So much for "Apple is Doomed" or "Its the same phone as last year"
Go Apple!
So much for "grotesquely low stock" of iPhone 5s.

A better question would be, why don't any other competitors have sales numbers like this on opening weekend?i don't get how this is news, when 60% of iPhone users (probably 80%+ iPhone 4S and 50%+ iPhone 5 users) are just upgrading "in contract" i would say the bigger question is why is it ONLY nine million ?
(Personally im in the whole number cycle, on a 5, and skipping to the 6 with my contract upgrade next year)

WHAT? Good god that's a lot of phones.
Now if only the new mac pro sells that much![]()
You honestly believe 50% of users upgrade out of contract?
That was me lolWell, just imagine if they had enough stock for those who waited in line only to be told "nope, we don't have any". 9 Million is only about 2.8% of the Entire US Subscribers. When we tack on the rest of the world of subscribers, I would hate to see what that number is. Selling 9 million phones is a lot, but not when you compare it to over 330 Million subscribers alone in the US. I wonder what the number is of people waiting to get phones there were ordered and are not shipping until October?
Very good point. They may only have sold 1m units with 8m now on backorder. Not quite the same although technically they've 'sold' 9m.
Lets see.. My bet is the MacPro is going to have one hefty pricetag. I'd lay bets on $4K USD bare minimum.
Of course, Apple also counts SHIPMENTS in their sales announcements. The seven million (see below) iPhone 5S sold include the millions sold and still being shipped to carriers and other retailers.
5c and some 5s versions were not constrained by supply.
What kind of sense does that make? How could something be constrained by demand without supply? You're not making sense.
Also, if you want to count both the iPhone 5S and 5C together, then you'll also want to count the Galaxy S4, S3, Note 3 and Note 2 together.
I said it was constrained by supply. Apple sold all they could ship opening weekend last year. Adding China (more demand) would not have increased opening weekend sales.
New record for weekend sales? I wonder if this record would hold if we were able to pre-order the 5S. Surely that would bring opening weekend numbers down, no?
So, what you're saying is that 9 vs 5 million does not show an increase in demand, but in capacity.
I wonder how many phones are actually in hand?
Given that the vast majority probably haven't shipped or even are in Country should they really be counted as sold or rather pre-ordered? Or if they are considered sold, shouldn't they say they were sold between launch and end of October when credit cards are charged and items ship?
Just playing Devils advocate, that is, this is just another twist on the sold v shipped arguments. Shouldn't they announce 9m of combined sales and commitments made? They are sold when they are paid for and shipped, surely?
Didn't they make it available to more countries than ever though?
I'm a kill-joy I know.
