That's why they make chocolate ice cream. Don't like the 5S, u don't have to buy it. I'll reserve judgement for sept 10.

If Apple are to survive in 2014 we DO need to buy it.

I'm gobsmacked how the blinkered majority in this thread are kow towing to the zany idea that a new Home Button is the iPhones salvation.

So much so - I reckon its a spoof thread and everyone on here is in on it.

What?

No. Of course Im not paranoid. It's just all you lot that think I am!

Unless this allows me to do things that I'm not realizing, I'm not that excited. To me, this amounts to faster and more accurate authentication. While that is a nice to have, I would rather have a half inch larger scree and a super long battery life.

Stupid sheeps follow the butcher.
********ing idiots, excited abou the trash of total control.

I have been fingerprinted multiple times. What difference does it make for me now? answer 0.

----------

I do that many times, when I am on a table with others and I wanna be deiscreet with the incoming calls, messages, notifications. Just vibration and flashing.

how is the flash more discrete than the screen lighting up?

I've said this in another thread, but if the fingerprint sensor is in the touch screen itself, this would probably solve a lot of issues and rumours that have been going on for a while:

1. It would do away with a largely unreliable physical home button. In keeping with all previous models, it wouldn't activate unless the standby button was pressed - no need for convex/concave buttons.

2. It would enable NFC payments or similar via fingerprint/facial/retina scanning.

3. It could allow multiple (and maybe even joint) user accounts. Maybe the main user has to authenticate them for future use. So if I let my girlfriend use it, when she touches something, the bottom of the screen containing the Home button changes colour or something. If someone else tries to use it, an error message pops up.

4. The screen display could increase a bit to compete with larger displays, but while keeping the physical handset the same size. The bottom of the screen could disappear when playing videos, or could disappear with specific apps, e.g. Safari.

Surely this seems the best solution?

Ming-Chi Kuo gets a lot of column inches sating the same things every few weeks.

I can't see it being convex. And anyway, is this FP sensor really enough to make the 5s really special?

You realize Apple will sell 5 million iPhone 5S in the first 3 days, right?

That's more than some other well-known phones sell in 3 months.

And it's not just the launch weekend... Apple sells phones all year long. Highly profitable phones too. That's the key to Apple's survival... high profit despite their relatively low volume.

It's silly to put the words "Apple" and "survive" into the same sentence. If it's a question whether Apple can survive or not... what are your thoughts on companies like HTC or Blackberry?

Bottom line... Apple will sell more than enough iPhone 5S to survive...

I wonder. APPL will sell a lot of phones, but I think the 5S numbers will be lower than expected.

The 5S is only a modest upgrade. The 6 will have some very big sales numbers.

The data might be "fireproof" from hackers, but Apple still has the stuff on their end and can turn it over to the government if they request it.

Name...and fingerprint on that person's named device

I don't like this at all.

In other words, if Apple and government agencies work together behind the scenes, they could be compiling a billion fingerprints from people across the world to use for ID systems analysis and such. This worries me much. Even more is social profiling, etc.

I don't like it either. Many governments over the years have wanted to get peoples fingerprints complied. Law has stopped this (unless you've broke a law). This is an amazing way to get people to wander into handing over their prints in the name of having the next best/newest iphone. No laws broken.

I think Apple has some serious problems if after all this time their new flagship phone is a slightly bigger MP camera and a FP scanner. Not much to talk about really.

If companies like htc can survive, I have a hunch apple will be ok in 2014.

Please a bigger screen. I don't even care about having to redesign. The phones are already fragmented with 3 sizes what's 1 more?

How low is too low?

I mean... what's the number of iPhones Apple has to sell to break even?

Apple makes at least $300 profit for each flagship iPhone today.

5 million flagship iPhones sold in a weekend would be $1.5 Billion... profit. And if they don't sell that many during the launch weekend... don't forget they will sell them for the rest of the week... the month... and throughout the next year.

Anyway... the comment was posted that Apple could not survive if no one buys the iPhone 5S. That's ridiculous for the following reasons:

1. People will buy the iPhone 5S
2. It will generate an amazing amount of income for Apple

Honestly... Apple should make their slogan "The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated"

Wouldn't placing the scanner on the home button lead to a bunch of accidental button pushes. Seem like that would be annoying.

Ah! a fellow red raider! GUNS UP!! Ŧ

And yeah, I agree. i'm hoping the author made a mistake and meant "concave". But I have a feeling that article is BS anyways.

Lol, but, I'm still hoping that Apple will pull the rabbit out of the hat and introduce redesigned, bigger screen iPhone and scraping this "S" release nonsense. After all, there were no leaks of any kind before new redesigned Mac Pro announcement. If not, I know that like millions of others, I'll be looking for new bigger phone elsewhere...

That is not in production.

----------

I put my iPhone down, screen-down, quite often.

(I do use a case that has a lip that protrudes beyond the level of the screen, protecting it.)

There are a couple of scenarios where I do this:
• to stop push notifications on the lock screen distracting me when I'm at work.
• it discourages others from reading incoming messages, emails etc when I place my iPhone on a shared table (eg at a social event)
I know both can be deactivated from the lock screen, but their benefits at all other times outweigh the need to do this for these situations.

Also, placing your iPhone face down allows you to be polite when with company, not letting your phone take priority over a face-to-face conversation. You can discreetly turn it over to check it when appropriate.

or you could leave it in your pocket/car/purse/briefcase.

----------

Yes. Although I won't be leaving Apple WHEN the next iPhone is just 4". BUT, I won't be buying a 5S, so still a lost sale. I already have a 5S, as I have a 5. I expect a very low incremental change. They will focus on the 5C and iOS7, and hope to drag the 5S along.

CPU/GPU a little faster, camera a little better, NFC, Fingerprint sensor. None of this interests me as performance is smooth, camera is great, and no need to gimmicks

do I have a 4S because I have a 4? That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard especially considering the thing has not even been released.

Maybe instead of convex, they shall make it flat just as what Jony likes?

Maybe, although it would be ironic if iOS7 is very flat, but the iPhone itself has a huge protrusion on the bottom. I personally would not want my iPhone to have what might be akin to a permanent erection.

Apple better prey that it works as advertised or else it's Antennaegate all over again. I can just hear Steve Jobs say "you pressing it wrong" in the back of my head. "Fingergate" anyone?

I'm going ahead and going to call legitimate on this rumor.

I don't think it will be very prominent, but I bet that they found a convex home button more reliable for the fingerprint sensor than a concave home button.
