My theory is that Apple expects 5c to outsell 5s by far and thus not wanting to risk overloading their servers (well, mostly carrier's eligibility/upgrade servers) by offering both models for pre-order.

Anyway, it looks like 5s will be available for online order on the 20th. I just hope it will ship quickly enough as I refuse to wait in line to buy the phone.

oh boy, here we go again...

Slick. But not surprising. Apple is just trying to drive up demand for the 5S with the lack of pre-order option. Plus, wasn't it already mentioned that stock of iPhone 5S will initially be constrained to about 3-4 million units in the USA?

No thanks! Had my 4, 4S, and 5 on launch day without standing in line and I certainly won't be starting now. I have a job and a life. I can wait until whenever it shows up on my doorstep.

They just want the media attention of long lines to make the launch seem as successful as possible....

I was thinking this too, and then I remembered that usually the initial launch is US or almost US only before opening up to the rest of the world. In other words, Apple's initial stock has been held for US costumers giving us preferential treatment. This time they are launching in 9 countries! A quick jaunt over to wolfram alpha puts the approximate population of those other 8 countries at around 6 times the united states.

I think this just means the US may not be getting special treatment, which I'll miss, but I'm sure the international community appreciates having access on day one, even if it means shorter supply in the US.

Apple is thinking that they don't care. They'll sell them to people who have jobs a few weeks later :(

Also this. Anyone willing to pre-order is probably not a costumer they are concerned with losing because the customer has to wait 2 or 3 days

I am not surprised by this at all they have started to follow the trends of other companies do you have to pre order the latest samsung or htc or nokia nope

Do you guys think arriving around 10:00 PM on Thursday night to an Apple or AT&T store would be sufficient? I can't make it there any earlier.

Depends on your area. People already started lining up at the 5th Ave Apple store in NYC a few days ago.

Seriously disappointed with lack of pre-order. Why have they taken this decision?

In fact, this might actually stop me buying it.

Ridiculous!

So let me get this straight, your checklist of required features for a next phone purchase included:
"Receive phone same day as everyone else in the world, not 3 days later" ?
Wow dude

Hopefully we can order online and pick up in store.

Otherwise they can keep their phone...I'm not waiting in line for 12+ hours and being bombarded to buy a $2 phone case for $39 ect ect...And have every other person in line "What color you get bro?" "Pfftt just the 16 gig?" ect ect

My wife texted me today as she just bought the Iphone 5 in June and said..."Oh great thanks Apple you mean to tell me I paid $100 too much for my phone??"

Just a weird move by Apple I think...

Nobody's going to buy one now--the lines will last for months! Goodbye, Apple! :p

People do realize you don't actually have to wait in line, right? Even if you can't "pre" order an iPhone, you can still "order" an iPhone. They're shipping soon--it's not like we're talking a long time here.

If you're worried about getting to the "head of the line" among online orders, your challenge is just the same as a pre-order: when orders become available, it will be first-come first-served.

Or just wait a couple weeks and get one easily.

you mean to tell me you have a wife that made a 'bold' choice on June and you are a member here since 2010 and didn't tell her a new one was around the corner, come on...

I guess those people camping out already in Manhattan don't look as stupid as they did the other day.

Camping out for a phone is still crazy to me, I have no problem waiting until its available.

What are they thinking? No pre-orders is absurd. There are many of us who don't have the time to sit in a line for days.

Irony: People most likely to be able to sit in line for days are folks who don't have jobs and can't afford to buy an iPhone anyway.

If we order online on the 20th, what time and what time zone can we start ordering?
And will in-store pickup be available on the 19th at 10pm, or at least on the 20th at 12 AM PST (or hopefully EST in my case)?

Amateur move buying a end of cycle phone right before a refresh.

Three days? Have you never been through this before? In the past, if you don't pre-order and you're not camping outside of the store, you don't get a new iPhone for months... Apple shot themselves in the foot here. I can see them losing sales due to this.

I'm disappointed there won't be preorders for the 5s, but if you don't want to wait in line, why is it so bad to wait an extra couple of days for it to be shipped? It's hardly evil and anti-consumer if the only difference is you won't be the first guy on the block to have one.

But since there won't be preorders before then, perhaps there will be plenty of "online" stock if you order promptly on the 20th.

I think it's probably to due with yields needed. If they're launching in China from day one, and plan to be in 100 countries by the end of the year, it's probably just a case of they don't have enough stock to do pre-orders, and then have some available for networks and on the day walk-in sales.

There was already some stories about low volumes from production a few weeks ago, so this is probably because of that.

^THIS!
And if owning it on launch day is that important you have your priorities all wrong.

Chickensh!t ploy that Steve Jobs would never engage in. Not falling for it.
