Does this have to do with specifically a shortage of fingerprint sensor chips since it's such new tech?

Doesn't matter if you have say 10 million of the shells and screens ready if you can only have 5 million fingerprint chips to put in them.

hmmm... I eventually decided to skip out on this one... but now I might buy one anyway.. then get rid of it the next day to some desperate schmuck for twice the price :p

When I went to get my 5 at a local Verizon store launch week, the only one I could have walked out of the store with was a white 64 gig. I ordered my black 32 and waited a week. It was hard but it didn't kill me.

I had the opposite happen: at AT&T looking for a 4S during launch week, I tried to reserve a 32GB and they told me they could give me a 16GB white on the spot. I took it. I can't remember another time a salesperson tried to downsell me.

I really wish I had the other 16GB to play with, however.

Maybe their sales forecasts say that this will be a weaker release than previous, and they're just preparing for that.
Going as far as to make it "severly constrained"? I don't really think so, unless they think it'll bomb completely... Especially surprising since 5s is actually a pretty big step forward in terms of various features, compared to the 4 vs 4s. The iPhone 5 must have been a much trickier design at start.

I can't imagine the camera sensor making such a difference in assembly, so maybe I'm simply underestimating the added complexity from the fingerprint sensor, or maybe it's from the redesigned logic board. *shrug*

They should've just waited to launch it. I'm sure everyone would've understood.

Nope. That would've been the talk of every tech blog. I can see it now, all the negativity. The update so small, yet they can't produce them still in time for launch. I'm going to have to try for the silver 16GB Verizon first then follow up with the black (space gray) 32 (or 64 haven't decided) GB Verizon next on Apple's website.

Reminds me of the 90s-era incapacity to deliver the PowerBooks that people most wanted - so it is a double failure: OVER-DELIVER on crap (5C) and UNDER-DELIVER on the better model (5S)...terrible approach.

Just looking at your signature, it's clear you are a power user. But I'd stop far short of calling the 5C crap.

My younger siblings and both my parents are far from power users. The innards of the 5, and thus the 5C, are more than adequate for the casual user. It's also $100 cheaper on contract. So for them, it's a great buy.

To say the 5C is crap is going far too negative on it. Benchmarks and raw processing don't matter to most the world.

So the fact that I want a space grey 32 GB AT&T one should work in my favor then?

My thought exactly. In the same boat.

My wife is at a hospital right now, about to give birth to our first child.

I feel so bad that I can't be with her right now as I've joined the line at the Apple store Fifth Avenue. So stoked!

God I hope this is a joke. ...can I add /s please??

If it's not, pay someone to stay in your spot at least! It's not worth missing the birth of your first child man.

Someone reddit this **** and see if we can find the real guy to make sure he's just joking!!!

Wow. That's some pretty impressive prioritize room you've made there.

I swear that most of the posters on this forum surely must be plants by Samsung and Microsoft....

And I swear that just because someone makes an incorrect statement or doesn't think the 5S is incredible (not my opinion - just commenting) doesn't make them plants of the competition.

Wishful thinking, straw man statement or whatever. You could have easily gotten your point across without resorting to tin foil hat conspiracy.

And for the record - I agree with the first part of your post. The 5C is a pretty significant update to the 5. Whether or not those updates are valuable to any particular end user is for them to decide.

I hope it's a troll and that the large font for attention gives it away. :p

After driving all over town, unsuccessfully trying to find an iPad 2 during launch week, I vowed to never again get caught up in an Apple new-product-launch frenzy. I wait until a new product is widely available (and perhaps has some bugs worked out), and, once I have it, it doesn't bother me that I didn't have it for the previous two months or so. My life is much more serene now. :D

I bet they are having yield issues with the fingerprint sensor, hence the no pre-order too. They knew they won't be able to deliver the volume of ordered units in time.

Looks like Apple found a way to drive sales traffic to its stores...

yep....best way to create a huge buzz....leak reports that supplies will be limited. This creates a media buzz....more people scrambling to get one and the illusion of demand.

First they said these phones are DOA, no demand, no subsidy…etc. Now they said not enough phones. You just can’t win when you are apple.
