Camera improvements have been a staple of Apple's "S" phone releases. The iPhone 4S featured an 8-megapixel rear camera, a significant upgrade from the iPhone 4's 5-megapixels.
They should take note from the HTC One with their camera. It's less megapixels but a much larger sensor. The pictures, while smaller than an 8 or 12 megapixel shooter, look great and night shots/dark environments come out excellent without artifacts and visual disturbances. I'd gladly take a 6mp sensor that takes excellent pictures than a 12mp one that just takes huge ones.
Try again once you learn how to shoot.
Uhh, good thing the rumor is they are doing both?
I for one welcome an improvement in both areas. I think people need to remember that Apple has been on the leading edge, the BEST, of mainstream* phone cameras. It's everyone else who is just now catching up.
*Yes I know there are one or two phones with better cameras, but they were designed around the camera and have a giant bump etc., the iPhone is a mainstream phone that happens to have the best camera!
Purple Haze?

Isn't it a song by 'The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" or "Prince" or whateva!

what a waste of space guys.
do u think we have an option to shoot in a smaller size?
these files will be huge

you must be an inexperienced dslr user if you think you'll put away your gear for an iphone.

Night shots? Somewhere Paris Hilton is smiling.

Oh dear.
Purple Rain = Prince
Purple Haze = Jimi Hendrix
there all fixed up.
Why on earth is Apple sticking a 12-megapixel camera on a their phone .. ?
Why can't they just do what they always do to improve resolution ..... just add more lenses ? That's what Apple's been used to, and still is.
Night shot mode ? umm.. ok
Its already dark..... Use a flash..
But for many, it is becoming their preferred camera of choice. No joke. Some magazine covers are actually being shot with iPhones now. The Oscar winning doc this year was finished using an iphone. A famous war photographer shooting in Afghanistan has switched mainly using an iphone. The most popular camera on Flickr is the iphone.
More lenses does not equate to improved resolution. Every piece of glass reduces light transmission by some amount. You want the least amount of glass elements between subject and sensor.
I could equally say you must be an inexperienced photographer to not be aware that MANY professional photographers are indeed switching to the iphone as their main camera. I'm not saying an iphone is better. For some things, it clearly is not.

It may be easy to ridicule or dismiss the iphone, but I think that's snobbish. Don't be surprised to see more and more DSLR photogs switching to the iphone. Especially as Apple continues to improve its camera & software. Don't laugh. Remember, not too long ago, photographers like you were saying the same thing about how DSLRs would never be able to compete with traditional film SLRs. ;-)
Ummm, not sure what physics class you went to. The digital zoom thing is correct, but if the image sensor size is the same with more megapixels, you have a much smaller pixel pitch (IE physical size of the photosite), if the photosites are smaller, they are much more susceptible to gain (noise) which then has to be controlled in software which needs more CPU power.
Fix the shutter speed. Blurred pictures suck and are a common occurrence.
