I really hope the current home button gets redesigned. I hate pressing down so much to activate it. A touch sensitive button like S4 would be so much better.

So with a convex home button, wouldn't that mean that when laid face-down, the iPhone would wobble from the extruding home button? I don't see that happening. Apple likes their devices to be flush and fluid as possible. The only main exception to this is the new iPod touch, but the iPhone is Apple's main flagship product now.

Edit: Apparently I need to justify myself because Steve Jobs has spiritually told multiple people that I am putting my phone down wrong. I only have a screen protector and no case on my iPhone 5, so when I place it face-down, it makes it easier for me to pick up.

You couldn't scratch the face if you wanted to. Putting it face down just defeats the purpose of having a screen, but whatever floats your boat.

Lol. There is no way that the next iphone will have a fingerprint sensor. These things don't always work, even on a dedicated device. In a phone it will be frustrating scanning your fingers several times to get in your phone. Imagine when your hands are not absolutely clean, you would have to keep wiping them just to access your phone. This is a BS rumour.

Maybe, although it would be ironic if iOS7 is very flat, but the iPhone itself has a huge protrusion on the bottom. I personally would not want my iPhone to have what might be akin to a permanent erection.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're making that analogy.

Seriously. You seriously hate pressing down so much to activate it.

I actually have a 1000 gram Haldex force gage sitting on my desk.

200g force is what it takes to activate the home button: 7 oz., about 1/2 a pound.

Anybody else here have a problem pressing the Home button?

The home button is the hub of every device, going back to the scroll wheel on the iPod. I love new features, but to change the home button to convex, only for a fingerprint sensor used before you turn the device on, is a big risk that changes the user experience forever.

It's just a rumor, but it's a big change.

What are you talking about? this is nonsense.

----------

I can see how this could be helpful, but...

...What if you're walking along, using your iPhone 5S, and a thug comes up behind you, and knocks you out? Then, he simply places your thumb against the home button, and TADA, he has access to your phone.

he has access to your phone if he does that now.

I wonder. APPL will sell a lot of phones, but I think the 5S numbers will be lower than expected.

The 5S is only a modest upgrade. The 6 will have some very big sales numbers.

the 4S was only a minor update.

----------

Why the hell would I want a fingerprint sensor in my phone?

maybe read the thread instead of being lazy. There are more than a couple of reasons listed.

Yes. considering it only works 1/4 of the time.

Yes it's true not everyone wants a touch screen graphing calculator running something called cheese cake.

To the person gripping about apple not offering quad core septa core whatever, it's not needed on iOS. Apple claims to have the best phone not based on specs but user end experience. I had the gs3 for 6 months, htc one for a month and gs4 for a month. My conclusion is that no matter the processor speed all android phones are glitchy and have been from day 1. The majority of the apps are not made for their larger screens that change demenions every 6 months. What google play music does not have amazon music does, this is annoying since iTunes has it all. Now I don't mind the more technical aspects of android but I judge these devices as a normal consumer and not an Engadget comment nerd.

Obviously, you have never used before 4.7 inch screen. I've used the iPhone 5 and let me tell you, coming from a 4S it is awkward. 4.7 is the perfect size (5" is the max.) Seriously, if you can get your hands on the Nexus 4, just play around with it. I'm not saying you should thing about switching to Android, I'm just saying you should try a bigger screen.

As a user of the HTC One and an iPhone 5, I would have to disagree with you. Try deleting an app sitting near the bottom of that 4.7" screen with one hand... it's nearly impossible. IMO, the benefits of the extra .7" doesn't offset the liability.

That said, people have different needs and hand sizes, and I think it's a matter of when, not if, Apple releases a bigger iPhone. This is Samsung's worst nightmare because it's literally the only advantage (in some people's eyes) they have right now.

This is my thoughts on what will happen in September. Apple will introduce the 5C as the Ipod Touch with a cellular phone compability. The ipod touch is just a beautiful peace of art. It would only cost like $20 more to add the extra componets as one poster stated here. Price it at $299 and get the young crowd on the IOS system, their profit margins are lower although they would make it up from app sales. Would be a big hit for Christmas. I think all these leaked photos of the 5C are fakes. This would replace the iphone 4. Also, would be a hit in China.

My girlfriend had an Iphone 4 and I have an Android and just loved the IOS system, she recently sold it and bouught a Samsung Galaxy S3 and loves it. Although, I personally think it looks too big. I would never buy Samsung phones for I think they copied Apple in so many ways and don't like how they operate. When we were in the store we both commented that the Iphone 5 looked like a bannanna and just thought the 4 and 4S looked so much nicer plus the four was free. They should of made the 5 wider. Also, I used her Iphone 4 for a week and it was quite heavy, although it was so smooth, my Android often just shuts down, also I don't like Android for it seems to be just a free system that Google puts out to just advertise to you and track you.

I always liked Nokia phones and think they are just as nice as Apples, although I had such a bad experience with windows with constant updates and virus. I bought a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8 and returned it a week after, it was just so hard to get to learn and it slows business productivity down. That home button should of been there.

I think the 5C will replace the 4 and 4S and may come in two different sizes with both a 3.5" screen and 4" screen, keep it like the Ipod and grow IOS it will be a hit for the younger crowd.

Finally, I think the Ipone 6 will also be out in September with Sharps IGZO screen 4.8 inches which will increase battery life, Apple did invest I think 2 billion into Sharp and I believe Sharp already has the 4.8 screen which came out last September. It may have a curved glass and the Convex home button would be in the middle which makes since and be flush with the glass. I seen a picture on a UK site and the glass went to the edges, so overall you could have the same height as the Iphone 5 and just a bit wider.

The key to Apple is they need to get the Iphones into the younger generation and they will eventually move up to the Iphone 6 as they get older.

My next phone I buy will be the 5C for I just love the IOS system for the week I used it. The fingerpoint sensor I think will turn out to be like their map issues they had. I just think having my fingerprint stored in a database is a bad idea and some apps will access to it and who knows you could be framed for a crime. I want to get away from Android as fast as possible just think Google has too much personal information on people and uses it to sell to advertisers.

This is my first posting and best sight I found for Apple news, lots of smart people here and enjoy reading all the members postings. I think if Apple makes a budget phone they will open up China and younger people around the world. Nokia is also a company Apple has to watch out for, the Lumia phones are really nice, just that week I used IOS I fell in love with it. Can't wait to buy my next new phone.

One month to go... surprised we haven't seen any leaked shots of the front of the 5S.

I am hopeful that this means there are more changes that haven't been leaked yet. Still dreaming of a screen that is a bit wider not just taller...fit it into the iPhone5 body...but make the screen slightly larger.

But I know this probably won't happen.

What's wrong with your other hand?

"And next week I'll tell you my best friend's cousins goldfishes life story!"

But seriously... the iPod touch 5 is a beautiful Apple product... they aren't going to mess with that for at least another year.

We think that a fingerprint sensor will be placed under the home button of iPhone 5S. However, assembling it could be difficult as the space under home button is limited as it already has to accommodate the Lightning connector, speaker and microphone. Thus, we think the shape of the home button could be changed from concave to convex to create more space for a fingerprint sensor.

This makes no sense.

  1. There's no need for "extra space" inside the button with today's remote sensor layouts.
  2. Convex would distort the fingerprint.
  3. Convex is not as protective against accidental pushes.
Sapphire prevents home button from being scratched. A convex home button could be more easily scratched, so a harder material is required. We believe Apple will switch from plastic to sapphire, whose hardness is second only to diamond. Sapphire would protect the home button from being scratched and the fingerprint sensor from being damaged.

For over a decade, fingerprint sensors have used other protective materials such as silicon carbide... which is HARDER THAN SAPPHIRE and easier to apply.

Kuo goes on to note that Apple may have some advantages over its competitors as fingerprint sensors make their way into mobile devices, as Apple will utilize RF and capacitive technology from AuthenTec rather than the common optical recognition used in many other sensors, making for a more robust system unaffected by dust and other contaminants.

RF capacitive and DC capacitive sensors have been around since the late 1990s. They are not exclusive to Authentec.

I often wonder... what does Apple know about screen size that Samsung doesn't?

Or... what does Samsung know that Apple doesn't?

Both companies sell some of the best phones in the industry... so how can they be polar opposites on the topic of screen-size and one-handedness?

And it's not just Samsung... every manufacturer has had phones larger than 4" for a few years.

People place their phones screen down!?

I do, 100% of the time. I have what's called a screen protector and a case (Ballistic). The screen never touches the surface.
If something were to fall on your iPhone, would you rather it fall on your screen, or on the back side (or case side)? That is my logic.

A boy can dream...

https://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/22/iphone-5-details-3-7-inch-screen-home-button-with-gesture-area/

This is the type of product Apple needs to leap frog Samsung in the phone race. A 5S - while it will sell in the tens of millions - will not stop the drop in market share. I would love to see the 5C be the cheaper 4" screen but have the 6 be launched to shock the industry breaking with the "s" upgrade and come out with an edge to edge screen and all new design.

Just think of the lines that would show up on release day to get this phone...

Not sure where you're extrapolating that possibility from but it certainly seems like one of those APIs Apple would lock away from developers for both security reasons and button stress. Imagine your gateway to your phone being pushed and rubbed thousands of times a day for a game? It wouldn't last.
Did you miss the first part of my post on purpose? I said it won't be a physical button that you push. It's well known that the most commonly replaced part on the iPhone has been the home button because of how often it's pushed. If they can get rid of the need for a physical button they will. A fingerprint scanner is a possible way to do it. It'll simply be an optical scanner activated by your finger and sensitive enough to read the ridges on your fingerprint. If it's made of sapphire I'm curious how you imagine you could wear it down by rubbing it, even thousands of times a day. Are your fingers coated in diamond dust? Do you have a problem wearing down the much softer glass on your iPhone?

As for wearing out the optical sensor, when was the last time you had a mouse breakdown from using it too much? The lack of imagination on this board is stunning.

It will happen, there is no way Apple will release the 5C at a much cheaper price and have the 5S with the same screen size, the 5C replaces the 5S and the big surprise will be the 6 in September. These rumors of $100 cheaper for the 5C won't satisfy China Mobile, they need a much lower price point like $299 for a 3.5" screen and maybe $349 for a 4" screen, maybe no retina. The 5S with just internal upgrades and a finger sensor will send the stock price down. Some people are moving away from Apple to Samsung Galaxy due to the larger screen size. They need the larger screen on the 6 and makes no sense to have a 5C and 5S with the same screen size, retina or not. Most people will just by the 5C and it will eat into their gross margins. I bet on a 4.8 IGZO screen from Sharp given they already bailed Sharp out recently. Apple will never make a TV look at what happened with the Japanese Inc. Companies Sony sold off their business as well as Toshiba, they can't compete with the Koreans and Samsung. Apple invested in Sharp for the IGZO technology with a better screen and uses less battery power.

Who says the fingerprint sensor will be on the front of the handset? Think about how you hold your iPhone. There may be a portion on the rear of the handset with a fingerprint sensor on it. Just a thought.
