Clearly you don't understand. That's ok. :) If you want to believe your phone being 1 degree off is like an alarm clock being an hour off, go right ahead.

Either way it's not correct which make a difference so the analogy works.

The only difference is YOU don't use apps that require the accelerometer to work correctly, but apparently do use the alarm. If you did use the accelerometer, then you'd realize there's no difference.

Absolutely I use my accelerometer. I was one of the very first people to report this issue, if you bothered perhaps researching my post history. However, 1 degree makes pretty much ZERO degrees of difference in 99.9% of apps. For that 0.1% of apps where having 0 degrees is CRITICAL, you wouldn't be using a phone anyway.

Agreed. I'm pretty happy with the fix as all the apps I use now work exactly the way they should just like my previous iPhones. Mine may be 0.4 to 0.6 degrees off on its back and the iPhone built in level app rounds to the nearest whole number so I average 0 to -1 on its back. Im not going to use the phone to build a bowling alley and if I do I will use it on its side as that is pretty close to 0.0 :). I just wanted it to work as advertised and as well as my previous iPhones and it does that now after the update.

I had to have my iPhone 5s replaced because it decided to crap out today. My replacement has 7.0.3 and is -3 on the back! 0 on bottom side.

I spoke to Apple today and I was told that 7.0.3 fixed the problem. If it's not fixed a hardware swap is needed. I have a GB appointment for tomorrow as not only is my level off by 2, but my front camera is off center.

I went to the Apple stores in Hong Kong, Anchorage and New York and none of the iPhones on display were showing a correct reading when compared to my 'old' Iphone 4S.

Every one of the 5S's on display showed 1-2 degrees off when I placed them on top of my iPhone (which showed level on the table). I had to lay the 5S on top of my iPhone because of the anti-theft device attached to the back of the 5S.

So either Apple doesn't know how to buy a table that is level, my iPhone is off, or the 5S still has a problem!

When confronting some of those 'geniuses' who work there, I got the usual vague replies: first denying that there even was a problem, and second that 7.0.3. 'fixed' the problem. When I showed them the comparison between my 4S and the 5S on display, they would just vaguely ask if "there was anything else they could help me with" and walk away and greet the next customer/sucker with the usual fake: "hiiiii, how can I help you..."

Again, for all the Apple apologists out there, how come that an old iPhone is more accurate than a brand new $849,- (!) iPhone?

p.s. no iPhones were available anyway for purchase and those Apple 'geniuses' can't even tell when or if a shipment is coming in, or what's inside this shipment. Hello?! Track & trace...? Amazing that a business as big as Apple has such a lousy logistic system in place that they don't even know have a rough idea of how they will supply their stores...

Did it ever occur by your tone that they did know, but just wanted you out of their store as quickly as possible?

Oh absolutely, they don't like difficult questions and facts like Antenna-gate, they prefer hype and dumb suckers!

I have nothing against Apple (I own a 4S and a MBA) and I was looking forward to a 5S, but it's scary how this brand is becoming a cult-like status.

If an Apple 'genius' tells me that 1+1=3 and when I question that, then they suddenly want me out of the store a.s.ap.? Hahaha, welcome to the USSR/North Korea!

When you said they don't know anything about the next shipment was this in all Apple Stores or just the ones in Hong Kong?

In Hong Kong normal Apple employees aren't privileged to shipment information because due to the high resell value, this is to prevent them ringing their friends to horde stock or to have them line up in front of the stores causing chaos.

The HK store was the only honest one IMHO, because they just admitted that you had to order it online.

I was mainly talking about the US stores I visited, where the sales people obviously get their sales training from watching "MTV's The Pick-up Artist" and were desperately playing 'hard to get' and 'mysterious.' :)

hahahahahha

both of my phones are from "F2" factory...
anyone else with F2 phones? how are your guy's phones? gyro? battery life??
just asking cuz mine are in transit to me. lol

7.0.3 fixed mine to exactly 0 on all sides. It was -4 before the update. I never use the level anyway though.

Hi All,

I hope this is my last post. Here's the latest:

1. I decided to do a statistical analysis with my students. We gathered all the iPhone 5S's (15 in total, counting the 3 I own). The plan was to create a laboratory grade level surface (which we can do) and then plot the level readings of all the phones. 15 phones doesn't make for a lot of data. But it was all we had.

2. The statistical analysis was a "failure." That is, all the phones read Level Green when placed on the level surface. All but ONE! MINE! Yep, just one. All were running iOS 7.0.3. All did NOT read level before upgrading. Mine was still off by 1 degree, which I have said is not satisfactory for several of the astronomy apps used in my classes. Conclusion...It really does appear that iOS 7.0.3 is a true fix for many iPhone 5S's.

3. I called Apple Care Experts. I explained in detail all the steps I had taken to bring my iPhone up to snuff and relayed the results of my classroom experiment. The Apple Care person was, I believe, impressed with my tenacity. :) She also said that I had done all the troubleshooting and had performed all the fixes they would have suggested. She therefore set up a Genius Bar appointment for me at my local Apple Store. She included a summary of my situation for the Genius so that they would know that there was nothing more to do except exchange my phone for a new one.

4. I received my new iPhone 5S yesterday. I decided to set it up as a new phone. THEN I restored it from the computer backup I had made just before going to the Apple Store.

5. Result. My new iPhone reads dead on level when placed on a dead on level surface.

6. Problem solved. Great Apple customer service.

I hope this is some help to those who have not found satisfaction with iOS 7.0.3

Mr. Luigi

Another great post Mr. Luigi!

My 5s (ordered 19th September, Delivered 1st October) was 1 degree off short edge and on its back (i.e. one of the better ones pre-7.0.3). I had an open incident with Apple over the problem, and they agreed to extend my return window to 30 days (i.e. today).

7.0.3 initially fixed the problem (zeros on both sides and the back). But after a day or so the values had drifted off again, this time long edge and back off a degree. Like you, I use astronomy apps, and I agree this is unsatisfactory. So this morning I phoned the online store yet again and sorted the return.

I have a new 5s ordered, currently showing delivery 22-28 Nov, but the online sales guy said he should be able to get this reduced by a couple of weeks. Based on your study, it looks like I have a 14:1 chance I will get a 5s without the gyroscope problem. Fingers crossed, and you will find me back in the UK iPhone 5s and 5c Thread as I keep refreshing the Check order status page on apple.com - just like old times:rolleyes:

iPhone 5s accelerometer/gyroscope/compass values incorrect

I went to the Apple Store today for a GB appointment. The guy seemed somewhat annoyed that I was there for an accelerometer issue since it was fixed. He asked me if I did the calibration for several hours. I said I did. He checked my AppleCare case where the person recommended a phone swap. I'm not sure he would have done it if He hadn't looked and saw the phone reported 89 degrees in a right angle.

Anyway he asked if I wanted to do a "one time" swap, meaning if the new phone had the same problem he wouldn't swap again. I did. He have me a white box replacement which was actually even older than my current phone (week 36 as opposed to week 38). After updating it to 7.0.3, it reported 0 on all sides and 1 on the back, but the table wasn't completely level. I tested this with a bubble level I brought to the store. The phone read 0 when the bubble's on the bubble level were dead center and the phone how correctly knows there are 90 degrees in a right angle, so I'm happy. Though I think the home button is noisier than my old phone. It works, but makes a clack sound unless I press it gently.

The guy said my old phone had "minor scratches" on the back and sides, which makes no sense since it was in Apple's case and I didn't notice any scratches (unless it scratched taking it out of the case). That and the fact that the phone is actually 2 weeks older than mine (same factory), makes me wonder if it's a refurb.

If the replacement phone came in a white box and is a week 36, does that mean it's a refurb?

I'm back. But, everything is still ok 24 hours later. No drift. I actually am posting with information about my first 5S (that iOS 7.0.3 did not fix) and the replacement I received yesterday (that is still spot on and showing Delicious Green).

Production Week:

Original - 36
Replacement - 38

Factory:

Original - C3 (China)
Replacement - DN (China, Chengdu - Foxconn)

OK, that's it.

Mine new one is still off by 1 on the back when level, but I think it's really about 0.6, rounding up to 1. All the sides are 1.
One thing that's a bit troubling is that the green doesn't exactly match up with the line in the center of the screen, meaning the pitch is off.

Also both iTunes and my iPhone locked up at the end of the sync after the restore. My new iPhone actually blue screened (panic crashed) when I tried to run the settings app while iTunes was stuck. My original iPhone 5S also panic crashed when I originally restored it from my 4S backup. Not sure what that means. Probably an iOS 7 bug.

Edit:

I checked the logs folder on my PC after syncing and I saw there was a "power log" synced with a recorded date of about 30 minutes prior to my appointment. I looked at the log and it showed a bunch of apps like AppGenius and the like. It looks like the Genius guy just grabbed a phone they were testing and put it in a white box and gave it to me. That means it's definitely refurbished.

Am I the only one experiencing my screen actually jitterying/shaking / becoming unresponsive - only being cleared up by shutting the screen off/on? wth.

Was the unit you received in a shrink wrapped white box?

Was the unit you received in a shrink wrapped white box?

They didn't give me the box. They just gave just me a phone, but they took it out of a white box. There was no shrink wrap on the box, but the phone had the 2 plastic screen protectors that Apple puts on it. I can see from the sync logs that it was being used/tested earlier in the day so if it was shrink wrapped the Apple guys would have removed it. I'm hoping they were just verifying it worked or something, but even that is odd, especially since the log was about 30 minutes prior to my appointment and survived an erase all content reset. Other than the initial blue screen crash at the end of the first sync, it seems to be working.

On a side note, the "genius" didn't seem that bright and had a kind of dickish attitude. He told me Apple recommends that iPhone's be rebooted several times a week to prevent crashes when he saw a Springboard crash in the logs of my old phone. He also said the level being off by 1 is normal. He only did the replace when he saw that putting the phone on it's side, resetting the level and then turning it 90 degrees cause the phone to read 89. I still think he didn't want to.

Status summary of gyro problem

I just found this forum while trying to find out if as of this date the iPhone 5s gyro problem has been fixed both with the hardware and software. If only by the 7.0.3 software, is this a complete fix. An ancillary question is what is the best way to obtain the 5s so as to boost the probability of getting one that works properly? Through Verizon (my carrier), via the Apple store on line or via the internet?

Thanks, Paul

I have a feeling you were probably being a jerk about it. just a guess though. Don't forget that they are customer service reps, not engineers. Apple definitely knows what phones are coming in and when, doesn't mean they have to tell you...or the employees.

Before the 7.0.3 update, 5s phones were, on average, 3 degrees off level (source). After 7.0.3, the majority of 5s phones now report zero degrees (source and source).

So 7.0.3 seems to have fixed the problem for most people. However, some still reported problems after 7.0.3, suggesting a hardware fault or inaccurate base calibration data for these iPhones. Mine is in this category so I returned it for a refund and I have ordered a replacement.

I'm getting my new 5s from Apple as they have a no-quibble returns policy. I have placed an online order with Apple.com which has the 2-3 week prediction for when it will ship. In the mean time I will check my local Apple Stores when I get chance. If they have stock I will get one there and cancel the online order.
