i don't get how this is news, when 60% of iPhone users (probably 80%+ iPhone 4S and 50%+ iPhone 5 users) are just upgrading "in contract" i would say the bigger question is why is it ONLY nine million ?

(Personally im in the whole number cycle, on a 5, and skipping to the 6 with my contract upgrade next year)
A better question would be, why don't any other competitors have sales numbers like this on opening weekend?

This restores my faith in Apple. Regardless of what the haters say, i.e. they need to make a bigger screen to stay competitive, Apple has always been about making a profit, and making a profit they are!!:D

Well, just imagine if they had enough stock for those who waited in line only to be told "nope, we don't have any". 9 Million is only about 2.8% of the Entire US Subscribers. When we tack on the rest of the world of subscribers, I would hate to see what that number is. Selling 9 million phones is a lot, but not when you compare it to over 330 Million subscribers alone in the US. I wonder what the number is of people waiting to get phones there were ordered and are not shipping until October?
That was me lol

Here is who was surprised -- Wall St:

That size of jump in AAPL can only mean Wall St. thought, on Friday, with all the lines and sellouts, that the launch was a disaster. How stupid are they, exactly?

Very good point. They may only have sold 1m units with 8m now on backorder. Not quite the same although technically they've 'sold' 9m.

I think the point has been made here several times that they don't count it as a sale until the credit card has been charged, and that happens at shipping. Not sure if that's true, but if it is, wow.

Lets see.. My bet is the MacPro is going to have one hefty pricetag. I'd lay bets on $4K USD bare minimum.

Im thinking 3.5K. What I won't get but am hoping for is a 1 GPU model and a 2 GPU model...., and get that at 2K or 4K configs. But they said 2 GPUs standard. no way thats going to be 2K with those guys.

Of course, Apple also counts SHIPMENTS in their sales announcements. The seven million (see below) iPhone 5S sold include the millions sold and still being shipped to carriers and other retailers.

Nope. Apple only counts devices that have shipped on sales to end users for their launch numbers.

5c and some 5s versions were not constrained by supply.

5S shipping times have been listed as October for more than a day.

But my comment was about iPhone 5 shipments last year. They wouldn't have had 2 million more opening weekend sales simply by adding China as you have repeatedly implied.

What kind of sense does that make? How could something be constrained by demand without supply? You're not making sense.

I said it was constrained by supply. Apple sold all they could ship opening weekend last year. Adding China (more demand) would not have increased opening weekend sales.

Also, if you want to count both the iPhone 5S and 5C together, then you'll also want to count the Galaxy S4, S3, Note 3 and Note 2 together.

The more apt analogy would be including the existing iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S sales.

The iPhone 5c is a new phone, regardless of its components choice.

So, what you're saying is that 9 vs 5 million does not show an increase in demand, but in capacity.

New record for weekend sales? I wonder if this record would hold if we were able to pre-order the 5S. Surely that would bring opening weekend numbers down, no?

this has been asked of apple before and a sale is only counted when the device is confirmed as delivered and activated. think it was quoted in the past against samsungs figures being pulled from devices shipped.

Yep.

Of course, there could have been a corresponding increase in demand, but that's not what these numbers show in my opinion.

I wonder how many phones are actually in hand?

Given that the vast majority probably haven't shipped or even are in Country should they really be counted as sold or rather pre-ordered? Or if they are considered sold, shouldn't they say they were sold between launch and end of October when credit cards are charged and items ship?

Just playing Devils advocate, that is, this is just another twist on the sold v shipped arguments. Shouldn't they announce 9m of combined sales and commitments made? They are sold when they are paid for and shipped, surely?

The problem with shipped vs sold number is shipped number is always much higher than sold and people wonder if they can really sell every unit they shipped. Here would be a first time sold number might be higher than shipped if what you are saying is happening lol.

This shows you how wrong the WS analysts could be, on almost everything regarding Apple. The average prediction was 5 to 6 million for the first three days.
