I got involved for the sake of discussion. Just as I did with the other 50 iPhone 5 threads..... for sake of discussion.

oh poor you, how can you live with all those constant iphone 5 threads, it must be really hard for you, people all the time making iphone 5 threads, bastards! how could they do that to you??

let me help you with your problem, when you go to the forum, lets say iphone forum, you'll see all those threads (written in blue) and then you read them. if you find one that is of interest to you, click on it, if you dont, dont. is that so hard? or you just have very bad personality?

The current screen is 3.5". If they went to 4" they'd be looking at 1080x720, and at 4.5" they'd be looking at 1280x800. Not *huge* black bars, even worst case.

Thing is though, I *really* doubt apple would start making giant iPhones. Some people want a really huge screen, but most want a small, thin device. I'm pretty sure apple spent a massive amount of time and money to figure out the optimum phone size, and I bet they decided the iPhone size is it.

So where does that leave us? They keep roughly the same size for the iPhone. A small increase might happen, but a 4.5" screen is definitely out. Most likely: the device size stays almost the same, but the screen gets just a little bigger and the bezel gets a lot thinner. That gives you a sexier looking device, a bigger screen, no increase in device size, and they can keep the exact same resolution + UI.

i agree this is the most probable outcome, but a marginal increase in devices physical size with 4' and 1080x720 is also pretty possible. one thing we can all agree on is that 4.5' iphone isnt happening in near future and i thank god for that

they need to somehow bring the wow factor back to iphone. current iphone just looks outdated (not only by appearance) - im not speaking for myself but the average joe. i think apple has pretty awesome things in store for us in 2012 and i look forward to buying the iphone 6

I think theyll do their own thing regardless of competition, as long as it provides a sound user experience.

The 1080p GS3 is just a rumor at this point, and keep in mind the screen will be pentile, which effectively reduces its resolution (and ppi) by 1/3. The Nexus is also pentile, which takes its PPI count down to something like 220. For the uninitiated, Pentile uses a combination of pixels to simulate the number of pixels they say they are providing. The iphone actually gives you the number of pixels it claims (960x640=614400 actual pixels). Pentile sucks.

Wrong on ppi.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus has 316ppi with a 4.65" screen. Yes its pentile but you cant discern it at retina distance of 10-12". And if you say you can you're lying.
HTC rezound has 346ppi on 4.3" LCD screen. The screen is stunning. If you noticed on the release of the 4S apple didn't praise or mention their screen like it was the best. They couldn't. Not anymore.
The next iPhone will have to have a bigger screen with at least the quality of the rezound.

I said effective PPI. I said that because you have to reduce it to compensate for pentile. THe 346ppi number is simulated.

Also, 260PPI ipad called retina, cause you hold it 15" from face. Looks like I was right.

Please explain how the HTC Rezound 346ppi is simulated? Either it is or it isn't.
So is the iphone 326ppi simulated then? they are both LCD. Makes no sense.

Meant to say 316PPI, as in the Nexus, which is Pentile. Simulated because its using less pixels to give the appearance that all are there. Dont know about the Rezound, if it isnt pentile, yes true 346ppi. If it is, take out about 1/3 of the number.

Ok got it. I know the Nexus and pentile. But you wouldn't even be able to tell.

As for the Rezound it's LCD.
That's the beauty of Apple marketing.
They push their retina display and make consumers aware of it. Makes consumers think it's the best and make us want to buy.
Other companies, like HTC which as a better and larger screen than the iPhone 4S, don't even mention it.
They say stuff like 720p screen, but not one mention of 346ppi. And the screen is stunning.

Im sure it is. Keep in mind the retina display came out in June 2010. Rezound was what, 2 months ago?

I have a feeling this new iPhone will have to be larger in order to keep up with the advances of the Galaxy S III. I'm thinking 4.5 - 4.6" screen with 1920x1280 resolution and sell the iPhone 4 and 4S alongside.

I was just thinking about this. I can't see Apple keeping the current size, nor can I imagine them double up the resolution again. If so we'll probably be left with a 4 inch screen with a PPI below what most of the top tier - 720p - Androids are offering. Not really a massive difference ~ 50 ppi but it must be irritating for the marketing dept.

I have good eyes but I'm not really concerned with PPI. When I walk into Verizon or AT&T I have a hard time determining which screen is actually better just by looking at it even side by side.

And with extra processing power and battery life required to power these higher res/ppi screens I can pretty much do without.

I have a razr as a back up and I'm more impressed with the increase in screen real estate then quality and "supposedly" the razr's screen is pretty bad. My buddies S2 looks awesome.

Anyway the point of my mind numbing post was to simply say I'd prefer function over form especially if we are talking ppi that the average person can't see.
