Amazing numbers. It's hard to believe sales could keep almost doubling every year. I can't wait to see the number sold after the first month.

"This is our best iPhone launch yet"

No one saw that coming.

I guess a few people are surprised; probably the same people that claimed Apple artificially restricted supply in order to increase demand.

One does not sell 9 million phones over a weekend by restricting supply.

Not surprised really, these are the best iPhones Apple has ever made and put them back out in front of the competition again. Just wish I didn't have to wait to get my hands on a 5s.

So, your saying they were behind before this launch. Well, lets take your theory. The 5c is the 5 with color case and maybe a few tweaks to make it marginally better then last years 5. The 5s, what did you guys get. A better flash, A7 (64 bit), dedicated Motion Chip, a 15% better camera and Touch ID sensor. Everyone can get or got iOS 7.

I am not sure they really are back in front. They still lack the large screen iPhone that the others are selling and that loyal iPhone users are requesting and have been for a few years now. Where is NFC? Still not in the iPhone. iOS7 is still iOS. So, they gave you a new "Control Center" and they refreshed the looks of their Icons. But, what really is innovating about the OS that has basically been the same since it's original release?

Now, don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone 5 and yes, I will probably get the iPhone 5s...maybe, if I can get enough for my iPhone 5 to cover the cost for the upgrade. But I don't agree that it's on top again. Still lacks where others have taken off in and now another year behind them. So, I would say it's still a neck and neck race to who has the best smart phone on the market.

They didn't almost double. At least 7 million vs 9 million.

The thing is, they'll never give you the satisfaction. They'll ignore their comments last week, and instead keep attacking, some nonsense like 'TouchID broken by people taking a mold of someone's finger'.

Agreed

It would be really interesting to know those figures...

I agree. I guess my point to asking the question was the fact that in the past the "flagship" new phone sales figures always got announced separately. Technically, the 5C is a new phone, but to be real we're comparing it with the last year model when it comes to sales.

Did Apple bunch the 4S sales in with the 5 sale on opening weekend last year? Don't know. Just asking. If not, I'm wondering whether stripping away 5C sales would remove 5S sales from the "record breaking" realm.

It's a little like comparing Apples (no pun intended) to oranges. But it would be interesting to see.

Agreed. Given the stories I've read about the lack of gold and silver 5S iPhone, I didn't expect this high of a number sold.

Neither did I expect that many. I didn't really think about it, but if I had to guess prior to this announcement I'd have guessed maybe 5 million.

It is great weekend sales!

They added new markets so a true comparison would have to be 2012 launch markets vs 2013 same markets. Exclude all the new countries and then you'll see what the real growth percentage is.

I think they had less supply per country because they added more launch countries... Obviously they made more than 9 million iPhones for the launch if they sold that many but typically China is excluded for the first few months.

And people are still wondering why the 5c exists...this is why.

They can now sell last years device as a new product, rather than just selling last years device for $100 less.

Believe it or not, their are people that don't want to spend the extra $100 on a device even with a $2000 two year contract.

Looks like the Apple is doomed, stale, stagnant, behind is postponed for another year. Maybe 2014 will finally be the year they are doomed guys.

9 million iPhones in 3 days? Steve would have never allowed this.

Good news for Apple but I'm not crazy about every change in IOS7. The colors are not easy to read for everybody, the 3D browsing was probably not a good idea, and both Safari and Compass have a compass on the icon. This last one must have been a distraction. I am sure it will be fixed eventually.

And the "budget" device sells 3 times less ?

By comparison, Samsung shipped 10 million Galaxy S4 phones in their first 28 days of availability. But of course, the iPhone is stale and just a rehash of last years model ya know....:cool:

Shipped means that at least half of them "went into the channel." That translates into sitting in a stock room at Best Buy, waiting for someone to buy them.

I'm not sure what it looks like in Europe or other parts of the world right now, because I haven't traveled overseas in a few years. But I can tell you that here in the US I still see about 7-8 iPhones for every Android phone. That ratio even gets more ridiculous in San Francisco.

That's a big number. I was thinking 8, tops. 7 would have met my reasonable expectations. 9 is just outright impressive.

I sort of wish I had kept a list of everyone who said Apple was artificially constraining supply, or that the 5c would never sell, so I could call them out now. One of those claims is surely wrong, and probably both. My guess is those people will be keeping quiet this morning, since the numbers are clear.
