is perfect. and my sleep/wake button doesn't rattle anymore either. its a solid phone now!

I didn't read the whole thread so sorry if this is redundant...

I'm not too concerned about the level. I don't think I'd ever use that. However, the compass is off by several degrees. And it makes me calibrate every time I open it.

Yeah mine with the issues does that too.

I have an appt tomorrow hopefully they'll simply replace and no more compass/gyro/parallax issues and no more rattling power button. We shall see... :apple:

Why does EVERY apple hardware launch have something wrong.
I imagine apple will do a silent fix for this as it's not a fault most will recognise.
I am going to let apple know about my fault with this but I will wait until they fix the problem and know what it is.
I can't be bothered dealing with the usual genius reply that they have not seen this before.
I am hoping for a new for new replacement though when it happens.

For what it's worth this is not something specific to Apple or any other company.

It's the nature of technology, nothing is ever 'perfect'.

I had a chat session with Apple support and the agent advised my to reset all settings, turn on DND, put it to sleep, let charge for at least 90 minutes. The agent advised not to move the phone at all during this time because it is recalibrating the gyroscope during this time. I'll post back with the results.

This has been tried already.
You're wasting your time.

I have a 4s, no 5/5S yet but I must say that since IOS7 every time i open the compass i have to recalibrate it, don't recall it being this way before..perhaps it is software related or are you supposed to recalibrate every time you open the compass app?

It's been >90mins. Did it work for you?

This doesn't work. Been tried many times. Best thing to do is just wait until:

1. Apple silently fixes the issue and 99% of the new ones do not have this issue the swap.
2. Apple releases a software update that has some sort of auto calibration built in.

Im not going to bother swapping mine out and deal with the screen protector not to mention possible getting one with some other issue that cannot be fixed via hardware such as scanlines, loose power bottom, rattle, chipped paint etc.
Right now I don't depend on the accelerometer/gyro but would like it fixed on my $850 device because it worked properly on previous models.

As far as the compass, I do the the figure 8 calibration or just wave it around it is calibrates far better the the built in ball around the circle

I think there is a simple way to see if this is a calibration/software error or a more serious hardware thing.
If it's calibration, then the values should be constantly off nomatter what angle. Say, for a flat surface it has a -4 error, then for a 45 degree surface it should read 49 (or 41) and so on. The compass should exhibit the same behavior.
Can you guys run some tests and see if this is the case?

I have access to a digital smart level. I will see about running some tests at various degrees today and post the results.

Any updates?

Has anyone just tried zeroing the level by touching the screen at whatever orientation the iphone is?

What does this accomplish? The sensor is still off....

If I touch the screen while trying to use the phone as a level, how will I know if my surface is level?

Went to the Apple store today for a different issue and found that the 5 or 6 5s's I looked at ranged from -1 to -2, one gold one was dead set at 0. I found that most 5c's were -1 too, for comparison my 5s shows -5 on the same table. It's also a bit unexpected because it's a launch day iphone (got in around 8am) from the same store. I actually thought that it would have been pulled from the same batch.

Yah, apple does that with macbook air's as well, they show off the samsung LCD ones on store displays which have amazing color saturation while shipping you LG screens.

I am sure they got the internal memo regarding this hardware issue, so they are displaying only the ones which have close to level 0.

Just on with Apple...

This is an issue that's being looked into further by Apple. What I'll need to do in this case is get you in touch with one of our senior advisors over the phone, so they can submit a trouble ticket to our engineers.

Just on with Apple...

Well, just off the phone with 'Senior Support Engineer'
Told to restore as new device and leave for 90m in DnD on flat surface ...

Will humour him since i both have a case-number with them and the engineers direct dial extension number to follow up with.

Not holding out any hope that this action plan will resolve issue

Gawd this is annoying. They must have some incorrect service bulletin as this absolutely does not work. If you ask me these senior support engineers are probably just customer service reps probably answering phones in an OKC call center reading canned scripts. You would have a better chance conjuring up some fairies and have them wave their magic wands. Now it would be nice if the phone could do some sort of auto calibration but at this point it does not.

There is another rumor that Apple engineers are aware of this and a software fix is coming. I am hoping on that one. The only suspect here IMHO is the M7 chip. The previous devices didn't have it and they were 99% "0". According to the latest polls the average is about 3 to 4 degrees off. I cant imagine the circuit boards/chips being that crooked in these devices as it is very similar to the 5 and there is not much room inside the device. The 1/4" or more I have to lift mine up from one side to 0 it would mean a pretty crooked board possible sticking outside the case.

highlightshadow,

When you follow up with him will you please tell him this information is incorrect. Multiple users have tried this and it does absolutely nothing.

Either Apple is going to fix this in a software update or a quiet calibration fix from the factory. I just don't think 99% of the population understands/uses these features and even cares.

Absolutely ... sounds like an issue with calibration of m7.... since a gyro and accelerometers are relative devices (plenty of experience with RC Heli gyros) the calibration is purely software

Assuming the compass is correct (magnetometer) and its just a display issue again then i'm confident given the widespead (seeming anecdotal) impact it can't be a hardware recall ... that'd be chaos.

Seems to be a retention problem... if i run RealRacing 3, i can do a calibrate in there to get it level but the next time i come back into the game its gone again.

The apps/games that don't have independent calibration are the ones that are most knackered (including apples own inbuilt ones)
