There's a lot more that goes into shipping a product at this scale than just "having enough stock" you don't want to sit on millions and millions of assembled units and not get the return on the investment so you build up as much inventory as you can and then you release it and fill orders as necessary.

They could release to less countries and therefore have less demand for the new phones, but by purposefully releasing the phone to a larger audience and driving up the demand they can help fuel the "we must buy now or we're going to have to wait till November" crowd and on Monday or Tuesday of next week have a press release announcing yet again that Apple has sold a record number of units in their launch weekend.

Apple is the master at convincing people that the time to buy is now. :)

Exactly ... example: Surface RT :D

I could see them being like "Well we only had a few of the 5S, but we know you stood in line for 12 hours, so would you like this pink 5C today instead of leaving with nothing?"

Oh yes, I can see that happening very successfully tomorrow. It will take steely resolve (or an iPhone 5 in your pocket) to resist the charms of the 5c after five hours in line.

People who wait in line for a 5s are the type that want the latest and greatest. The 5c will sway very few of those people

I'll be the (optimistic) arrogant american here...
I bet there are more in store, online, etc here in the US than anywhere else. While I think it's going to be hard to get them, we will have it easier than most other places.

Wait, so let me get this straight -

There will be phones at the Apple stores in the US tomorrow morning correct?
Obviously limited amounts - but the people in line will get one until they run out.

yes...but they could run out very quick. Judging by the shipping dates.

Matt, it's not the best thing to broadcast to the world on the internet your petty personality that delights in other's suffering. I hope your username differs than your other online alias so prospective employers would not find out what a pathetic human being you are.

It does. ;)

It's very strange to me that they're opening up the online orders before store purchases. It means that the stores will get a flood of people that tried to order online but couldn't. I want mine Day One, but I think the lines are going to be insane.

But think how good it makes the numbers look, I bet many people will order online tonight with a delayed shipping date "just in case" , but will then manage to pick one up in store tomorrow. Sure, they'll then cancel their online order, but that doesn't stop Apple claiming 2 orders for that in their iPhone 5S launch figures.

Well so far it seems if you want Space Grey you probably won't have much trouble. If you want Silver or Gold, supplies are much more constrained.

As an aside personally I'd have loved to see some same day delivery. With orders in at pre 4 am surely they could have organised a string of afternoon deliveries.

Sales don't really start at 12:01...

Anyone remember what time the sales started for the previous iPhones? I'm gonna be in a tight time crunch and don't think I can wait for more than an extra 15 minutes or so after the "official" launch time of 12:01... I remember previous years' releases were always quite some time past the launch time...

I am hoping for the "Order online. Pick up at Apple Store" option like all other Apple products. Did this with my 5 and worked like a charm.

maybe SOMEDAY Applebots will FINALLLY realize the marketing ploy...you know....like Nike releasing sneakers every other week...dolts...thought you were educatefd....

UK Also 7 to 10 days

Hi Guys..

Well just ordered my 5S in the UK via the Apple Store App.. was done and dusted within the first min after midnight.. lol... UK also shows shipping as 7 to 10 business days... :(

TiM.

Sales just opened in the UK. Easy to purchase through the App, but all colours are showing 7-10 days for 16gb models. I haven't checked other capacities.

I purchased it a couple of minutes before they were due to go on sale, so I don't think there was ever any availability for immediate shipment.

Edit - The email says 7-10 working days for despatch, but has estimated delivery as 7th-10th October. By my reckoning that's about 12 working days, so it all looks quite estimated.
