TRUE! Sorry. My Bad. (The directions for 2-step calibration are not worded clearly in the app. But, I should talk!) Mr. Luigi

TRUE! Sorry. I'm clearly having a bad day.  Mr. Luigi

(iHandy Carpenter does NOT provide 2-step calibration. 1 right. 2 wrong. I still Fail.)

If you guys want a really good app that will tell the true level of your phone to 0.1 degree try gyrolevel. You can't calibrate it so it will tell you the true results of you accelerometer/gyro as calibrated by Apple.

The built in level app rounds to the nearest 1 degree. Gyrolevel measures 1/10 of a degree. The back of my phone registers 1 in most position and occasionally 0 when I rotate it with the built in app. With gyrolevel I'm averaging 0.5 on its back. Its even a little better then my iPad. Don't expect 0.0 vertical and 0.0 horizontal as I have never gotten that with any phone and living in SF the earth has shifted enough that nothing is perfectly level to that degree.

Excellent!!! We can now hear people complain about being 0.3 off. Just what we wanted.

Does anyone know the faulty batch serials?

I just ordered mines, I know the patch should fix it even if I have a faulty model.
But would still like to know then it arrives if it was from the old batch with the defect or not.

Anyone know what serials are for the faulty ones?

I don't think the issue was isolated to a certain batch. It affected pretty much nearly every 5S device. Yeah, there were people reporting their 5S was showing 0's on flat surfaces but they were in a very small minority.

7.0.3 has fixed (or improved) the issue. It's sorted now as far as most people are concerned. I was holding off buying a 5S because of this issue and I'll be picking mine up today. My advice: don't worry about it. Just update your phone and enjoy it. If you're not happy with it for any reason then get a replacement or refund.

Hm....

So I was able to get 0s after I updated, did factory reset, and 90-min DND. I checked to see if the DND did anything so I did a factory reset and it showed 3 degrees off on a flat surface. After DND (just checked), it showed up with all 0s. With that in mind, DND does work or something within that process is doing its thing to offset the wrong values.

There are no 'faulty ones'. The problem is the way ios was handling the data coming from the sensors.

The latest update isn't masking some hardware fault, it simply does a better job of calculating the massive amount of raw data which comes front the phones various sensors.

Whether if it was or not faulty, it is fixed (or mostly from what people are saying) and that is all that should matter. Download and update, and check values. If they are still wrong, do a factory reset and delete everything and then do the 90-min DND. Yes, I have done the reset and DND thing. It does work as I did it last night.

I got my 5s yesterday, updated iOS and compared the compass to my 3 year old iphone 4. They show a difference of about 20° when being placed in the exact same orientation. How do I find out if my iphone 4 or my 5s is wrong? Can I take it to an apple store and have them check it for me?

place both of them on their back on a flat surface. obviously it should read 0. 20 is crazy.

The compass is always wrong. It's also affected by metal objects near by. So if you put your phones next to each other they will affect the readings.

The compass is never accurate in any of the iPhones I have owned.

It's the accelerometer. One sensor.

But since the update mine is actually working. I am happy now no matter what even if it is masking something wrong. It still works how I expect it to.

The update totally fixed the issue on my iPhone 5S. It seems to account for the slight slant created by the side with the power/volume switch buttons and report 0 degrees as well for those sides! :D

Can you please clarify how you did your "factory reset"? Did you use the "Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content"? Or did you connect to iTunes and use "Restore", then disconnect the phone before restoring the backup?

And how did you enable DND? Did you use control center, or did you do it through Settings? And how much other "setup" had you done on the phone before doing the DND procedure?

I ask because I have been unsuccessful in getting mine to calibrate less than 1º off, even after 7.0.3 and multiple attempts at "Restore" and "DND 90 minutes". So maybe I'm doing it wrong -- and I would like to try the process that was successful for you.

While just over 1º isn't a huge problem, it is still enough to be annoying in the Star Walk app so if there is a way to get it calibrated closer to zero I would like to try again.

After installing 7.0.3, I did a reset where it erased all content (Apps, Music, everything). After it did its job and showed the "Hello" screen, I went through the process of setting up my phone. Oh and make sure to plug the phone in. After I did all that and it came to my home screen, I swiped from the bottom of the screen going up (shows the menu with wifi, bluetooth, music player, ect). In that pull-up screen, I clicked on the moon icon. I turned off the screen (DO NOT TURN OFF PHONE) and left the phone on a flat surface for 90 minutes. I did this process over the night while I slept, so I would advise you to do it too unless if you have extra time. Either way, that should work. Let me know if there are still problems. Just make sure that the phone is plugged in to the charger and has the moon thing, or the Do Not Disturb.

iOS 7.0.3 is a poison pill:

It fixes the accelerometer but forces you into iCloud syncing for contacts and calendars--no more USB syncing via iTunes.

For many folks, iCloud sync won't fly for client confidentiality and IT security reasons. See:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1658356/

Shen 7.0.3 came out i dfu restored to that version then set up as new and synced with itunes as normal.

I dont think the new version of ios forcing cloud sync, it is the new version of osx.

ios 7.0.3 did reduce my battery life by 20% ish on the same settings.

Hey guys. I'm experiencing extreme jitters on my iPhone 5S sometimes (randomly). No particular thing I'm doing to cause it. Just using my phone, in a folder or within an app, and the screen starts shaking quickly/shortly back and forth.

Other times the screen is unresponsive and I'm pressing on things.

Other times I'm in Safari and scrolling up and down and all of a sudden my scroll swipes turn into zoom in and soon out (pinch).

This is corrected by turning my screen off and on, however is very very annoying.

Any advice?

Btw on the compass it's -1 degree laying flat on a table. 0 degrees on its sides; this is a 32GB 5S space gray, I've updated it to 7.0.3, and have tried hard reset / reset all settings.

1 degree is normal. Is your table 100% level? Tested using a calibrated tester or bubble level?

Been through this twice now, hoping it would help. I think I may now have a large bag of snipes, but nothing else for my trouble.

To be clear, I had a little more than 3 degrees of error on 7.0.2. After upgrade to 7.0.3, it is just over 1 degree. That is tolerable, but still annoying when using Star Walk as the horizon is noticeably off-level.

After "Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content" and "Setup As New", the error is unchanged (still just over 1 degree). After putting it into DND and charging for more than 90 minutes, the error is still unchanged (still just over 1 degree).

This is the same experience as when I connected to iTunes and used "Restore" to fully restore new firmware, then disconnected and setup as new. Still 1 degree off. And after 90 minutes of DND, still 1 degree off.

So if the DND-90-minute procedure really does anything, with or without a Reset and with or without a firmware Restore, it sure doesn't do it for my phone! Oh well, it was worth a try and maybe I can cook up some of those snipes for dinner.

After resetting it and turning on DND, do not do anything. Just go straight to turning on DND from the swipe up menu thingy. Dont check anything, dont click anything else. Though I doubt it would do so much but just after setting it up new and it comes to your home screen, turn on DND in the menu (NOT IN SETTINGS) that you swipe up. And leave it alone on a leveled surface on the charger. Don't click any apps or anything else before or after turning on DND until 90 minutes is up. Again, try during the night or when you plan to sleep or whatever. I wish Apple would just add a calibration tool so we can set it ourselves.

Two of my sides is still off by 2. I'm going to get it replaced when I get a chance.
